The Great VS Sifting Challenge

(not to be confused with the Great VS Fisting Challenge - ask kulpims for details)

Today I pondered 2 things:

1) That we could use a fun activity, a contest of sorts, centering around some type of video-hunt,
and
2) whether a video could be sifted today that COULDN'T for the love of all that's holynoodly be placed into ANY of the current channels. No *comedy, no *wtf, no nothing.

So I figure if at this point there's anyone who hasn't yet grasped what this contest is all about, they're either Glenn Beck or have watched too much of him.

After such a video is sifted (links to old, existing ones don't count!), is linked to in the comments of this thread and is deemed as one fulfilling the criteria (no channel assignment possible) by me and at least one other sifter (apart from the submitter, of course), I will award AT LEAST 1 *quality and 2 *promotes to whoever is first, and their name will be engraved in the VideoSift Hall of Fame by none other by Siftbot itself (possibly - yet to be negotiated). Other folks wishing to congratulate the lucky winner may jump in with additional rewards, as well.

With that and wishing good luck to all, I hereby announce that the contest has begun!
Deadline: 10.00 GMT Monday morning - 7th September 2009.

We need a time and time zone for the deadline.

To be honest, I'm not going to follow it to the minute myself, but this is done. Monday, 10.00 GMT.

Yeah, I'm sorry, buddy, I did think of this one (since you sifted it some time ago), but like burdy said, it goes into *dark for sure, and it might even be appropriate to assign *art to it as well, as campiondelmondo and schmawy did to your post. And as if that wasn't enough...

So the race is still on. By the way, I will also be participating (that doesn't mean somebody else can't claim the prize if they find a proper video, though).

EDD says...

Also, to up the ante, the award is now AT LEAST 1 *quality and 2 *promotes (or 2 *qualities and 1 *promote).

*edit* ha ha, I'm such a n00b, the self-promote was unintentional

^very nice kulpims

Well, at first I thought we might have just had an early winner. But what about Spacy ("Clouds and beyond"), Wtf and Wildwestshow though? Geek and Happy might also apply, no? I'm not saying I'm definitely 'disqualifying' it though, at least not yet, I need input from somebody else.

EDD says...

I think we have a winner - amazing find, BTE As soon as someone else confirms that this doesn't fit into any of the channels, I'm officially declaring you the victor. Personally, I just sat through the whole 10:04 and went over the whole Channels' list again - and I have to say that I can't nit pick on anything here. Great sift to link to in response to a comment/bad sift, too!

blankfist says...

We don't have a boring tag yet, so... And the only channel I'd consider it to fit into would be *nature, but only because he's outside. If it fits into the nature channel, then every other video with people outside would fit as well.

It's not funny so it doesn't go in comedy.
He's not doing anything unusual, just shopping at a Walgreen's pharmacy so it's not wtf.
It doesn't make you happy.
It's not dark.
There are no kids or cats and dogs or anything cute.
It's not geeky and no engineering is happening.
There's no music.
He's not in Asia or Britain or Canada or Down Under and there's no animation.
It's not packed with action.
It's not about the brain.
No comics, commercials, cooking, nor cult.
He tells the truth so it can't go in lies...

So yeah. Without a *fatguys or *beards channel, I think this could be a wiener.

I submit that any video with pretences of being about nothing at all can at least be classified as art.

He's right, you know. If this and this can both be called art, than anything can. I voted for them both based on their bizarreness and absurdity, not for their "artistic" merits. Andy Warhol also made a film called Sleep, which was nothing more than a 5 hour film of his friend John Giorno sleeping. Art.

So really, anything that doesn't fit into a channel could be labeled "Art," and how could you prove him or her wrong for doing so?

Having said that, here's my submission:

Capital A
Capital R
Capital T

It has to be art, because it's in French. And it's from Vimeo.

He's looking for drugs.
It's terrible.
He said he wouldn't stop the camera, and there were two obvious edit points, so lies.

I think inflatablevagina is in the lead with the vid of the guy flexing. Maybe it's actionpack (Ball-flexin'), maybe it's 1sttube (there's a title graphic), and if brief counts, then it's definitely that.

The spit video is femme, teens, and possibly sexuality, terrible, eia, etc.

The guy filming himself mowing the lawn is terrible, and if you look it up, it's british and comedy/philosophy as well.

I'm trying to imagine a video that shouldn't be in any channel, and not coming up with anything I couldn't apply a channel to.

Seems that there should be some way to exploit our lack of *health channel, but most videos on that also qualify for animation, howto, money, politics, science, geek etc.

What really makes this challenge so difficult is everyone's willingness to completely misapply channel assignments.

I'm constantly amazed at how many people, sift veterans even, don't know what the cult channel is for, among others.

gwiz665 says...

Looking over what's actually in the channel, it's as much about videos with kids, instead of for kids. I'm using it as if it's "with kids", though I'm not sure I've ever had a video in there.

EDD says...

I did announce a winner, even though most people seemed to miss it - it was BTE with the http://www.videosift.com/video/Watching-Paint-Dry. Remember that I said in the very beginning that this was a race against time - whoever does it first, gets the reward. Anyway, he's now been awarded the promised promotes and qualities. But I think I'll award some people with extra promotes/qualities all the same, because I amassed some power points during my absence (which was unintentional btw - sorry for that all the same).
