He also apologized...er...tried to. All in all, I forgiveth. It's funny that somebody can flip sifters on their heads and make them lose control.

I may not agree with him all the time, but I sure as hell acknowledge his right to speak his mind and welcome him to do so at any time.

alien_concept says...

Slight contradiction there really. Yes for certain captainplank420 has every right to speak his mind freely (and good for him) but based on that so does berticus in starting this thread so... if you don't like it, ignore it?

who made you chairman of the central comitee, rottenseed? I didn't know you and your ass licking pal CaptainPlanet420 carry an exclusive license to use sarcasm around here

It's not the sarcasm that bugs me. I feel if you have a beef, you deal with that person individually. Grudges are unnecessary and I can't stand to see them perpetuated or fueled. There is no use for this on sift talk. I could discard it but I thought I'd give berticus the ability to do it on his own.

I am just playing by the rules:
Harassment or personal attacks in any form (comment, ST post, blog, submitted video, etc.) are forbidden

I agree that this shouldn't be here -- not because I necessarily agree with rottenseed, but because you're breaking the number one rule of dealing with internet douchebags: don't feed the trolls. The thing about trolls is that they feed on other people's misery. Stuff like this just makes them stronger. On the other hand if you ignore them they'll eventually wither away and die (ie. they'll move to another community where their stupid crap can successfully get a rise out of people).

On the one hand I applaud this *quality post. But OTOH this is a verbotten "call-out" posting and just one of these is enough to start the onslaught of BOOOO-HOOOO so-and-so said this. So-and-so downvoted me.

Look, let's all calm down and concern yourself over what YOU are doing, not hunting down all the asshats (*wink* for you KP)

I'm really tempted to *discard this and see what happens

alien_concept says...

Giving berticus a chance to discard this post, pfft. No offence rottenseed, because you're certainly not being irrational or out of order, but I say too bloody right that someone who is primarily offensive on this site should be called out. Why the hell not, if he can't take the heat he should get out the kitchen, no? And if we all played by the rules of no personal attacks, then we would have no threads left! Surely differences of opinion and discussions thereof are what make us all tick. And as for the don't feed the trolls thing. Again, if we all agreed and just let the shitty commenting slide, and everything was all fluffy bunnies we'd be bored shitless.

HaricotVert says...

Agreed.

Comment voting ensures that trolls are fed no matter what... as long as people keep clicking downvote (or upvote in the rare instances in which they produce a wortwhile comment), they know their comment has been read and has gotten a rise out of the reader one way or another.

To get rid of trolls - as you said - you have to hit the "ignore" button... downvoting is just a backwards form of encouragement. Thus, reproducing all of CaptainPlanet's recent low-voted comments here is probably having the opposite intended effect.

Thanks, I understand the troll feeding caveat. I felt it was worth saying something anyway.

The purpose of this post is to draw the community's attention to the fact that schmawy, for breaking the rules, gets a 2 week ban... yet what punishment has CaptainPlanet420 ever got? What do I get for this post? I'll gladly take a ban for "hate mongering" (sweet jesus, if that isn't an exaggeration...) if something can be done about CaptainPlanet420's incessant vitriol.

Hitting ignore changes absolutely nothing, it merely hides you from the truth. "Ignorance may be bliss, but it's a bliss someone else always pays for." Oh, but who cares? What's the big deal. Let's just allow people who continually express willful antagonism to multiply and go unpunished.

Go ahead and discard it, then. Just proves to me how little you care.

You're honestly devoting an entire thread to a guy with a 420 after his name and an avatar of Steven Seagal in a chef's hat?

Well, on the plus side, I guess it isn't a political thread bashing Miss Palin...

HaricotVert says...

Okay, I'll bite.

1. I don't know what "truth" you or I are hiding from by ignoring CaptainPlanet420 - this implies that his posts contain truth to begin with.

2. I don't know what punishment CaptainPlanet420 would be deserving of aside from generic scorn, which he already has in abundance. Posting inflammatory comments is not an offense, unless they contain blatant racism.

3. There exist numerous sifters who engage in similar practices - QM and BillO come to mind. What is their crime, then, aside from posting typical conservative/republican views? Sure, some of them may be baseless lies, but we can't punish people for posting nonfactual content.

4. Who exactly has CaptainPlanet420 converted to his cause that didn't already agree with him, if you believe his willful antagonism is allowed to multiply and go unpunished?

Okay, I'll reel.

1. The truth you are hiding from has nothing to do with veridicality. By ignoring him you are simply not prone to his remarks, and thus the full picture - that is what I mean by truth. I refuse to be blind to them because they affect others that I care about too. To ignore them only lessens the likelihood that eventually something will be done about it. If VideoSift commenting and other people's feelings are a joke to the guy, then take away his toys until he learns a lesson.

2. Have you read the FAQ? "If these types of comments are regular occurrences, we will probably ask you to leave the community." They're practically his ONLY comment contribution.

3. Unpopular political views are no crime. This isn't about that. If QM and BillO are consistently leaving abusive comments then they deserve the same fate. I have only highlighted this case due to recent events.

4. No one. What I was trying to convey was that there is no accountability for these people, so there's nothing to stop more of them coming along and taking a shit in our picnic basket.

SUMMARY: WHY is nothing done when people are continually abusive? It's right there in the FAQ.

You know what's fucked up about ignore? It doesn't work.

For the person that's ignoring - you still see the ignored members sifts, still see their stupid fucking avatar (unless you adblock it) they still upvote/downvote your comments and sifts (and you see that), they can still reply on your profile ... for all intents and purposes they're still in your face and you might as well ignore them without clicking ignore.

For the person being ignored, it's never a deterrent. I'd like to think that just ignoring some people would make them go away, but I'm confronted by the reality that ... there's a LOT of assholes in the world. It takes very little food for a troll to survive in the wild like this. Just another idiot and a sock account and you could live for years. There will never be a time when the entire community ignores someone.

Christ I see this again and again. What is the difference between racism and homophobia? It's still offensive, hurtful and out of line. Ignorant comment

My comment was not meant to exclude the other various bigoted things people can say to any number of ethnic groups, sexual orientations, genders, or ages. It was to provide an example of a comment that would be in blatant violation of Sift Guidelines. If I come on the sift and start making posts consisting only of "KILL FUCKING WHITEY" and "HONKIES GO BACK TO OKLAHOMA," then yes I am in violation of sift guidelines and would summarily be permabanned. I am no apologist for CaptainPlanet's views, but until he starts saying homosexuals should be left to die in open fields, he is not in violation of posting guidelines.

Do I find his views distasteful? Yes. Do I think he is misinformed about many topics? Yes. Do I think he is rude and tactless with his responses? Yes. Do I think he should be silenced because I disagree with him? No. Most importantly, Has he broken any of the posting guidelines?

If so, please show me where. The 5 links you provided in the first post do not indicate any violation of posting guidelines - they merely illustrate that he is unpopular and produces poor comments.

berticus says...

You're not even worth bothering with deedub, sorry sugar.

@HaricotVert: The third abuse guideline states that harrasment in any form is forbidden. In the first comment I linked to he calls gays illegitimate losers. He might not have broken the guidelines for YOU, but he sure as fuck has for me, multiple times.

HaricotVert says...

As wrongheaded, baseless, and false his statement in post #1 is, that is not harassment just because you happen to be offended by his comment. I am offended by it as well. Was he harassing me? No, because that is not harassment. Harassment is: "Hey guys, HaricotVert is a fucking faggot!"

He did not say that, though. He made an incorrect and statistically impossible statement about the existence of gays. That's his own problem, and it's not unlike things I hear on street corners, in Letters to the Editor of my local newspaper, on various internet forums outside of VideoSift, or any number of churches in my county. Are all of these people being arrested/banned just because you interpret it as "Harassment"? No, they're not.

For the last time - if you really have a problem with him, ignore him. You're saying you don't get the "full picture" by ignoring him... I honestly do not know what you mean by that if you so fervently believe his comments are completely worthless - they simply contribute nothing to the "full picture" to begin with. If you just want to be aware that comments like those are being made so you can be in tune with the "reality" of hate-speech, I am not sure why you campaign so strongly for disciplining CaptainPlanet420 despite there being many thousands (millions?) of people just like him all over the intarwebs. What are you doing about those individuals? Are you taking on each one individually and appealing to admins to ban them, too? I do not understand how punishing just one CaptPlanet will "shield" you from the thousands of other CaptPlanets in both the real and virtual world who spout the same stuff.

The high road would have been to just ignore him. You and I are both of strong enough will to simply write him off as one of the morons of the world and carry on. However, now you've simply brought yourself down to his level in engaging him on his own bullshit. Now I'm in here arguing against you only because you fell for the trap. The discussion is now unrelated to the original banning of schwamy. Now it's about whether or not people should have to listen to CaptainPlanet. If you don't want to ignore him, fine. Plenty of people already have, and the friends you want to protect from his abuse can ignore him too. However, for me it's one thing to hear what CaptPlanet says, and another to listen.

I'm done here, the solutions have been presented to you and you seem to not want to accept them.

Well, HaricotVert, I disagree with every single thing you just said, but I'm still glad you said them. Let's see what happens when I play devil's advocate.

Oh and deedub, fluffybuns, don't get all in a tizzy, my little poofycakes. ♥ Kissy kissy ♥
