A Painkiller retrospective.
Thylansays...

Now that i want to play. And i was amused to the DS reference, as my ancient and slow PC loads Soulstorm so slow its what i play during thoes, which i find ironic.

spoco2says...

Aemaeth I'm with you on this one, to a large degree anyway.

Painkiller was a game where I played the demo when it first came out and thought it to be the best darn thing since they learnt how to make bread thinner than a loaf. I waited until it was a $9 bargain bin title (also gave me ample ability to upgrade my then pathetic machine to play it properly) and then began playing it with much gusto.

It does indeed have insanely different levels with no real link between them, and that keeps things interesting, but yeah, eventually... I can't remember how many levels in... I became a mite bored, and I have yet to actually finish it, probably never will.

Doesn't help that the cinematics are SO DARN BAD.

And for those that didn't know, the Gears Of War PC port was done by People can Fly... so there you go.

But yeah, something insanely satisfying about sticking an enemy to the wall with a wooden post, or freezing then shattering their body into a million pieces.

The Mental Asylum!!

I laughed at this! he's right it fires shurikens and lightning!
ahah

I hear you Spoco2 but it must be said, drink a bottle of jolt and then go mental with the painkiller, hours of fun. Of course Jack Thompson would say I am now I fully trained Phycho Assassin but..meh. its stupid and fun! And it knows it!

I say yey!

Meh. Painkiller was just meh. It was everything yatzhee said, but kinda repetitious by the end.

The "waiting 8 months" reference at the end makes me think he prepped this one a while ago maybe? Dunno. Regardless, amusing even when repetitious.

gwiz665says...

Zonbie, are you saying you're not a psycho assassin? Then what have I been paying you for!?

Painkiller is the dogs bollocks and is easily the best "dumb" fps out there in a while.

videosiftbannedmesays...

Is it me or is he beginning to talk even faster than he used to? Jesus, I was wondering if I wasn't listening to John Moschitta, Jr. hawk Micro-Machines there for a minute.
(Yeeeaahh...that's an old school reference right there. Where's my upvote love?)

jmzerosays...

I played Painkiller right after Serious Sam. It seemed pretty weak in that context, because Serious Sam is ridiculous - but maybe I should give it another go.

HadouKen24says...

Ah, Painkiller. I really enjoyed that game.

Not as much as Serious Sam, though. Painkiller isn't quite as good. The enemies aren't as entertaining, and the level design is a wee bit more repetitive.

Which doesn't mean that I won't play Painkiller. I did. And enjoyed nearly every minute of it.

Asmordeansays...

Painkiller is one my favourite FPS games I've played. It lets you run & gun or creep about and snipe.

I think I died about 20 times in Hell because I simply had to run about and look at everything. It was the best endgame level design I've ever come across. Sadly the fight with Satan is a gimmickfest but it remains the only FPS I've played through three times. Most others I play once and I'm satisfied.
