Why The War on Drugs Is a Huge Failure

YT: The war against drugs has been a terrible disaster for everybody involved. Why? And can we do something differently?

It would be nice if someone in government actually pulled their head out of their arse and watched this.

We didn't learn during Prohibition that you can't force people to stop trying to seek escape or pleasure through substance abuse.

Now there are so many agencies and officials getting money from the 'war' that they will fight tooth and nail to keep the status quo.

Can we also just stop with the fucking bullshit moralising?

Getting drunk is fun. Getting stoned is fun. I haven't done much else, but I'm pretty sure people do them because they enjoy them.

Is it a problem for some people? Unquestionably.

But if you look a little deeper, it's almost never the drugs or the alcohol, it's the debt, or the pressure or the broken family life or anyone of a million things that can fuck up your life. The substance abuse is just a symptom of that. And if you take that away, people will find other ways to be self-destructive.

I live in Washington state. We legalized pot here. People who were going to smoke pot anyway instead of taking from the tax base now contribute to it. Instead of a bunch of scuzzy street dealers, we have clean, well-regulated marijuana shops. Crime has gone down. Cops now can focus on more serious crime.

We legalized and the sky didn't fall. It's a lesson for the rest of the US.

Did anyone else notice the tardis at the end there? cute.

Good stuff tho, It feels like the reason we keep using prohibition as a tool is because were afraid that if something is legal, then everyone will do it and society will fall apart (One of the anti-gay implicit argument)

Is the War on Drugs an extension of the philosophy of "Supply-Side Economics?"

Deciding if the War on Drugs is a failure depends on how you measure success.

If the intention of the War on Drugs was to increase incarceration rates, strengthen gangs, destabilize society (especially the among the poor) increase fear, and waste tax-payer money, then it has been very successful indeed.

Under the War on Drugs, a large amount of wealth has been concentrated among a few individuals at the top of large gangs and cartels, while the drugs themselves have trickled down to be consumed by masses, and the "war-laws" used to jail the poor.

Under the same period after Supply-Side Reaganomics, we've seen concentration of power not only among organized crime/drug-cartels, but also among other industries as well, including media, banking, telecommunications, and many others.

Basically, the War on Drugs has been won!

...by the drugs.
