Thwarting An Attempted Darwin Award Winner

YT-How this can happen i do not know but i hope this video will raise awareness to how important it is to pay attention to detail when base jumping. So many new jumpers come into this sport thinking it is all about go pro's and social media and they forget the fundamentals of how serious and dangerous this sport can be if respect is not given to every aspect of it. I am glad i saved some ones life. but each jumper must have the ability to save their own on each and every jump.

It's more natural to hold a phone in portrait (vertical) than in landscape (horizontal). Typically landscape requires 2 hands -- and if filming landscape with one hand, it becomes easy to lose grip.

I know it ruins the cinematic quality, but he didn't film the dude for our entertainment, he filmed it as proof.

It's also a logistical issue, as it is easier to grip a phone vertically than horizontally. This is the reason why there are so many videos filmed in this mode. Especially in situations where people are unable to use both of their hands to stabilize the video, such as running, when in danger, or at the top of a bridge...

Also, his subject is a human which stands upright, so filming vertical allows him to distribute his subject matter across the entire canvas; whereas landscape would cut off the primary focus and distribute the background on either side of the subject, which is unimportant to the situation, in place of filming the man from head to toe in a single frame.

Does anyone else get the slight impression he really likes talking about how he saved someone's life? Not his major motivation by any means, but maybe a little?

"I'm glad i saved someone's life!" -- I think we assumed that mate, or were you just reminding us?

He would have fallen right out the bottom of his harness to his death. There was nothing holding him in but the 'vest' part, no anti-submarine strap, no leg straps, nothing.

Can somebody explain what would have happened??

Like above, imagine wearing a few hundred pound backpack while you're upside down. You couldn't hold it. Same thing, just the other way around. As soon as the chute deployed it would slip right off him.

He'd hit the ground like a Hefty bag full of vegetable soup.

I still can't quite figure out whether this guy is a hero or a villain. I mean, he saved the twit's life, but by doing so, he undoubtedly helped us on our way to Idiocracy. I'm kind of thinking he should have let Darwin have him.

And on the other end of the spectrum we've got Sir Nicholas Winton who saved nearly 700 peoples lives and didn't tell anyone....

A little, but I also understand it. It would have been a great moment of stress when he realized what was about to happen, and if his brain is anything like mine, would have been replaying it over and over again and you have to do something with that pent up energy.

I tend to blabber on about what happened. I think he is similar.
