eric3579says...A bit more on the topic
siftbotsays...Promoting this video and sending it back into the queue for one more try; last queued Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 7:16pm PDT - promote requested by eric3579.

@ChaosEngine No more cake for you fatty!
eric3579jokingly says...Sorry dude, just callin' it like i see it.

articianjokingly says...She read more than 60 studies on this!
EDIT: Also, "spinning" = stationary bikes. I got learned!
Khufusays...This video and the one linked above both ignore HIIT training which has been tested and proven to burn significantly more fat than traditional steady cardio. You need to look no further than the fact that some lean olympic level athletes eat 14000+ calories a day and stay lean... it's because of how they train.
Nephelimdreamsays...Genetics and intake? Who the fuck knew.
TheFreaksays...The only thing I know for certain is that the entire science of metabolism is much more complicated than a 5 minute video that's pushing a political agenda.
The truth is that all the research has proven nothing yet about the push/pull of calories, exercise and metabolism. Dumbing down the science and presenting half the facts with a biased, attention grabbing headline does nothing to illuminate the subject.
dannym3141says...At 1:43 the conclusion made from the graph is "5lbs at most" when the graph shows a different story. Those blue shadows on either side of the line show some kind of uncertainty whether it be best case and worst case scenarios or margin for errors.
I know that sounds like nitpicking, but it'd be like someone saying they love cars and know all about them, but when you ask what their favourite type of car is they say "red ones". It presents itself as scientific but then makes a high school level scientific mistake that just scratches at the surface of credibility.
[calories in] - [calories out] = [net calories absorbed or lost]
Calories are directly proportional to mass or weight. If you burn more than you ingest then you lose weight, it is unavoidable. The "best" way to lose weight is to be negative in the above sum, either by increasing your energy expenditure (exercise) or decreasing your energy intake (food). And of course the body needs essential vitamins and whatnot to function and remain healthy.
I have a friend who took tablets to increase his resting metabolism. He lost weight, but also sweated profusely, had a high heart rate that worried him and regained the weight straight after coming off them.
ChaosEnginesays...What "political agenda " are they pushing? Eat less?
And it's a YouTube video... of course the science is simplified.
The fact is that people DO think that exercise allows them to eat what they like (especially sugar) when it doesn't.
HIIT helps, but diet is still important.

Mordhausjokingly says...Cake or Death?
TheFreaksays...I don't recall anyone claiming the path to losing weight is exercise alone. This video is based on a straw man argument.
It's just as irresponsible to claim that exercise plays no significant part in weight loss. There just aren't definitive results yet from studies of how exercise affects metabolism. So we can't draw conclusions.
So what's the purpose of this video? There's a message at the end that we need to push politicians on food policy. So does this video provide biased interpretation for a political agenda? Maybe I was wrong on that count. But then, what IS the point of this video? They can't be trying to convince people to lose weight from diet alone. There is no reasonable study that makes that conclusion.
Maybe it's a clickbait video. What it is not, is a reasonable analysis of the available data. Because any reasonable analysis says, "we don't know yet, so diet AND exercise."
But I agree about HIIT. It is personally the only way I can stay at a healthy weight. Along with careful nutrition.

ChaosEnginesays...There are millions of people all over the world who do this very thing all the time. It's a myth perpetuated by TV shows like "the biggest loser".
What's the purpose of the video? Generating ad revenue for Vox. They're a business after all. But secondary to that, I think the purpose of the video is simply to educate people about the importance of nutrition in weight loss. You would be amazed at the number of people who don't understand it.
I don't think you could really call it clickbait (other than the fact that everything is clickbait, so the term becomes meaningless). In fact, it's almost the opposite of clickbait... the main point is given away in the title. It's not like it was called "you won't believe this one amazing weight loss method" or some shit.
I don't recall anyone claiming the path to losing weight is exercise alone. This video is based on a straw man argument.
antjokingly says..."The cake is a lie."
@ChaosEngine No more cake for you!
Paybacksays...Nope. Cake is never a lie. It's the one complete and perfect truth in the universe. All other facts are mere observation. Cake is all.

transmorphersays...I'm glad to see that people are now accepting that exercise does very little for weight loss. Eating the right foods is 90% of the weight loss effort. Permanent weight loss also hasn't got anything to do with calorie counting/restriction.
A whole-foods plant based diet is the only sustainable way to lose weight because you never go hungry, and you get all of the nutrients you need. No exercise, no starvation, no calorie counting, no fasting, no salads. Just eat real hearty and satiating foods, and that's it.
You'll lose an average of 2.5kg a month, which within 2 years is 60kg. It's consistent, predictable and permanent.
If you're serious about losing weight here are some resources that I've used to get my BMI back to 23 (from 30):

Of course, exercise is great for your heart and brain health, and to give your body some tone and shape.
transmorphersays...If governments are serious about the obesity epidemic, they need to encourage people to eat real whole foods by any means necessary. It would certainly help stop the spiraling health care costs that many governments(and insurance companies!) pay for.
I'm not sure whether this strategy would work, but since poorer people are now more obese than richer people, it tells me that the price of certain foods has a lot to do with what people consume. So my solution would be to subsidise healthy foods such as brown rice, whole meal bread / pasta, potatoes, corn breads, legumes/beans, and of course vegetables and fruit so much, that they cost almost nothing, while at the same time taxing foods that are clearly associated with obesity and illness. That way people still have a choice to eat unhealthy foods, but they are paying for their healthcare costs upfront, while having easy access to healthful foods.
transmorphersays...HIITS is fantastic. 10 minutes of proper HIITS is as good for your cardiovascular system as 1hr regular cardio. It makes sense too - think about what humans would have done in the past. Short intense periods of hunting, or running from predators, fighting other humans etc intertwined with cooling off exercises like walking and picking things off trees.
But either way it's not possible to out exercise a bad diet.
Athletes are lean because they eat mostly carbs. Which, despite the fitness industry's best efforts to demonize, do not make people fat.(So they can sell protein powder, AKA dairy waste product).

transmorphersays...Eat all of the cake you want, provided it's got little fat in it, it's made from wholemeal flour or oats, and most of the sweetness is from fruits/veges

Even though the carrots and raisins will do a lot to suppress the insulin response from the added sugar, I'd still look at putting in less and less each time as it helps bring out the other flavours, and of course refined sugar has no nutritional value.
And I nearly forgot: BANANA NICECREAM! The more you eat the better.
