The Pachelbel Rant - Never look at the Canon in D the same

sbchapmsays...

As I cellist, I can back him up. I think the score gives us two measures of the notes, and then has a repeat sign for, like, the rest of the thing. I'd get so bored that I'd make up my own harmonies which, come to think of it, was my first experience in playing by ear. So thanks Pachelbel for boring me.

I played cello in 4th and 5th grades (got to middle school and the horrible teacher turned me off of playing music for the rest of my life) and I remember always liking Pachelbell's Canon quite a bit. That it was repetitive didn't really bother me because pretty much all beginning cello parts are obscenely repetitive.

Pallen, I would say something about the universality of appeal of this video, something about the Canon in D holding a special place in our society despite its age and classical nature, something about the relevance of such a classic, traditional piece in our modern day and age filled with formulaic, factory-line-assembled pop bands, something about laughter and music being universal languages and their ability to reach out to many people from many cultures and backgrounds...

but then I decided the video and votes could speak for themselves.

There is no way Jake is going down. He's like the Dark Sith of the Sift. This just has only 1/4 the votes he possess, he pisses down on Pachelbel (and my Segovia sift) from astronomical heights currently...

rembarsays...

Haha, I was referring to Jake in my above post, not Pachelbel. Thus the "that", as opposed to "this".

For those of you who were confused, UPVOTE THIS SIFT!!! PACHELBEL APPROVES THIS MESSAGE!!!*

*Pachelbel (as well as his immediate family and estate) in no way approves or in any way endorses this message.

rembar, I wasn't saying that this was a -bad- video. In fact, I'll even say it's a good video. But it's not hands-down the best video I've ever seen on Videosift ever, which is what that overwhelming number of votes suggest it should be.

I guess I missed the novelty of all the points on which other people were impressed. Namely, that Canon in D is a recognizable song, that band geeks have all their own inside jokes that no one else finds funny, and that pop music is incredibly unoriginal and repetitive and thus an especially easy target of criticism.

That said, I guess I'll go ahead and join the bandwagon and upvote this. As I said, it's a decent video.

Hey Pallen, no biggee. I was just joshing ya about the votes, VS suffers somewhat from the same effect pop music does - the more popular a particular sift is, the more popular it will become.

In any case, don't worry about what I think. Your vote is your own to cast or not.

It was a joke, WolfDemon. There's a habit among Youtubers to yell "fake!" whenever they see a video that shows something they don't believe could happen. It's terribly annoying. (Well, lots of things Youtubers say are annoying, but this is an obvious one.)

Re-promoting this video to the front page as a VideoSift Classic. Originally published on Friday 15th December 2006 (promotion called by gold star member karaidl)

Unfortunate that I never put this one the sift... you get so used to seeing things here first that you don't realize when something hasn't been posted to the sift that you've seen quite a while ago and is actually quite awesome.

Good for you, rembar.
