TRON Reboot Ep. 1 - "Throw the disc!"

Reboot....your ass!
blankfistsays...

Maybe he was making reference to the 'turd' allusion in your name and meant to call you something like haunted turd... you know... 'spooky dookie'. I have no reason to believe this to be accurate, but, hey, it's kind of funny.

burdturglersays...

Yeah that is kinda funny. I guess next time when he calls me a nigger you can come up with some other joke. Like maybe he meant "nagger" .. because I nag him about being a fucking racist. Haha. That racism sure is funny! What do I know though, I'm just a spook, this don't concern me none. I sure is sorry Masta!

Fjnbksays...

Why is this in discussion? It's the comment that's causing the controversy. And this isn't a clear-cut case of racism at all. I honestly didn't know that "spook" was derogatory.

Edit: And don't downvote the video because of a comment. That's mean-spirited and petty.

burdturglersays...

First off, I downvoted the video because it was BORING. Hence the "yawn" in the first comment.
Secondly, just because you don't know what something means doesn't mean anything at all.
QM knew what it meant.
Throw "spook" into google right now.
What do you see at the top of the page?
"A derrogatory slur for a person of African descent. ie: [Nigger]"
Do you HONESTLY think he was calling me a ghost or a spy? .. lol
Those are the only other things it could mean.

ffordsays...

Yes, "spook" has different meanings depending on the context. The only context I've ever heard it used to describe an intelligence operative is by conspiracy theory nutjobs (X-Files, anyone?), and the only people I've ever heard use it to describe ghosts are very old or dead (in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spook). As a racial epithet, I always associated it with old white southerners, and quantumushroom's grammar strongly suggests that context.

What any of this has to do with the video is beyond me. I just wish I didn't have to get 25 star points to downvote the damn thing.

RhesusMonksays...

This confusion about the word "spook" is ridiculous. I mean seriously worthy of ridicule. There is no question of its veracity as a slur--those who claim ignorance reveal an unfortunate insufficiency in their vocabularies. This is a fact. As to the heart of the matter, QM has very clearly shown himself in the past to be both of sufficient mind to know this meaning of this word, and willing to use words in the as he did above. However, did he know that the Turgler is indeed of a demographic for whom this word is offensive? I certainly had (and still have) no idea. Depending on how this works out, I think it could be a violation worthy of higher attention.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)

^I think your assumption that all people should know what that means is a bit US-centric. I'm a US ex-pat living in Australia, and I had to search my deep memory for that term used as a racial slur. I don't think I've ever heard it used that way here.

deputydogsays...

i didn't know burdy was/is black either. and i'd previously never heard of the word 'spook' being used in that context.

still, can we start a poll or something, maybe a separate talk post? i hear these kind of things bring out the best in people.

this is more "satire"?
Or do we just call black people "spooks" here whenever we feel like it now?

if he isn't, well.. perhaps QM's comment was just a distasteful jab for the "yawn"

either way, I'd say a hobbling is in order (at least) to get the point across that that language is unacceptable, regardless of the race of the person it was directed at

And, might I add, rather promptly.

Actually, I think he got banned for using the word "nigger," although I don't know anything about the situation. However, if you scroll further down, you see another post of his in all caps. That, to me, seems more offensive than his first post there, and the more likely culprit to securing him a shiny new ban.

I don't think it's too out of the question to consider that many people may not have heard of the word "spook" within the context in which we're discussing. The other word is the more commonly referenced one, and the last time I heard "spook" was in the new Eastwood film 'Gran Torino.' I knew the word before that, but it's far more rare.

QM certainly did know what he was saying, however.

Sarzysays...

Yep, QM clearly knew what he was saying, and whether or not he knew that Burd is black is irrelevant. So can we just hobble him now or whatever needs to be done? Or does every dispute need to be as big of a spectacle as possible?

blankfistsays...

Wait, burd is black? News to me. Not that it should matter, but it would put a different spin on the whole thing.

Also, anyone else finding it ironic that we're all up in arms over the use of the word "spook", yet the more offensive words have already been used in this post?

@ForgedReality:

No, EndAll's brother got banned for using "spook", because the user who dropped the N bomb is different than the one who used "spook." See:

Just because some of you might not know "spook" is a racist term doesn't mean that it's not a slur or that it's not as bad as better known slurs. Also, I've lived in Nebraska, Florida, New York, Maryland, Colorado and Wyoming, and in every one of those places people knew that "spook" was a slur. I'm guessing it's the same all over the U.S., and in Canada too. But I suppose that's besides the point, because even if it's a slur only familiar to a few members, then it shouldn't be allowed.

For example, most of us now know (thanks to George Allen) that "macaca" is a racist term, even though it's quite uncommon in most places. So should we allow members to call black people "macacas" because of its relatively low usage?

And to those who want to cry "CENSORSHIP!", because someone always wants to throw freedom of speech into these things, please reorder your priorities. Like it's been said a million times before, this is NOT a country. It's a web site. It's like a big house where there's always a party going on, and you're invited as long as you abide by a few rules. I know if someone referred to black people as "spooks" in my house I'd show them the door.

I don't want this place to turn into a shit hole where people can hurl racial or ethnic slurs with impunity. That'll attract the wrong kind of people, and then watch the advertisers fly out the door when they see their wares being advertised next to shit like "spook." And then say goodbye to VideoSift.

Based on the precedent established by the Westy affair I'm going to hobble QM. I fail to see how QM's usage of "spook" could have been meant in any other way except as a racial slur. I leave it to the admins to decide how long he should be hobbled.

What about referring to penises? Like this sentence, for instance: I like to spit on my forefinger and thumb and rub the head of my spook until it spits back. Is that okay?

I would think that most people have heard it in common use in this context on cartoons such as Scooby Doo where it's used in most episodes. I suppose those cartoons are mostly quite old, though.

I haven't heard of the racist use of this word in the UK, but as said above, it appears to mainly be a US thing. Once again, I learn from The Sift.

you guys are just now noticing that all QM does is try to cause agitation?

Dunno why he's not banned in the first place other than he's not really deserving of the infamy.

But feel free to ban him so he can join the ranks of the liveleak trolls.

Such types of comments couldnt make the situation any clearer... he's not going to stop, and maybe he can't. Maybe it's an obsession to have his paranoia proven wrong.

He does seem to be obsessed with the following notion:

“The likelihood of one individual being right increases in direct proportion to the intensity with which others are trying to prove him wrong.”

But he's forgetting a key characteristic from that scenario is missing in reality -- no one is trying here - they are just flat out succeeding. His fantasy of Validation will occur with his banning. Give him, and every other person tired of his bullshit, an early Christmas present. Win win.
