TED: How to tie your shoe laces the right way

"Terry Moore found out he'd been tying his shoes the wrong way his whole life. In the spirit of TED, he takes the stage to share a better way. (Historical note: This was the very first 3-minute audience talk given from the TED stage, in 2005.)" - TED

After tying my shoes I just tuck the laces into the sides of my shoe, which solves two problems. With the 500 yards of lacing that seem to come with shoes now it keeps it out of the way and from looking ridiculous with its big floppy bow. Plus it seems to keep tension on the knot thus keeping it in a state of being tied.

Last time I bought running shoes one of the employees showed me a variation that keeps the laces secure while running.

Basically it's like the way he shows in the video, but on both parts of the knot you wrap it twice around instead of once. It's much more secure and just as easy to undo.

... of course then I figured out how bad running shoes are for running, but it's still nice to know.

I've been wearing only vibram five-finger shoes for over one and a half years now. I did wear some tennis shoes a couple of months ago for a couple of hours. It was the funniest thing how they made the top of my feet itch.

Wow. I would never have guessed how quickly shoe Nazis would take issue on The Sift. No offense meant though... I agree... I'm just WAY too lazy to convert in a way that would be beneficial to my self.

After watching this video I realized...I've been tying my shoes correctly my whole life.

I was actually taught to tie my shoes by my grandfather, who was left handed. As a lifetime righty, it's about the only thing my left hand is good for. Apparently, one of the advantages of tying your shoes left handed, is you form the same (better) version of the knot by the traditional "over" method. Score another one for grampa.

I believe the Ian Knot is a faster way to achieve a similar result. It's what I use, and though it is not perfectly secure like a double knot, I'd call it 99% and still easy to undo.

The Ian Knot achieves the exact same result, and more quickly.

But for the sake of argument, say you want to keep tying your shoes the same way you always have but want to get the strong form of the knot - this guy is still going about it inefficiently, I believe.
The gentleman in this talk recommends wrapping the loop the other way, which is fairly counter-intuitive and must be re-done each time the shoe is tied.
However, you can achieve the same result by wrapping the initial wrap (at the base of the knot) the opposite direction. Even if it "feels wrong" to do it, you still only have to do it once in a blue moon, as long as you never completely unlace that wrap. (I use an Ian Knot, but I still leave the base wrapped when I "untie" my shoes.) Then you can tie the upper, more complicated portion of the knot exactly the same as you always have, using the muscle memory you've cultivated over all these years.

I learned to tie correctly because in cartoons (my model for everything) the loops fall perpendicular to the foot.

Also, I didn't know James Lipton was the first TED speaker.
