Ruin - Post-Apocalyptic Short CGI Film

I would pay to see this as a feature.

Had me until he accelerated with his hand off the throttle!

And went into a pitch black tunnel with no headlight. Little things like that take me out of this. Foliage in the high rises was major overkill,(full trees? Seriously?) the chaser plane and even the seeker missiles it dropped had apocalyptic rust on them...

You guys didn't get that he was some kind of cyborg that controlled technology with his hands? And yes, given enough time, trees will growanywhere.

I would be more skeptical of a skinny hipster surviving the apocalypse, along with his own suicidal style of motorcycle riding.

quantumushroomsays...

He probably also had cybernetic eyes to see in the tunnel.

Due to not specifying how much time after the Apocalypse this was occurring, the fact that we have the capability to kick one off right now, the speed of progression of scientific developments and the good atmosphere of the short film, the below list of potential conflicts are not necessarily conflicts and were happily disregarded upon noticing them.

Trees/foliage in the building.. could have been taking place 100 years after the Apocalypse, more than enough time for unrestricted plants to grow freely in any direction.

Fall from a 20+ story building doesn't crack open a strongbox, but a kick did.. genetic engineering, his kick could have had the little extra punch the box required.

Stupid guy driving into a tunnel without lights probably wouldn't be smart enough to keep himself alive in a variety of basic situations.. desperation + the cybernetic eyes Quantumushroom mentioned.

Driving just in front and into one of the lines of fire in an attempt to dodge the bullets.. maybe had to dodge a rock, or was high as a kite.

Accelerating without throttle.. may have redesigned the bike, living mostly on your own would require a range of skills, such as being your own mechanic, he didn't seem too worried about jumping off it and it being damaged.

Just make stuff up for the situation to work if you have to.. surely we've all had enough practice doing this with Hollywood.

You would pay for "Motorbike Chase: The Movie"?

How many gears did that motocycle have?

I am no expert but from my hearing, he was upshifting about every five seconds

Till around half time of this chase scene, I counted about 35 up-shifts and maybe 3 down-shifts and then I lost interest.

I'm envious of the visual talents of the people involved, but I'm also endlessly annoyed when such effort is applied with less care for the narrative, the why of it. The concern always seems to be the how.

It's why I'm so enamored with Pixar. The story, the WHY of it, seems to always be the most important thing (Cars 2 aside). There was nothing in this we haven't seen before, but again, it was very well executed on a number of levels.

I hope whatever these talented artists tackle next has an equally captivating story, and not another tired, derivative premise.

I thought the same thing then I realized he knew his opponent so well (the missles) that he knew they would provided enough light for him to navigate by that's why he waits till he can see the light at the end of the tunnel to destroy them.

What is it with you negative Nellies? I thought it was a cool short video, and I think it could be a cool full length movie. What the hell did you guys do when you watched Speed Racer and Gobots and shit when you were kids? What in your lives turned you all into such pissy gits?

"This cartoon has such unrealistic shifting. I can't be bothered with this!"

LOL! So sad...

ravermanjokingly says...

INDEED.

I for one would like an in depth discussion on the realism of this animated featurette so i don't feel so inadequate that i have no ability to make anything anywhere near as talented as this.

- the pulse rockets on the chasing missile thingies don't seem to be adequate to keep them aloft
- They aren't positioned centrally balanced to stop them crashing into the ground immediately.
- They also would run out of fuel and would never be able to go fast enough to catch a motor bike.
- He appeared to have magical LED implants in his hands and we all know that noone has these.
- The flying ship hovered on two small rotors which clearly would not be large enough to fly a armoured vessel carrying ammunition of this type.
- Electro cutting swords don't exist.
- Plunging it into the "head" of a drone probably wont kill it as sensor arrays are more likely to be at the front rather than central flight and control circuitry.
- how did he get to the top of the building as elevators would no longer be working.
- How did he get down to ground level again so fast, it seems like only a minute.
- honestly i could go on but i feel much better about myself already.

Some people say that failing to enjoy something because i couldn't relax and accept suspension of disbelief is my problem - but i think if everything i watch themed on a fictional setting isn't 100% accurate and researched then not enough attention has been paid to avoid me from ranting pointlessly on and on and on!

I'm surprised no one came up with "Zomg he flew off a motorbike at like 80 kilometers an hour in to a solid metal flying object and didn't instantly explode and break every bone in his body!".

Pedantic whiney bitches, putting the FU in fun for years now.

OT about the video, looking forward to the continuation, I enjoyed it.

Exactly. Or he simply could see because of the bright light of the drones!

The real funny thing was, that his bike had perfect traction on a road with decades of dirt, plants and potholes created by the plants - with tires that seemed to be at least 40 years old.

As in most motorcycle movies, the boring "downshift" scenes always wind up on "the cutting room floor"...

Nice change of tone on videosift in the last few months I see. Interesting.

If there were a few more "sad" "negative nellis" that "feel inadequate" when faced with such talent, we would have been spared many stupid movies that started of as one nice special effect and had NOTHING ELSE to bring to the table.

Just imagine a world without G.I.Joe, Matrix (at least Nos. 2 and 3), Transformers 1-3, Avatar, Clash Of The Titans, etc. etc. etc..a happier, saner place I'm sure.

And because its only irony and because I am such a nit-picker, I'm not going to activate the "sarcasm" flag.

Science fiction can justify anything because almost anything IS possible. Suspension of disbelief plays too much into our own environment and timeline -- think about your own life as a stage play 400 years ago and MAYBE you'll consider suspending it a bit more.

His hands glow when he touches a mobile device, so for crying out loud, maybe he has extra signals planted in his brain (via nanotech) to provide additional motor control via WiFi, thus steering the motorcycle with one hand. I just listened to a PhD in bioengineering at Wonder Con say that the idea of creating new signals in the brain for additional limb control is not so far fetched. ("Science in Science Fiction" panel by the authors of this book.)

However, lack of exposition in any shape or form does not work for me -- it's just fantasy at that point. I don't need to be eviscerated by constant exposition, but I need to at least know the ground rules. I felt like this was a subpar combination of Advent Children, the T2 motorcycle chase scene and every Half Life chase scene. More stimulation for my brains PLZ.

(On a side note: BUT! it was good fun and was made to display technical skill, not simply to be judged by a group of non-industry laymen, so upvote because the team who made this has TALENT.)
