Introducing the Compact Disk

Love this kind of future history - and amazing that the CD is already almost a forgotten relic. Time's moving faster.

I believe this is from the Australian show Beyond 2000 (or possibly one of its other incantations such as Beyond Tomorrow, or Towards 2000, in which a lot of the same personalities were featured--Iain Finlay, for one). I used to watch the fuck out of it as a kid. I wish I could find more than the 2 or 3 full episodes that I have online. Fun to look back on what people thought the future would look like, and see how accurate their predictions were.

Also, this show's theme music was unforgettable.

It's funny how he talks about the dynamic range of CDs, when producers decided pretty quickly that range was for pussies and What We Needed Was MOAR LOUDNESS!!

Regarding the scratch proof thing, apparently, the original spec for the CD was very fault tolerant. You could actually burn a cigarette hole through it and it would still play. However, it only held 60 minutes of music and the head of audio at Phillips demanded that it could hold 74m for one of Beethovens symphonies (I forget which one).

That story is probably apocryphal though.

I took that as scratch-proof within normal operation. Records are read by the same thing that tends to damage them, whereas lasers don't make any physical contact.

How I miss silver colored audio equipment. Everything today is so black I can never see what I'm doing without a flashlight.

CDs were overpriced in my city, usually around $25. Until a new store opened, selling them for $13-15 then for 1 year everything tumbled down. It finally equalized out to under $20, right before the digital wave hit.
