rottenseedsays...Seriously...we've got to put an end to these good-fer-nothing children suckling off the teat of society. I can't wait for them to grow up either.
But until then...let's beat the shit out of 'em

Yeah yeah. We all know your girlfriend is this close to dumping you because your spunk is drunk, quit projecting Marshall
blankfistsays...I wish more parents would smack the shit out of their kids.
bareboards2says...I'm getting used to the Trolliness. I just sigh and move on.
I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.
I hope this makes Top 15. It might change some lives.
berticussays...The NZ government is big on 'shock' ads to try and curb male teen drink driving. The ads don't work. They are a spectacular failure. But they keep ramping up the shock value anyway. I suspect, sadly, that the same would apply in this domain.
blankfistsays...But seriously, we're not getting the whole story here. We don't know what happened before the camera was turned on. Quite possibly the kid did something really bad, and the father is trying his best to teach him a lesson. But the kid won't listen. Instead he chooses to talk over his father, mumbling to the camera, and ignoring his father completely.
What we see here is probably hours after the incident has escalated to where the kid won't listen without a good knock on the head.

HEY! My girlfriend is close to dumping me for a lot of reasons, but it's hardly because she drinks my spunk...or my spunk is drunk by anybody...except me...I was curious.

I just don't agree with that. Trying to stop teens/adults from doing harm to themselves is nigh on impossible, people think it won't happen to them so they ignore all warnings. Helping to bring awareness to child abuse by using shock tactics is entirely different. An adults natural protective instinct would mean that they are more likely to want to help a kid who is being abused than heed advice on smoking/drink/drugs/gambling etc. etc.

It's changed my life...and my childrens' lives. I used to beat them to shit every day when I would come home. After I saw this, though...I really reflected on what kind of impact this may be having on my children and the rest of their lives, so I have since stopped. THANKS PSA, just like always you know how to oversimplify a problem so that even I can understand it.

I would be worried if you could actually "hear" me. In fact, I'd recommend having that checked out seeing as how we're conversing on a text-based medium.

berticussays...Well my reply would be a less douchey version of what rs just said. I am fully in support of the spirit of what they're trying to do -- I just suspect this ad will be totally ineffective. Would be only too happy to be wrong.

alien_conceptsays...It won't stop child abusers. It might make people take their blinkers off and open their eyes to some of the signals that a kid is being abused and report it. And oversimplifying is good for stupid people

rottenseedsays...I do think you're right. About a month ago I saw a woman putting her child into a car seat in the back of her car. The child wouldn't sit still so she punched the kid in the face. I didn't know what to do, but now I know it's bad thanks to this PSA.>> ^alien_concept:

alien_conceptsays...You're* (or was that you assuming a stupids identity?)
And I get where you're coming from, but you know how it is. Life gets in the way, you worry about your own shit, forget about everything else. Then you see one of these ads, one you've seen before tons of times even and it sparks a memory of that kid down the hall who flinched when you said hi last week... eh, you know what I'm getting at

bareboards2says...I'm not an expert on how to stop the cycle of violence with abusers. I'm just a tree hugging, softie old liberal who looks at the world through psychological colored glasses.
Here's my intuitive, uneducated, unresearched response to how this PSA might be helpful....
Abusers tend to have been abused themselves.
They abuse because they get caught up in their own anger, it's not a conscious choice.
IF IF IF they see this PSA, in a moment when they aren't angry and out of control, they might -- just might -- identify with the kid in the video and understand that maybe -- just maybe -- they have a problem and get help.
Then there is the kid's point of view.
They also can identify with that kid.
They get to see that the abuse is wrong.
That others see it as wrong.
That, dare I say, It Gets Better.'
So yeah, in my Pollyanna, I want the world to get incrementally better through positive action way, I hope this PSA helps change some lives.
Now I shall skip off happily, singing la la la to myself and to the butterflies flitting merrily 'bout my head.
gwiz665says...I wish more kids beat up their parents.
peggedbeasays...The idea that the abused grow into abusers is kind of.... meh.... Only about 30% of people who were abused as children grow up to abuse their own kids. Because 70% of us grow up to see ourselves in the eyes of every frightened child ever.
Abuse is about anger and it's about power. It's the inability to cope with stress or feelings of powerlessness. It's rampant in areas of high poverty, but certainly isn't non-existant in the homes of the wealthy.
Sure, I like the IDEA of PSA's.. but generally find them targeting the wrong side of the issue. This PSA targets the symptom, but not the root. If the root cause of domestic violence is power and an inability to cope with stress productively, then why can't we have a campaign to teach positive coping skills and educate little people and big people and even bigger people how to productively manage stress and take control of their own lives? ..... oh, right.. because that might actually EMPOWER people instead of just scare and depress them.

Because you can't teach people how to cope and manage stress in a 30 second advert?
peggedbeasays...nope, but you can direct them to places where they can learn the tools, or scrap the psa and use the money to teach stress management classes in schools. >> ^alien_concept:

It's not worth him being the drunkard he'll inevitably become...
Paybacksays...That kid has a future as a movie stunt double, his timing is excellent.
SDGundamXsays...I don't understand why everyone is arguing about whether this commercial will or won't stop child abuse. It's pretty clear the commercial isn't designed to stop child abuse--it's supposed to raise awareness of the non-profit organization ISPCC and hopefully get them some more donations and volunteers so they can continue providing services for children and teens (see their "what we do" section of their website).
Normally I don't mind trolls and even occasionally find them pretty funny, but it seems like they've pretty much gotten most people here to miss the point of the video this time and I think that's a shame.
