Farhad2000says...Andrés Torres Segovia, (February 21, 1893 – June 3, 1987) was a Spanish classical guitarist, and later nobleman, born in Linares, Spain who is considered to be the father of the modern classical guitar movement by most modern music scholars.
Segovia claimed that he "rescued the guitar from the hands of flamenco gypsies," and built up a classical repertoire to give it a place in concert halls. In recognition of his contributions to music and the arts, Segovia was ennobled June 24th, 1981 by the King of Spain (S.M. el rey Juan Carlos) who elevated Segovia into the first hereditary marquess of Salobreña.
Leyenda (Asturias) is a work of classical music written by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz. Originally written for piano in G minor, it was Francisco Tárrega who transcribed it for guitar and put it in its most recognizable key, E minor. It is the most famous section in a suite entitled "Suite Española" (Op. 47), noted for its delicate, intricate melody and abrupt dynamic changes.
Honestly if this doesn't get at least 100 votes, am leaving VS. Because next to the dynamite appeal of Jake Shimabukuro, Andrés Segovia is a thermonuclear weapon.
Deanosays...Fair enough Farhad, I'm off to register 100 fake accounts.
Deanosays...Superb. Really this is why I can watch clips through Videosift all night and never turn on my tv. In fact I rarely watch tv these days - I really don't need to see celeb reality shows and dumbed down news programming.
Back to Mr Segovia, he makes that look so effortless, it makes me frustrated how I can't even change between simple chords. Maybe I should start learning again...
plastiquemonkeysays...this just gets more and more beautiful. thanks for finding this, farhad...
i really hope this gets 100+ votes!
tooleysays...My favorite piece, by the best guitarist. Excellent.
fdisksays...What? I liked Segovia because I thought he sounded like flamenco. Boo!
Long live Rodrigo y Gabriela! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8dPso79Z9I
Farhad2000says...Philistine.
Docsays...Although this is by no means his best performance, it is good to see Segovia in action.
I take issue with the comments, however. There is no need to trash one performer in order to extoll another. Whether it's Jake Shimabukuro, Joe Pass, Sabicas, Manitas de Plata or Segovia, each has there unique skills and charms. It's not either-or, thank god, it's all and more.
mauz15says...Quality post as usual from farhad, keep up the good work , posts like this have made me a VS addict. Segovia and Paco De Lucia are my favorites.
Farhad2000says...Clearly Sarcasm is dead.
Why not add the clip to VideoSift fdisk?
Thanks Mauz15 and Deano.
pigeonsays...mine soul is soothed.
brendotroysays...farhad, if I had a nickel for every time you wrote, "clearly, sarcasm is dead," I'd have a lot of nickels.
Nice post, though.
thecosmicshamesays...I saw this on PBS a while back. And if its good enough to make me not flip past PBS, it certainly belongs on the sift.
Petition to sticky this on the top fifteen til Farhad gets his 100!
boomsays...farhad, would you be mad if i down voted?
nice find. awesome video. but i think its fake.... if that were possible.
NordlichReitersays...i play electric lead, and acoustic lead. But i have never been able to finger pick like these pros. Im not sure if boom really thinks its fake, but its not. Ive played with some mariachi style pickers and they can really move, but i pull out the electric and we even out!
Its great to hear and see some one other than that Stephan guy who likes to sell the guitars on TV.
Great find Farhad.
mauz15says...lol its not fake, he is one of the masters of Classical Guitar. My father has all his records and I've seen people playing almost at his level.

Deanosays...I'm worried for you Farhad, is this going to get at least 100 votes?
conansays...Whoops, there´s another one from me :-)
swampgirlsays...give the baby what he wants...(100 votes) ;-)
LadyBugsays...what is the time frame you are giving this, farvester?? looks like you have 51 votes to go!
Farhad2000says...January 1st 2007
rensays...I'm upvoting for the glasses, I really think the music tag is being misused here
Goofball_Jonessays...This is fake of course, it's all CGI, you can tell. Nice try, but it's obviously fake.
Ryjkyjsays...Wow. Absolutely Beautiful, but "rescued guitar from the flamenco gypsies"? It's too bad we can't post a video of Django Reinhardt kicking the crap out of this guy with two fingers.
Farhad2000says...It's not about skill level between flamenco and classical guitar, but rather the acceptance of the guitar as instrument for classical music performance.
dagsays...Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)
Pretty good, but honestly, does it compare with the guy in the related videos section below playing the Simpsons theme song? Try that Mr. "Andrés Segovia "(if that is your real name).
Now we'll see if sarcasm is dead.
Farhad2000says...Hoisted by my own petard... Damn.
djsunkidsays...Are there no films of Django playing? That would be a shame.
I have definitely heard better Segovia. I think I'm going to upvote anyway, on the strength of segovia himself. I just don't like this particular piece.
djsunkidsays...(i haven't upvoted Jake Shimabukuro, and I don't plan to)
Halon50says...I've been a long, long time lurker here. Just created an account to upvote this!
I've always been a fan of Ottmar Liebert, Jesse Cook, and other such guitarists. It's really refreshing to see where they may have gotten their own inspiration!
Deanosays...Hmmm you created an account just to upvote this? Welcome!
There's a certain irony here given the comments on the votes in the Jake sift....
LadyBugsays...33 votes to go, farveman!!
"I'm watching you, Wazowski. Always watching!" ~Roz from Monsters, Inc~
Farhad2000says...His hands have contorted to fit the guitar it seems. The man is so talented. I watched this countless times now and it always hits home.
Deanosays...I don't see how these extra votes will materialise...
Farhad2000says...Alas! Tis time to say goodbye...
Deanosays...What if it gets 100 votes *eventually*? Stay around!
Someone should work out how many submissions actually get over 60 votes - not many I'm guessing.
LadyBugsays...this is why you shouldn't make statements like that, farve-man!!! it hasn't hit 100 votes and it's past jan 1, 2007!!!
*runs back to cubby hole*
Farhad2000says...When the revolution comes, the insects will be the first against the wall.
fireflysays...Hey! Quit pickin' on the insects!!
Just for that, no vote!
nah, Segovia's too good...
stephantualsays...Reality check. Andres is brilliant, yes. But it's still a guy playing guitar the regular way. Jake's video was a big success because he played his instrument in a non-conventional fashion, making viewers go 'Wow! I didn't know that ridiculous ukulele could make such beautiful sounds'. It was all about the 'surprise' factor. I see nothing 'surprising' in that video. And I don't think it's worth leaving the sift either. Just my 2 cents of course...

LePierresays...I missed this first time around. Thanks for the repromote!
upvote to all hell
qualmsays...I don't believe it! Farhad!? I watched this video fully expecting Segovia's guitar to turn into a new fancy rifle or something.
sirexsays...upvote for awesomeness. - not my sort of acoustic guitar music, but i recognise its excellence.
Farhad2000says...Finally after 242 days!
Constitutional_Patriotsays...awesome... I didn't realize this was here before.. I used to transpose this on the bass guitar.. amazing piece to play. *upvote for *quality post
Deanosays...And this should really be on *bravo
