Guitar Masters - Andrés Segovia plays "Asturias"

Farhad2000says...

Andrés Torres Segovia, (February 21, 1893 – June 3, 1987) was a Spanish classical guitarist, and later nobleman, born in Linares, Spain who is considered to be the father of the modern classical guitar movement by most modern music scholars.

Segovia claimed that he "rescued the guitar from the hands of flamenco gypsies," and built up a classical repertoire to give it a place in concert halls. In recognition of his contributions to music and the arts, Segovia was ennobled June 24th, 1981 by the King of Spain (S.M. el rey Juan Carlos) who elevated Segovia into the first hereditary marquess of Salobreña.

Leyenda (Asturias) is a work of classical music written by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz. Originally written for piano in G minor, it was Francisco Tárrega who transcribed it for guitar and put it in its most recognizable key, E minor. It is the most famous section in a suite entitled "Suite Española" (Op. 47), noted for its delicate, intricate melody and abrupt dynamic changes.

Honestly if this doesn't get at least 100 votes, am leaving VS. Because next to the dynamite appeal of Jake Shimabukuro, Andrés Segovia is a thermonuclear weapon.

Superb. Really this is why I can watch clips through Videosift all night and never turn on my tv. In fact I rarely watch tv these days - I really don't need to see celeb reality shows and dumbed down news programming.

Back to Mr Segovia, he makes that look so effortless, it makes me frustrated how I can't even change between simple chords. Maybe I should start learning again...

Although this is by no means his best performance, it is good to see Segovia in action.

I take issue with the comments, however. There is no need to trash one performer in order to extoll another. Whether it's Jake Shimabukuro, Joe Pass, Sabicas, Manitas de Plata or Segovia, each has there unique skills and charms. It's not either-or, thank god, it's all and more.

i play electric lead, and acoustic lead. But i have never been able to finger pick like these pros. Im not sure if boom really thinks its fake, but its not. Ive played with some mariachi style pickers and they can really move, but i pull out the electric and we even out!

Its great to hear and see some one other than that Stephan guy who likes to sell the guitars on TV.

Great find Farhad.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)

Pretty good, but honestly, does it compare with the guy in the related videos section below playing the Simpsons theme song? Try that Mr. "Andrés Segovia "(if that is your real name).

Now we'll see if sarcasm is dead.

It's too bad we can't post a video of Django Reinhardt kicking the crap out of this guy with two fingers.

Are there no films of Django playing? That would be a shame.

I have definitely heard better Segovia. I think I'm going to upvote anyway, on the strength of segovia himself. I just don't like this particular piece.

I've been a long, long time lurker here. Just created an account to upvote this!

I've always been a fan of Ottmar Liebert, Jesse Cook, and other such guitarists. It's really refreshing to see where they may have gotten their own inspiration!

Reality check. Andres is brilliant, yes. But it's still a guy playing guitar the regular way. Jake's video was a big success because he played his instrument in a non-conventional fashion, making viewers go 'Wow! I didn't know that ridiculous ukulele could make such beautiful sounds'. It was all about the 'surprise' factor. I see nothing 'surprising' in that video. And I don't think it's worth leaving the sift either. Just my 2 cents of course...
