Friendly traffic cop says your ass will be violated

US Cop gives a German Tourist a Hard Time: "Boy, why are you driving in my country!!"
radxsays...

Those guys knew they were driving too fast, they talk about it just before the cop comes up to the window. And if this happened at home, the driver would have lost his license for a month.

Tymbrwulfsays...

The cop's got a point. American roads aren't built the same way as German roads. Going 98 anywhere is bound to be dangerous, but going 98 in America is guaranteed to get you pulled over, and you WILL get yelled and ticketed for speeding, and possibly other violations if the officer wants to teach you a lesson (ie.reckless/careless driving).

If you want to get away with a speeding ticket, you just gotta kiss-ass your entire way through the ordeal, or have a relative who's a cop.

carrotsays...

Harsh talking to! Oh man, I totally agree - that cop was way out of line. The only thing he could have done worse would have been to give them a ticket...which, if you've rented a car and got a ticket for going 30 miles over the speed limit would really suck. You'd have a court date in a foreign country and everything. Oh, and I suppose he could also have let driving offenses like going at 100mph (relative speed of 30mph if you collide with a car going the same effing direction at the speed limit? That's high...) slide. That would have been worse too.

Like, I get that he did not delicately phrase some of the less desirable aspects of the American penal system, but he was an asshole in order to avoid either (a) failing to do his job or (b) making life more miserable by getting them embroiled in a foreign legal system. And as much as you may not like it, perpetuating negative stereotypes about the life of prisoners helps enforce the legal system...it acts as a significant disincentive. His job is to keep the peace, which I suspect is a lot harder than he is being given credit for.

That is not to say I don't believe that cops can't act inappropriately or in ways that are offensive, but once again...consider how much nastier it would have been if he'd decided to be vindictive and actually cite them for the offense they were guilty of committing.

sirexsays...

Given how rarely someone has a camera on them to film these things, you could be forgiven for thinking every single US cop was like this. How often does a traffic stop go like this ? - pretty awful police work imho.

I don't care what the circumstances are, threatening someone with rape is never ok.

Where did you all grow up? I'm pretty certain I heard worse 'threats' than this direct at someone every single day in grade school from Grade 7 onward. The cop isn't threatening to do anything but charge them for the offense they committed. Sure, he goes on to suggest that they don't want to go to prison unless they like being raped. He also goes on to not even give them a ticket. If I could trade the two officers that have politely given me tickets with this guy, I would in a heart beat.

Seriously, does this officer really sound that threatening to people? Rude and inappropriate perhaps, but the only thing he threatened to do himself was to write them up for reckless driving, which was after all, his job.

Skeevesays...

I'm constantly defending police officers on the Sift, but there is nothing worthy of defending in this video. The cop was an asshat from the first second to the last.

It's his job to pull over speeders and give them tickets. It's not his job to pull people over and be a giant prick.

All he had to do was pull them over, be friendly (as long as they were being respectful to him), give them a ticket, remind them to slow down, and drive away. Instead he provides perfect fodder for people who already dislike police officers.

I would agree with you, right up until the part where he doesn't even give them a ticket!

The guys he 'threatened' and was so rude to can barely contain their laughter until the officer is out of earshot.

EMPIREsays...

you know, it's not even the veiled threat that bothers me about this video.

It's the total lack of respect by the police officer. "germany boy"?? Who the fuck does he think he is to address people like that? It's sir or mam. I don't recall the german guy calling him "police boy", he called him "officer" as it is respectable, and as it should be.

I'm really not big on formal treatment, I have no problem if people I don't know don't call me sir, as long as they are not trying to be rude.

blankfistsays...

Wow, you statists, you're all a piece of work. So apologetic toward the shortcomings of government, but don't let pro-liberty policies make a mistake. Holy shit! The world will be your oyster.

csnel3says...

This cop was pissed because he accidently pulled over a foriegner. If he had a citizen on the line it would be ticket time!Hundreds of dollars maybe thousands for the system.
As soon as this prick realizes that "German boy" wont have to pay anything, he can just go home, never again to worry about that ticket that he got in the USA, he just acts like an asshole and lets the kid go.
We the citizens of the USA are the milk cows for these kind of pig farmers, not people from other countries that can just laugh and leave.

AnimalsForCrackerssays...

I've been let off a few times(I've also never run into an asshole cop in Maine) and was immensely appreciative, as I'm sure the drivers in this video were. This guy could have shown some decorum and gotten the exact same message across without reinforcing all those blatantly cliche'd stereotypes people have of cops and making every other cop look like a fucking imbecile by extension. Assholes like this unceremoniously throw at that goodwill that other professionals in their field have worked so hard to build up with the general populace right into the pooper.

Them getting off without a ticket should not be contingent on him therefore having the right to act like an unimaginative troll. I've had some hilariously sharp cops in the past who were intentionally trolling but doing so ironically, really laying it on thick to the point where there's no question they were taking the piss, and it only further endeared me towards them. This guy though is nothing if not sincere in his absolute dedication to being a giant douche.

The fact that rape in prison has so casually become a standard of our judicial system disgusts me.

This group is doing something about it. Don't dismiss it simply because they are religious. They are serious and proactive about stopping prison rape.

No he would not have lost his license, you are not from Germany I can tell.. When he drives at least 50km/h to fast, you will loose your driving license.

I hear this police officer did this because that German guy didn't pay his user fee.

I hear he did it because he's a xenophobic redneck, like the majority of the base of the republican party.

P.S. Don't get your panties in a twist just because 3-4 newbies are defending this guy.

Not a Republican. That doesn't seem to sink in. Don't get your vagina in a tizzy over your presumptions.

spawnflaggersays...

from the cops accent, this was in the southern usa. not sure which state exactly, but they don't really care about speeding that much, so I'm not surprised that he didn't give him a ticket (excuse the double negative). Also a lot more paperwork with international drivers licenses.

in the north and western usa, state troopers give tickets to everyone they pull over. if they are "having a bad day" you could get a ticket for doing 5mph over the limit...

and any US interstate highway is certainly capable of supporting 100 mph speeds. It's just the other drivers that make it dangerous.

And the laws of physics... This isn't the Indy 500 and your cars aren't built to have decent maneuverability at >100mph, so there's a vastly increased chance of multi-car pile-ups if everybody's going that fast. Even on the autobahn only a few crazy people in the fastest lane exceed 110mph.

Mammaltronsays...

This. He's not going to waste US taxpayers' money issuing a ticket which then needs to be processed and ignored and eventually cancelled, so he tries to scare the tourists into slowing down. That's about all he can do unless they're doing something worthy of arrest.

Not the best look when this is the only one of his thousands of traffic stops you see, but give the guy a break.

ding ding ding..

The cop was seeing quotas and $$$$ when he pulled this car over.
When they had international driver's license or whatever, and wouldn't pay any traffic fines (when is the next time they will be through Alabama or wherever), he knew he was getting and $$$.

Cops are no longer public servants, they are a local govt money generating service.

coolhundsays...

Normally I am the guy who hates police (as seen in my other comments), but this time I gotta say this guy was not only funny as hell, he was also extremely nice to not give them a ticket. 28 miles over is A LOT and in many states you get handcuffed and thrown into jail for that.

So I really dont understand all the hate against him. He did his job very well, and what I hear from that arrogant prick in the car, I wouldnt have been so nice.

csnel3says...

>> ^jmd:
since when do people from other countries not have to pay fines incurred by tickets?

FFS!! I wont pay a ticket from the next county , let alone the next state or the next fuckin country! And if I ever cross the pond and then get a ticket, I will not pay the fuckin ticket untill I come back again from across the pond, which may not happen in this lifetime!

And if I do get called out on an old ticket, I will claim to have forgot, and ask for forgiveness and pay the fine at THAT time.
