Fox News takes Rep. Wexler from the Colbert Report out of context ("I enjoy cocaine because...")

tgeffeneysays...

I too hate biased reporting, but I am not sure how in this case that is happening. Right after I heard the first segment from Fox, I could tell that Rep Wexler didn't actually enjoy cocaine and was just having fun responding to the question “let’s have some fun what are some things you could say that could cost you the election if you were contested. They made it clear that he was pretending to say stuff”. Seeing the unedited clips didn’t make me feel any different about the comical interview. Had do vote no on this for that reason.

barraphernaliasays...

I would like to respectfully dissagree with tgeffeney
Here's why I think it is biased.
1-A republican makes a fool out of himself all the time on these shows and it never makes the news.
2-Even if you may think it is obvious that Wexler is pretending and the full edit doesn't change your mind (I agree by the way) that doesn't mean the everyone would have the same view. There are plenty of people who would think differently depending on what edit they saw, and as scary as it is, those people get to vote just like the rest of us.
3-If Fox "News" thought it was going to be obvious to everyone that it was in jest, why would they run it at all. It wouldn't be any more newsworthy than Leno's monologue.

I also think it's worth mentioning that Fox "News" isn't the only network that went with this edit. That's the scariest part as far as I'm concerned, that the other networks follow Fox's lead.

KaiErsays...

Anyone who thinks this was intentional biased reporting on the part of Fox news, to put this man into bad light, should stay with the Democratic party.

It was a clip from comical interview, on the Comedy Network, and as far as I can tell, the Fox reporters were laughing as well. So, they cut out the pauses between the question and answers... yet they still kept the huge amount of laughter.

Get real.

Do you think you have a monopoly on understanding that it was clips from a comedy program? Believe me, even Republicans realize that.

Do you think it takes some sort of "investegatory reporting" to find out where this clip came from, and the intentions of the program for having the interview?

Come on.

Lethinsays...

if you guys need a reason on why fox news did this is because its a Slow Non-war/hard to make bush look good week and they needed something to distract the masses..... what you DONT hear in the news is about all the Missile the US just sold, or how they are not enforcing isreal to stop terrorizing other countries. hehe, i <3 fox and how see threw they are.

Kruposays...

James: "zing"

Seriously, though, I think the average VS-er will see the joke, but there's a lot of people who won't realize the video has been taken out of context.

And that's (one of the ways) rumours get started.

Wumpussays...

It was a frikkin joke. Anyone who thinks this was a serious piece to make this guy look bad is beyond hopeless. It was set-up as a comedy piece, the anchor said it was from Comedy Central, the laugh track was left in for pete's sake, and anyone who is vaguely familiar with Colbert knows he's a comedian. How could anyone take this seriously? There is no story here.

The only blame I'd lay is on Fox for wasting it's airtime with it, and on Congressman whats-his-face for putting himself in that position.

joedirtsays...

If you think it wasn't done on purpose. Check out tonight's TCR. Not only was it on Fox, it was on two morning shows, that just replayed the 'Ten Commandments' bit and said it makes politicians look bad.

You nay-sayers here, that say, if you disagree with Fox, you must be a Democrat... are simply laughable. Clearly Fox isn't pointing out the humour. But instead trying to make it seem like this politician is really that brazen.

What I find funny is that Fox doesn't mention that Incumbants have an insane re-election rate. The kind that makes politics and current Congress completely worthless.

Charonsays...

You giant government liberals make me laugh. You make fun of Fox all the time. The thing is, Fox is no more to the right than CNN is to the left, and MSNBC is so far to the left you may as well call them Pravda. Of course they enforce your giant government view of the world so you don't notice. The only way to get to the real truth is to avoid MSNBC, then watch CNN and Fox and know the truth is in the middle somewhere. Both networks present a version of the truth twisted to their agenda.
While Fox can't be defended lots of the time, no more than CNN can, I have to agree with those that point out that Fox was keeping up with the humor. If you don't see that, you are blinded by your hatred of Fox and anything that isn't far to the left.
The simple fact is government is bad, an evil that must be tolerated. Both parties are corrupted, the Democrats more so. The only real solution is to vote third party. Vote all the idiots in Washington out with more sensible choices.

James Roesays...

Charon, Check this out... I'm a huge liberal, I don't watch any of the news channels you just mentioned. However, the fact that other than fox they lean to the left is pretty clearly false.

http://www.thenation.com/doc/20030224/alterman2

All of our major media outlets bear responsiblity for not concentrating on any one of the numerous illegal activities perpetrated on the united states by our president. They all bear responsibillity for letting the ridiculous comments of the swift boat veterans gain tracation, and for not questioning the build up to the iraqi war.

As for the democrats being more corrupt than the republicans, can i just say Delay, Abramoff, Haliburton, etc....

joedirtsays...

I'll answer for Charon, TheNation is so left, that's why their studies consistently show their version of the 'liberal media bias'. I love the weak minded response by Charon. I hear it often, saying how liberal=big gov't and how far, far to the left MSNBC/CNN are. It's is truly, sadly laughable. All of them are corporate media, and any 'reporting' they do is filtered through ad revenues, ratings, and corporate interest. Period. Corporate media presents this fake differentiation to make them seem different, or even covering all biases, but in reality... it's just McD and BugerKing. Both take marching orders and editorial cues from the heads of these mega-corps that are controlled by as much money as politicians.

As for the seriously laughable 'big gov't' democrats... You are sadly an idiot. Look at how much gov't grew under Clinton and the biggest budget surplus in modern history. Now look at Bush's gov't under the worst deficits in.. well ever. Reagan, check. Bush Sr., check. This myth is brilliant that somehow democrats grow the gov't and republicans are fiscally responsible. Show me one scrap of evidence of ANYTHING you say. "both parties are corrupted, the Democrats more so"... You really must get your news from Fox News, because no one that can read would agree with that over the last few years.

theo47says...

Democrats are smarter than Republicans, and Republicans know it - which is why it bugs them so much when we point it out. Therefore, their entire existence is to spite the superior people on the left by continuing to be stupid and shallow.
The End.

Monstersays...

This is retarded. They obviously edited the video for time. They aren't going to show the whole clip without editing. It was not "taken out of context", it's apparent to anyone that it's a joke. Also, see http://videosift.com/story.php?id=6372 for an example of the same exact edit done by the Colbert Report itself.

And take the microphone out of your freaking mouth. You don't need hold it up against your lips for it to pick up sound. Or should I say "*PH*or it to *PH*ick u*PH* *PH*ound".

skepticalsays...

joedirt makes some good points...but there are a few promblems with his praise of Clinton.
Clinton took office shortley after the economy started to improveat the end of George H. Bush's admistration (during a breif recession). Clinton was able to grow the government and deficts were low, not due to any great managment, but simply because the economy was doing so well that the tax revinue more than made up for it. We could have had a chimpanze in the Oval Office at the time and the deficit would have been just as low (if not lower). There were plans to have had the budget completely balanced and much of the deficit paid off within several years simply by keeping the rate of increase in government speanding just slightly above (or at inflationary levels). Many Democrats (including Clinton) opossed this, calling slower rates of increasing speanding a "cut in speanding" and scaring people about cuts in the budget that would have never existed. Shortly before Clinton left ofice the economy started to shows signs of trouble again...

Then George W. Bush got elected, the economy was still winding down when 911 sent the economy into a tailspin. Bush then poured gasoline on the fire by increasing spending all over the board (not just for the military). The inevitable result was the budgetary mess that we have today. Frankly, from what I've been hearing, even many Republicans are fed up with the budget mess that he created.

In the end both of the two main parties only increase the government. Clinton was lucky to take office at the right time and wasn't some great economic leader. Presidents in fact have very little control over making the economy better, but they easily make it worse. Don't even get me started on how the past three administrations foreign policy decisions have created much of the mess we have today.

Sorry, I re-read my comments and they were a little harsh, but non-the-less too many people falsely, without any figures, facts, or clue repeat this mantra. It is maybe the most brilliant marketing program of all time. Republicans are fiscally responsible. Dems are big-government.

I can't find the OMB page that has graphs. Everything there is per capita, or some such numbers game. Plus reduced budget sometimes doesn't mean reduced spending. But you can view it against GDP growth. At the very least, we can expect the federal government to grow faster than GDP, but it is shocking how much faster it grow that inflation of GDP.. Thank Jebus for our immigration numbers and illegals adding in to tax base.

Average annual budget change as a percentage of U.S. gross domestic product during these administrations: BUDGET CHANGES
Roosevelt. 14.8%
Truman.... -8.6%
Eisenhower -1.3%
Kennedy... 0.2%
Johnson... 1%
Nixon..... 1.6%
Ford...... -1.4%
Carter.... 1.8%
Reagan.... -0.6%
G. Bush... 0.2%
Clinton... -1.8%
G.W. Bush. 2.4%

(From USA Today) The spending spike contrasts with the mid-1990s, when Republicans gained control of Congress and compromised with President Clinton on spending cuts that led to a $236 billion budget surplus in 2000.

You also have this version from USA Today / OMB. HOW PRESIDENTS COMPARE ON SPENDING -- Average annual change in spending for each category. All figures have been adjusted for inflation:
Spending: federal defense education(k-12)
Johnson... 6% 5% 31%
Nixon-Ford 3% -6% 3%
Carter.... 4% 3% 1%
Reagan.... 3% 4% 0%
G.H.W.Bush 2% -4% 5%
Clinton... 2% -2% 3%
G.W. Bush. 5% 8% 7%

How about this. How about all news stations are biased and you have to take what they say with a grain of salt. Obviously this is a funny clip on a parody news station. Everyone has tight buttholes when it comes to stuff like this. Laugh!!!
