Fixing The Bible

tgeffeney says...

You commit a grievous fallacy when you assume that the true primary warrants for Christian theology is what comes from a Hollywood production's interpretation. I advise you to look to more appropriate resources to understand an idea or concept in which you intend to dialog about. Just my $.02.

If you do decide to do a thorough investigation of why to believe in Jesus, you will not only discover that the evidence weighs heavily in favor of Christianity, but as a result you will also discover how glorious that knowledge can be.

To end, Hollywood would be more accurate if instead they had the character say "most of the seeming logical issues with the bible have been answered many times over, and... once you find HIM in the scripture, you will be changed for life."

If police did this in America, the ACLU and the NAACP would be filing lawsuits against the police before the guy hit the ground... touting human rights violations. If in California, the liberal legislation would give the the man $10,000,000 feeling he deserves it.

Kevin Smith's prolific use of the F-word just makes him sound juvenile. Does what he have to say not have enough flavor to skip peppering it with empty profanity?

Why is Sex a Sin?

tgeffeney says...

This video appeals to those that have already made up their mind that the theistic viewpoing on sex is wrong. However, no where in this entire 7 minute video, is one fact used as a warrant to support his tenuous theory. Normally, I would find it a waste of time to respond to such biased and unresearched material, but my guess is that there are people out there niave enough to use this as a proof text for atheism.

What is interesting, is that both atheist and theists would agree that sex is fine, in fact it is encouraged and needed. Like most religions of the world, even the narrator himself condones sex but only wth certain recommended "safeguards" - just as the theist do. It just seems that the theistic view is a little too constrained for his slippery slope I guess.

So lets discuss his warrants.

1. That all religions say they are the 1 true religion: That is a required state of anyone who holds a mutually exclusive belief just like it is with atheism. Otherwise, if they didn't think this, then the members would convert to what they did think was the one true religion (or non religion)

2. You can't question your own religion: I don't doubt that this happens (I have had Jehovah's witnesses at my door even tell me they are not allowed to read material that is antagonistic of their fait). But in many churches including mine, it is considered a grave mistake to not question and seek out truth. Even the bible itself admonishes us to do just that. The smartest men who have ever lived on this earth have all logically questioned their faith and more often than not to a significant degree have chosen to believe in a god.

3. Churches tell you to pray for guidance if you have doubts: So what? In my church, not only would we pray with you on the matter, but we could provide philisophical, scientific, historical, etc. evidence the help you with your your doubt.

4. Hell is a deterant for being bad and keeps congregates in line: This is a misunderstanding of Christianity (other religions aside). We are ALL bad (i.e. sinners) and no one deserves Heaven. God then gives us a choice to fellowship with him, an eternal choice. Once in fellowship, your desires for sinning dissipate. Your other eternal choice is to be separated from God.

And if this were gambling, lets compare the bets. Atheisism offers you a wager that pays almost nothing, but could cost you everything. Jesus offers you more than the biggest lottery payout ever, and it costs you nothing.

Stupid Design: God Is A Lousy Engineer

tgeffeney says...

I am surprised that anyone would consider the arguments made in this clip as well thought out. Consider the warrants and premises for nearly every aspect of his speach, and you realize you have to make some fairly irrational assumptions in order to make this argument.

I would add too, that for every less than perfect design characteristic, there are many absolutely amazing and remarkable ways in which the universe and the human are desiged. There are aspect of the cellular workings in humans,or the processing capabilities of the human brain, that no team of engineers ever have been able to design something even close to them. So this begs the question, at what level of perfection do we need in order to acknowledge a designer that is intelligent.

It is funny how when you listen to much of the atheists arguments, it can stregthen your belief in God. I myself became a theist by reading atheist text trying to argue against my christian friends. It didn't take long to realize that my arguments were weak and riddles with biased presuppositions.

The only rational thing at that point was to acknowledge HIM. And since I have done that, my life has been remarkably blessed and I am so thankful that I now know HIM.

Richard Dawkins vs. (ex-) Pastor Ted Haggard

tgeffeney says...

Hypocracy is indeed unnerving, and of course is rampant amongst christian circles.

However, Richard Dawkins criticises dogmatism when he himself is utterly "intolerant" of theological world views. If Science are those theories that have passed through the Scientific Method, then Evolution can not be considered science. In fact, one of the fastest growing branch of science are people that challenge the science of evolution.

Here is a brief but somewhat good website for those that would like to see that those that doubt evolution can do so with the use of science itself.

I like to think of it this way. No matter what you pick, a goat will be revealed. When you pick a door, you limit the options for revealing the goat to only two doors. It is like saying "show me one of the goats, but you can't open the door I select to do it."

Cool effects. Much of what was assumed true has been scientifically proven as impossible, but nonetheless, great way to show an idea of how the theory explains how we may have come to be.

Why do Atheists Care? One man's thoughts

tgeffeney says...

Interesting how the guy seeks to critisize religion, and then brings up points that really just critisize the religious. The argument of why attack theism still stands. What he should do, which is what I also do as a Christian, is to take issue with the abuses that are done in the name of religion.. Each of the following arguments are issues he has on the application of religion, not issues with God himself.

1. Boy Scouts limiting entry to theists only.
2. Blue Laws (after the advent of Christ, the legalism of the Sabath was done away with so I would agree with the narrator, that this is inappropriate)
3. Fanatics killing people in the name of religion (a abhorant evil that is made even worse by the fact it is done in God's name)

He goes on to say that the country was not founded Christian. Not sure why that means Atheists can feel right in attacking religion.
