FOX News laughs it up over atheists

FOX news mocks atheists for running a bus campaign in Washington DC saying: "Why belive in a god? Just be good for goodness' sake."

From Friendly Atheist:

Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade and Alisyn Camerota don’t understand the need for the bus campaign.

They say atheists just “need a hug.”

They say atheists are doing this because “misery loves company.”

They say we’re feeling “left out of Christmas” because we chose to.

Steve Doocy is really confused. After all, he “doesn’t feel left out during Ramadan.”

He also makes another idiotic comment about how the buses are supported by tax dollars and how uncomfortable this might make viewers. He says this right after they had mentioned how much the American Humanist Association is paying for the advertising. Apparently, he doesn’t understand how advertising works.

fucking idiots. laugh it up you thick twats.

"what are you talking about, 'there is no god'? you can't put that on buses!". yes you can, but unfortunately it'll take more than a poster to wake up the millions of brainwashed humans who believe the bible to be the truth.

this sort of shit makes me really angry. how dare these people attempt to slag off rational people who choose to believe in fact.

YUK YUK YUK! HAR HAR HAR! ....

"Misery loves company"? I know more than my share of extremely miserable religious folks. In fact, I know more miserable religious folks than atheists. Isn't is their believe that "God" makes your life a living hell on purpose in order to test your faith?

Fucking idiots.

Ahem, as a respectful theist who would never press my belief on you, some people may feel that this is pressing beliefs on others. Not to defend fox for their presentation of the matter, but to point out the hypocrisy of yours.

rgroom1says...

No outcry here, but:
There are Jesus etc. signs all over the place, and i'm sure that you are irritated by them.
Does it really surprise you that fellow humans would have the same reaction to yours?

Irishmansays...

There was NO outcry in Britain whatsoever about the same bus campaign.

During the winter solstice, the SUN stays low in the sky for three days, barely moving a shadow across a sundial.

After three days the SUN rises again, on the 25th December, and is reborn in the heavens.

If you stand and look out over the sea to the horizon at dusk or dawn, you can see God's SUN walking upon the water.

I hardly think this qualifies as "pressing beliefs on others". It's simply presenting another point of view which people can take or leave.

We see religious versions of this constantly - they don't offend me, nor do they convince.

What I find interesting is the suggestion that people "choose" their religion.

I actually didn't choose to be an atheist - it simply bears the mark of truth (however tentatively) for me. I find it amusing the implication that these christians (an assumption on my part), in turn, have "chosen" to be so. It could have just as easily been buddhism or scientology or islam - whatever. They all are equally close (or far) from reality for them.

Just seems so arbitrary.

Considering all the Jesus signs, giant crosses, door to door missionaries, pamphlets, guys handing out the new testament at bus stops/ in front of public schools, bibles in hotel rooms, scare tactics most of us put up with as children, and pressure many of us face from family memebers(especially during the holidays) a sign on a bus pales in comparison.

Those guys are douche bags, and they have their numbers wrong. Last time I checked in the US, 75% is christian, 10% of the remaining is non religious.

I think that's a good point, but what smart Atheists mean when they object to 'pressing one's beliefs on others' is not ads, which are part of the marketplace of ideas, but actually legislating one's beliefs on others, which is something entirely different.

Let them laugh...I laugh at them. Let's all laugh at each other for how seriously we take ourselves and our beliefs or lack thereof. We all die then whatever happens (or doesn't happen), happens (or doesn't).

Atheists have no reason to be alone on Xmas. The vast majority of winter traditions are NOT christian. Decorating with evergreens, exchanging gifts, singing carols, getting drunk on eggnog and wassail, gathering the family... These are all non-christian traditions that were absorbed into the church as part of western society.

I do pretty much everything on Xmas that christians do, except pretend it's the birthday of a fictional character who was originally described as being born in the spring.

Their lack of professionalism... I was going to say it's surprising but, well, it's really not... but that's the frustrating part about this piece. On some level, I feel I agree with them; I don't see the point of the message of these ads. I agree with the message, I just don't know why you'd make an ad out of it.

Christmas was celebrated in my family, but done as a family tradition with no religious connotations. We had a tree, lights, decorations, presents, etc. No crosses, Jesuses (Jesi?), mangers, etc. Technically it was more like a Yule celebration than Christmas.

Christianity functions like Microsoft; leveraging the same tactics, the three E's, to wipe out the competition. Always thought that parallel was quite funny... and sad.

I almost made it to the end of this video. Plus points for me.

I am an atheist, but I don't feel left out on Christmas. I believe in Cthulhu, and he doesn't put up with that shit. ENJOY YOUR PRESENTS OR DIE, HUMAN!

Kerotansays...

I remember that campaign in Britain. And there was no outcry. The British don't do outcries.

While other countries have revolutions, the British have satire.

But what do you expect from lying shit bag muck spreading faux news?

The truth?

amburglarsays...

How many people celebrate Christmas solely for the purpose of honoring Jesus's birth? Be honest. I don't believe in any god, and I love me some Christmas dinner and presents. I don't feel the least bit lonely around Christmas; I just feel happy that I don't have to spend most of it in church.

Fjnbksays...

I'm an atheist, but I love Christmas time. I even like the explicitly religious Christmas carols. To me, Christmas is best embodied by things like a Christmas Carol or the Nutcracker that have little to do with Jesus, but a lot to do with just being a good person.

soulmonarchsays...

I know an awful lot of agnostics and atheists, and every single one of them still celebrates Christmas. But this is the first time I have ever heard anyone even insinuate that non-Christians feel "left out" during the holiday season.

Yes, they CAN put up the advertisements. I just totally fail to see the need.
