Michael Steele:"VA Manual Encourages Vets To Commit Suicide"

amburglar says...

Funny. So today I talked to my dad - who happens to be a viet nam vet with depression and dementia- and he was yelling and crying about how his government wants him to kill himself. He couldn't remember where he heard/read it and spent half of our phone conversation shuffling through medicare statements trying to find the evidence. I consoled him and told him that surely he had misheard or misread something. And then I got home and saw this.

This isn't the first time. I am so sick of this. There is NO accountability for the media. It makes me want to scream.

Sure, organic farming may have a reputation of being for the elite only. But, from my perspective, my unemployed mother was growing and canning mostly organic vegetables in our rural home in Arkansas long before any of this hype. Why? Because our family of four lived off 20,000, we couldn't afford fresh veggies from the store, and pesticides weren't exactly cheap either. Over the last decade, I've LOVED watching this trend of popularizing and commercializing home/locally-grown food. We thought of it first, BOO-YA!

What the Problem Is Is "Is Is"

amburglar says...

>> ^MINK:
yeah, i was joking.
"improving" language means allowing it to evolve.
the "proper english" that grammar nazis defend is a snapshot in history. I don't know why they choose 1922 as the year to take their snapshot, but they seem to agree on it for some reason.
the joke is that the english they are defending is the result of hundreds of years of "mistakes", particularly in the era before writing, printing, or state education.
if you love english, you love mistakes. If you wanna be a grammar nazi, try learning lithuanian, you won't be the first linguist to admire its out-of-date mediaeval (medieval? mediæval?) standardised amish rigidity. The lithuanian word for computer screen literally translates as "viewgiver". Nobody uses it, they just lithuanicise "monitor" because "viewgiver" sounds so retarded.

The funny thing is is that what may be improper grammar, now may be proper grammar in 50 years; but that still means it's improper now. Who knows how these things are truly decided: consensus, what goes in the dictionary, what people say on TV? Even if language is evolving, it's still more than worth knowing correct grammar- if only for the sake of intelligibility (and the sanity of grammar Nazis).

Perfect Mashed Potatoes

amburglar says...

Good tips for boiling potatoes. Over boiling and over mashing is so common.

Another tip- add sauteed onions or shallots and a teaspoon or two of balsamic or red wine vinegar. Sounds weird, but is really good. You'll need less salt if you put in something sour. Much healthier with less salt!

Behold: the Atheists' Nightmare - the banana - "has a point at the top for easy entry"

I think deep down that the majority of Christians (excluding the more crazy/fanatical) are really pantheists, meaning they're in awe of nature, of existence - but don't actually believe in a supernatural being who has control over events.
At least I hope so. Otherwise, we're all fucked. ;-)

That's a nice idea. Hadn't considered that thought before, but I'm sure that's what kept me being a 'believer' for all those years. Existence is indeed something worthy of awe. It's probably hard, too, for people to experience that awe without placing the responsibility of it onto a divine being. Anthropomorphism at its best.

And am I the only one that peels bananas from the non-stem end? If you rip it at the stem it squishes the top of the banana. It's so much cleaner to puncture it with your nail, and rip it off. It even gets rid of that nasty nub at the end.

War on Gaza: HUGE protest, London, 28 Dec

Yet more evidence that Britain has slipped into dhimmitude; it lives by the whim of it's Mohammadan-troglodyte invaders

There was a similar protest in Portland, OR yesterday, with many of the protesters being anglos. Concerning this, I don't think anyone is living by the whims of arab immigrants; I think people are living by the conviction that genocide is wrong.

Timelapse of drivers failing to get up an icy hill

amburglar says...

Word, oohahh. I moved to PDX from St. Paul, MN two years ago, and I won't drive when it snows in Portland. There's a solid plate of ice on the ground this morning. . . They don't salt the roads here either so it doesn't melt until the cold breaks.

The way I look at it- it's nice to get a few snow days every winter, something I never got in MN.

I think this video is even better for sheer madness: http://www.videosift.com/video/Cars-play-pool-on-unbelievably-slippery-roads . This one is also from Portland.

How many people celebrate Christmas solely for the purpose of honoring Jesus's birth? Be honest. I don't believe in any god, and I love me some Christmas dinner and presents. I don't feel the least bit lonely around Christmas; I just feel happy that I don't have to spend most of it in church.

I'm sorry, but did anyone else get a little suspicious when they saw the flashing red "Alert" subheader right underneath Obama as he spoke? I know it's Fox Action News and all, but it seems like it's just one step away from being "Terrorist Alert" or "Muslim Alert"
