NBC News interview with Brian Williams Wednesday night, Edward Snowden talked about how 9/11 personally affected him, and charged that the government has exploited that tragedy to justify spying on American citizens.

He said, "It's really disingenuous for the government to invoke and sort of scandalize our memories to sort of exploit the national trauma that we all suffered together and worked so hard to come through to justify programs that have never been shown to keep us safe, but cost us liberties and freedoms that we don't need to give up and our Constitution says we don't need to give up."

Williams challenged him, asking why the government wouldn't want to "cast the widest net possible" after a horrible attack on the country. Snowden argued that the U.S. can't turn into a security state and if the American people want to be free, "we can't become subject to surveillance, we can't give away our privacy, we can't give away our rights."

It's funny that Williams brings up pearl harbor. We over-reacted to that too by forcefully imprisoning tens of thousands of US citizens because of their race alone. Something they've worked hard over the last 60 years to remove from public consciousness.

The idea that they give a fuck about you or your constitutional rights has been proven false repeatedly if they have an inkling of an opinion that you or someone 3 steps removed from you has done something they don't like, illegal or not.

He's a world hero. Whether he thinks he deserves it or not, or whether he intended to or not, at the very least he's started the process that will wake the population of this planet up.

There are a lot of problems for us to get past - peak oil, global warming and corruption of the capitalist system. The sooner we get started on fixing those things, the easier they will be to fix.

Let's not forget the fact that Hawaii was a colony, not exactly our mainland but taken by us. And that we were threatening Japan daily with talk of how our planes would burn down the wooden villages of the Japanese easily.

Does that justify a strike before an attack, a preventative response? No not in my view. It does in Bush and Cheneys view, they would think that Pearl Harbor committed by the US would be great.

Edward Snowden did something I am grateful for, I hope one day he can come back to the US. In fact I say the next Democratic candidate we require them to sign a promise that they'll give Edward Snowden a full Presidential Pardon.

In no way is this meant to offend you, it's intended as a compliment, but from your previous posts I've come to expect something quite different from you. I'm happy you feel that way. It takes courage to do what he did, which is essentially throwing his future and life down the drain in favor of justice and humanity. I think a lot of us would have done the same, but chance had it that the NSA just happened to employ someone with morals.
Regardless, glad you feel that way. I hope he can be seen as such by the majority of human beings within his life.

Thank you for posting this. Glad I didn't miss it.

It is telling that this is the one issue seemingly everyone on the sift is in agreement on.

Yeah, well, we're likely to see a lot of these "takedowns," until the video spreads far enough on the internet to make it impossible to remove.

I've posted a working embed that's sufficient (for now).

Why can't modern journalists do a half decent job of coming up with good interview questions and asking them properly? This interview was remarkably amateurish and incoherent.

I think there's a good possibility someone might do that as one of their last acts of office.

It only seems amateurish because it's not supposed to be taken seriously. This "exclusive" isn't a big deal since you can go anywhere and find much more in depth interviews, or simply the product of his leaks which is what's really important. I don't really care what Snowden has to say, but NBC news does because that's what they're trying to do.

If you make it about the person, it's easy to turn around, it's easy to dismiss this one guy. If he ever slips up, looks stupid or something whatever he did and the people that support what he did can be ignored easily.

So this is all about a distraction. Act like this "exclusive" is a big fat hairy deal, and only bring up useless everything, nothing of value or substance really.

Let's look at the News websites right now. CNN first.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/28/us/edward-snowden-interview/index.html?iref=allsearch

This about how he sees himself, so it's about ego, do you see yourself as a patriot. The title is immediately meant to draw a line, who agrees who doesn't, read the article with your feelings. Next NBC themselves.

http://www.nbcnews.com/feature/edward-snowden-interview/nsa-officials-snowden-emailed-question-not-concern-n118011

First NSA disputing his claims, people calling him naive and basically presenting no evidence just like the NSA hasn't. Then Kerry and some other guy saying he doesn't have to stay in Russia, that it's not the US's fault for him being there. Completely absurd bullshit, and no one would be allowed to take Snowdens side in these talkbacks. It's useless. On to Fox News

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/05/29/kerry-tells-snowden-to-man-up-and-come-home/

Focussing on Kerry acting like a tough idiot.

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2014/05/29/glenn-greenwald-new-book-no-place-to-hide-tells-how-nsa-spies-on-us/

And a surprisingly decent opinion piece on Glenn Greenwald from Judge Napolitano.

It's called 'programming' for a reason-You are (everyone here who speaks like they have a clue) and have been programmed and your opinions and world-view are a product of years of indoctroinformation disguised as truth, fact, etc.

Trancecoachsays...

Intentionally or not, I think Snowden nails it here as far as why these mass surveillance programs exist:

"or are we trying to throw money at a magic solution..."

The key here being "throw money," not the search for a magic solution. Who stands on the receiving end of the money "thrown?" Identify them and you identify the source and purpose of these programs.

Trancecoachsays...

It will take millions more Snowdens to give freedom a fighting chance in an age of Leviathan State control, but it's also important for any lover of freedom to understand the manner in which Snowden went about his defiance. He acted peacefully, openly, with total dedication to principle. He took responsibility for speaking the truth, and he did it with a clean conscience.
