Driver has no option but to slam at 70 mph into stopped car!

OMG I cant stop the car. I must only steer! I must not use brakes or change my transmission gear into neutral or park or reverse, or turn the keys off! Who knows how much quick thinking we'll each have in a similar situation though. Are you going to run your car into a wall at 10 mph or perhaps think for another moment, I can stop this.

Shoulda just rear-ended the first car, huh?

(or, of course, done any of the numerous other things you could do to stop a runaway car... presumably, they are pretty much entirely fly-by-wire now)

Best yet, don't screw around with automatic transmissions. They encourage lazy, inattentive driving anyways.

Korean story on this: http://www.mhj21.com/sub_read.html?uid=54972§ion=section26§ion2=%EC%82%AC%ED%9A%8C%EC%9D%BC%EB%B0%98 (Chrome translates it, not sure about other browsers).

Seems it was a he as the article says he is asking what is going on. This is a black box recording of the accident on a Hyundai Sonata YF along with a dash cam. It was apparently an older gentleman. I have to guess that it is easy to armchair it in and say shift into N or kill the engine, but if your car suddenly starts accelerating faster than you are pressing the accelerator then panic probably kicks making rational thought go out the door... plus if I don't know about Korea, but at the local BMV, I often see older people given lots of chances to see the flashing light... "...do you see the light now? On the right?" "Oh! Yeah!".

Almost all modern cars these days have rev limiters, which will minimize the potential damage one can do, assuming one properly stops the car and turns off the ignition as soon as safely possible.

Yeah but shift into neutral and you risk it overrevving the engine. . ..... ...

I had this happen a while back - the floor mat slid up and caught the accelerator pedal. The best my panicking brain came up with was to jam it in 5th, dump the clutch, and (thankfully) stall. All the better ideas came to me after I was stopped.

Dying by floor mat...that seems like a shit way to go.>> ^jmzero:

Lulz, thank goodness you weren't driving one of the new Vettes. You can't stall them. They'll start in 6th. Take FOREVER to get to 200mph that way, but they get there.
