I think it was Confucius who said...:
"The 'Oprah' show is a mirror into the soul of America. A confusing, typically unwatchable mirror.
... Oh, and you are a moderately overweight, mid-to-lower class American woman between 28 and 60 years old. ... while, ironically, Oprah is immortal, can take any form of her choosing, and eats diamonds for breakfast."

Getting paid is not the same as buying shit. Lots of shit. I don't know if he is an uber-consumer, however I suspect he doesn't scream in delight over a new sweater. Or twelve.

Just a guess.

Yeeeeeah, Bill Maher has a net worth of $23 million, according to the intertubes.

He could be the greediest consumer of all, but that doesn't make his message any less true.

As usual, consumerism is just something that needs to be moderated. Nothing wrong with wanting nice stuff, but there is a limit.

We've just convinced as whole that we "deserve" it and our perception of what is a luxury and what is a necessity becomes more and more unrealistic

we are not born like this, but it is not an accident that we end up like this... there are plenty and more, who benefit from this behaviour... and they have their ways to keep everything looking dandy, avoiding the "lowlights" of the disadvantages (saying that lightly) that impact and will impact the entire 'human' race...

time for change or?

@bareboards2: While some of the people in the video are obviously going over nuts over not-much (TV, clothes, whatever), there were also people thrilled over a new car or a million dollars. Depending on a person's financial situation, those can be life-changing (including having a car that you don't have to worry about breaking down every thousand miles).

While I don't think he was born into money, my point is that these days Bill Maher, with his $23 million, 1) has probably lost touch with what some extra cash (even if not a million dollars) can mean to a person, and 2) can give the bulk of that to charity and live a pleasantly austere life, if he's anti-stuff.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)

I think there might be something a little wrong with wanting nice stuff. It's that constant craving that KD Lang crooned about.

The best things in life are not things.

Money can't buy you happiness, but the lack of it will make you miserable.

Can I ask how being happy for getting free stuff is ramapant consumerism? @littledragon_79 is totally correct, the Black Friday riots are far more indicative of the illness. Black Friday is all about proving your self worth to others by purchasing things. I mean, even Mother Theresa was ecstatic over winning the Nobel prize's $1,000,000 for no other reason than what it meant to her mission.

Also, looking down on people who DON'T have a $23 million net worth who are happy about getting stuff when YOU DO have a $23 million net worth is elitist bullshit.
