VideoSift = MMORPG

Gameplay: VideoSift gameplay primarily consists of a perpetual grind toward next level. At each level the player is rewarded with new prestige armor, new spells (but you have to pay extra for the mana to cast some of them) and, at some levels, an increased capacity to grind for more levels. Hard work is rewarded with more work.

PvP: VideoSift does not separate PvP from PvE, which can be both exciting and frustrating. You will often find yourself, while happily participating in the PvE game, suddenly challenged to a PvP event. There is no opportunity to decline a PvP challenge and you cannot opt-out via a flag or option. Fortunately the outcome of a PvP challenge generally has no effect on your existing stats, though it can affect your ability to level in the future.

Community: Most of the VideoSift players are fairly helpful and courteous. Even during PvP events, players generally remain respectful even as they paint the landscape with your entrails.

Rules & Mechanics: The rules of VideoSift are prone to change more frequently than most MMORPGs. We're not talking about the ability nerfs/buffs to maintain balance that are common in most games; VideoSift staff will regularly rewrite large portions of the core mechanics. This has the unfortunate side effect of causing confusion for the more casual players.

Administration: Admins are encountered fairly frequently in the game world where they participate just as normal players do. In fact admins are indistinguishable from normal players except through discussion. Admins regularly poll the playerbase before making changes to the rules or game mechanics, but some players feel they do whatever they want despite player feedback.

I blame Ant The largest single inbound source of traffic for VideoSift (besides google) is BluesNews. All of the gamer blood in this community has shaped the culture to be more game like.

To steal the words of a wise person, VideoSift addiction is...

...akin to poker machine addiction, as it uses a similar system of intermittent rewards for behaviour, as first expounded by psychologist BF Skinner. The idea is that if you perform action X you can expect reward Y, and this can be mildly conditioning, or "addictive". However, Skinner discovered that this action-reward link embeds itself more firmly in your brain if the reward doesn't come every time, but more or less randomly, as long as it only comes if you perform the prescribed action.

Thus, a poker machine addict will keep hitting the "play again" button like a trained rat so long as the flashing animations and jangly sounds of a win only occur every now & then.

Actually, I think I discovered VS years ago from Blues News. I wonder just how big Ant's contributions and pimping have been over the years. I might need to offer him up my shoes as the true pimp of VS.

I think the new user registration should ask how you found VS. Of course, one of the options is Blue's News. LOL!

So is SiftBot the overlord that can't be killed?

You forgot about levelling and ranking (I am #7 as I type this!).

Dag: How much traffics/referrers are from Blue's News? Maybe we need a top ten referrers statistics.

Is Blues News anything to do with Blues Clues?

No! When BC first became popular there were often humorous references on Blue's News, though. "Blue" is the screen name of Stephen Heaslip who runs a gaming news aggregation site (bluesnews.com). It's been around since 1996 though it started off as Blue's Quake Rag and originally only covered Quake news.

And now that I wrote that, I see I could have saved myself some time by just writing this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue%27s_News

yup another Blues News guy here. I have read the extra links there every day for the last 8ish years. Took me just a little while longer to make the connection that there was only one Ant and he was the reason I was here.

Also a Blue's'er. Alias is the same, AFCs, formerly Syl-la-ble on Blues. Ever since I came across VS my posting rate on Blues has dramatically slowed down to a trickle; it can get old making fun of Riley. Ah wait, that never gets old now does it? I still lurk and peruse the articles daily though.
