Undo/Change votes?

I remember this was mentioned in the past, but was this ever decided?

I still like to see registered members allow to undo/change votes? I hate doing accident votes. I have seen others. Rarely, I wish I can change my votes because I changed my mind.

I don't think this is necessary, mostly because I think it would be a bitch to program.

Maybe just stop downvoting stuff, the accidental votes are just well accidental... oh well I committed plenty of those myself.

i agree on this becuase i have on several occasions pushed the wrong button. Maybe siftbot could be tweaked to respond to *changevote then you only get a limted amount over a period of time like saves.

I agree with this..though it sounds hard to implement. Have gotten many accidental downvotes on my videos (or at least that's they said . It hurts especially when it's a brand-new post.

BTW: Ant- You downvote way too much (without a comment as to why) and it's frickin annoying. Many others have said this in an indirect way. I'm saying it directly. I have started to go downvote a couple of your queue'd vids when you do this, to blow off steam. Habitually downvoting everyone else's vids without justification is rude.

joedirt says...

Not worth the complexity. So what if 1% of your votes are accidental. It all averages out (though a downvote early on in the queue is a death sentence).

Can you change vote on digg? or slashdot? etc. etc.

My only suggestion might be to add AJAX to downvote button ONLY that brings up a confirmation popup that mentions "only downvote in these situations, Are you Sure?"

rickegee says...

I like the fact that the vote locks in. I can easily foresee a situation where someone doesn't like a comment in a thread and changes upvotes to downvotes in a bout of SiftRage. Besides, usually someone will jump in to correct/negate an errant downvote (although you are still -1 as a result).

And don't knock the antvote too much. I cannot tell you how many times I have used the antvote as a "tell" for a great video. I will watch something that otherwise I would have skipped if I see an antvote.

djsunkid says...

heh, yeah- It's quite bizarre like that- Ant seems to downvote and upvote with no discernable pattern. I don't know that I like every vid that he's downvoted, but I've certainly noticed that he has downvoted some really good ones.

ant says...

Mostly, I downvote these things: Porno-related, weak jokes, boring, bashing on Christians, music types (e.g., rap, heavy metal, etc.) I do not like, etc. Also, I don't have time to document every downvotes. I already spend 2-3 hours a day on this addicting Web site (with filters and only front page videos too). Even if I do put comments, do notice that I do not say much. They're just a few words and that's it.

ant says...

grspec: That will work too, but wouldn't that get annoying since we vote a lot? I still think having edit even if it is a timer would work better. No annoying prompts.

LadyBug says...

i never make mistakes .... so i don't worry about this issue!!! BAH!!! hahahahaha!

personally, i think this is a non-issue ... accidents happen and people have their own voting style! ant has downvoted plenty of my vids ... do i care? not in the slightest ... that's his personal preference. thankfully, we all don't downvote vids we 'do not like' ... because i think we'd have a lot of unhappy people here!

i base my downvotes on things that i just really go against every fiber in my body!

while the confirmation button is a clever alternative ... it's just another thing that we have to click on .... maybe the 'up' * 'down' buttons can just be spaced apart to decrease the 'oops' votes. *shrugs*

rembar says...

I agree with LadyBug, could we have an upvote button on the left side of the title and a downvote button on the right side of the title? Or something of the sort, it would be nice to have a distance between the two.

I base my votes on whether I think I or possibly somebody else could find the video interesting or entertaining. If not, I downvote - which isn't very often.

I personally don't mind being downvoted, so long as I understand the general reasoning behind someone's downvote. It's just frustrating when a downvote seems to be given at random or stupidly.

Farhad2000 says...

Ahem

Am sorry Ant but I take issue with your arguments towards downvoting, while understand you might not like these things you never go out of your way to downvote them even if they are clearly labeled against your preference.

I know you don't like Rap and Hip Hop, but when they are tagged as such no one puts a gun to your head to click on them and check them out and then get pissed and downvote.

Yet you also adopt a hypocritical stance and downvote videos just because you don't understand them. And how would you explain a downvote here?

Am sorry. Not good enough.

joedirt says...

Look, don't worry about others. It isn't worth it, and will average out in the end. If it's good enough for 10 votes, it's good enough for 11. Though early queue voting can be fatal.

Worry about your votes, and don't worry about other. Chronic abuses of downvotes will probably be dealt with (excluding ant). And I'm all for his votes. Heck sometimes I go on a downvoting spree. I like his filtering. Now the site would fall apart with 8 more people like him, but it's good to have different sifting approaches.

And given the titles of your above example, without watching the videos, I would also downvote them all. Maybe you need better titles. And yes, I do vote on vids without watching them.

"I base my downvotes on things that just really go against every fiber in my body!"

That's pretty much my philosophy on down voting too - but each to his/her own. Otherwise if it isn't to my taste I just leave it. I think a vote should stick once it has been placed. If people make a mistake they normally say so in a comment, and most good videos don't get held back by one down vote. However, I do think it's nice when people explain why they down vote a post - preferably in a civilised manner ;-)

Krupo says...

I try to avoid sifting when I'm tired and grumpy as I find myself more prone to downvote at those times... sort of like how sifting while drunk is probabyl not a good idea.... Actually sometime's it's an awesome idea.
