The Channel Depot
I thought it might be valuable to have a list of non-existent channels that new rubies could raid for ideas in case they have no channel ideas of their own, or their channels proposals have already been shot down for one reason or another.
Don't submit channel ideas that you intend to use yourself. The whole point of this list is for them to be taken and used by other people. Here's a handful to prime the pumps. I'll try to update the post with suggestions from the comments as time allows.

Technology
The potential problem with that one is it's already been rejected (twice, I think) for being too similar to #geek.
*breakthrough
For videos displaying a great advancement in technology/genetics/engineering practices etc. etc. Anything that is beyond what we as a civilization know or knew about stuff .
..Im spent, roll over and smoke time.
Maybe a *horrible channel. It could be for horrible events, horrible people, horrible things, etc. Then maybe, just maybe, there would be a tiny chance that people would stop mis-using the *terrible channel (but I really doubt that).

I tend to think we should avoid channels that are too subjective and labeling people horrible is most certainly subjective in almost all cases. Perhaps something like *tragic and leave the O'Reilly bashing to the comments.

What's wrong with old Germany?
Oooooh.
I may as well share with you the other channel idea I had on the back-burner. Admittedly, this may be a bit too narrow...
*irony
If not irony then how about a channel that incorporates all literary devices (and simulacrums thereof like analogy, metaphor, happenstance, coincidence, etc.)?
Or better yet, how about we merely call it irony but include in the description that all literary devices are welcome. Kind of like how *fire also includes explosions.

I read it all, I just don't think the solutions solve the problem.
I'd like to see a *trailers channel. There are a ton of trailers on the sift, and *commercial just doesn't seem like the right home for them.
What about an *excerpt channel?
Dupe wars always seem immanent...this could be a way to show short parts of longer vids without inciting riots over sifts that toe the line.
I'm sure we are all clever enough to avoid making it look like youtube with thousands of repeats.
(This just popped into my head today while pretending to work. I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not to be honest. Maybe it makes it worse, lol.)
I agree, I was mainly just venting as the mis-use of the *terrible channel is a pet peeve of mine.>> ^xxovercastxx:

That doesn't feel like a channel to me. A channel should be determined by the content of the video, not how it compares to something else that's on the sift.
*excerpt seems more like *blocked and *brief
How about *long as a searchable channel?
Sometimes I like to set up my laptop and watch a doc or talk or longer vid while I'm washing the dishes or something. I'd love to be able to search for longer quality vids on the sift.

You can already do that. The option is 3rd from the bottom on the search screen. Also, it's not channel material.
Yeah, you're right. I retract it.

I've been thinking it might be worth having a *godwin channel.
It should include any hyperbolic comparison to a totalitarian dictator (and/or his regime) though, and not narrowly limited to Hitler/Nazi comparisons.
I also think we need a *delusion channel. This would be for the "Obama was born in Kenya", "Vaccinations cause mental retardation", strain of lies. They're not true, but they're not really lies per se -- the people saying them seem to believe they're true, they're just *delusional.
It'd also give rude atheists the chance to slap it on religious videos for added hilarity and hijinx.

A lot of people instantly jump to 'Hitler+Nazis!' in their minds as soon as they hear 'Germany,' and it gets annoying with time. I don't think 'Slavery+Genocide+Imperialism!' everytime I hear 'United States' or 'Britain.' I'm not saying it should be forgotten, but I think that more than one rail-track should lead in and out of the trainstation Germany. 3. *hester mofet
-The videos in this channel all have names which form complete anagrams of words or phrases, especially those involving: murder, carrots, or which (directly or indirectly) poke fun at my impotence.

How about we generalize it more? How about #fallacy? So few people even properly understand Godwin's Law that I'd hate to see it be the namesake of a channel, especially one that covers more than just that.

#lies does actually cover this, despite its title.
Also, I think it would just be used as an insult channel, much in the way #lies usually is.

On a related note: Is there a list of abandoned channels? It not as glamorous as creating a new channel, but taking care of an existing channel might be useful too.

Not me. I grew up on Wolfenstein 3D so I think Hitler+Nazis+Mutants+Zombies when I hear "Germany".
I assume Germany's censorship laws aren't so successful that you've never played Wolfenstein?
@xxovercastxx, I like my suggestions better than yours.
Fallacy wouldn't be the same as godwin. Lies isn't the same as delusion would be. Yes, technically the lies channel's description includes delusions, but I'm a big proponent of making sure channel names and descriptions don't diverge like that.
Lies should be for lies. Terrible should be for anything that's terrible.
IMO, channel descriptions should just be providing a little clarity about which definition of the word you're using. It shouldn't artificially narrow or expand the scope of the channel to include/exclude things that you would normally associate with the channel's name. Most channels do in fact work that way, and the ones that don't can be rather annoying.

I agree but then you're the one who just suggested *godwin should "include any hyperbolic comparison to a totalitarian dictator (and/or his regime) though, and not narrowly limited to Hitler/Nazi comparisons."
I'll add godwin to the main list, too. I'm going to leave fallacy as well, though, since I think that could be a decent channel.

Touche. I guess I tend to think that the whole use of Godwin's law as an internet meme isn't quite so narrowly or rigidly defined.
Seems a shame to let people making inappropriate Stalin/Soviet Union comparisons off the hook though. "Guilt by association fallacy channel" just doesn't have the same ring.
Should the list at the top not have each channel suggestion begin with a capitol letter ?
Seriously its a question.

Godwin's Law is of very specific, narrow scope and is often referenced in situations where it doesn't technically apply. Almost any video will be exempt from Godwin's Law because the law only applies to internet discussions. The only exception I can think of would be a situation where, say, two youtubers were arguing back and forth via video and one of them invoked Nazis.
So on one hand, I think there's something to your idea of having a channel dedicated to Reductio ad Hitlerum-style arguments and statements. But on the other hand, even though "Godwin" is a compact and catchy name for it, it probably can't ever be accurate.
>> ^BoneRemake:

Not until they receive proper channel status. For now they are informal suggestions and, thus, are unworthy of being dignified with a capital letter.
