NSFW thumbnail censoring

In light of the recent debate and general situation going on around here, it seems like an appropriate time to re-suggest that there be some way to censor NSFW thumbnails when logged in. I was thinking of bringing this up again yesterday before @bareboards2 started the trolling post (http://horrorshow.videosift.com/talk/I-m-not-enjoying-the-trolling-on-the-Sift) since I work in an environment where I could get in serious trouble if the wrong person come in and sees inappropriate (for work) content on my screen (ie the promoted topless jousting video yesterday). I know the obvious solution is to avoid the sift while at work, but I usually don't need to. Similarly, having the option to block NSFW thumbs according to preference would also alleviate some problems the ladies have with seeing "sexist" thumbs. Is this a possibility @dag or @lucky760?

I don't feel it's worth the effort to build support for a whole new filter preference to just hide NSFW thumbnails when one already exists to just hide NSFW posts altogether. I think the best solution is that while you're at work you modify your Filter Prefs to hide NSFW videos.

but.. but then I'd have to change it every morning and every evening. I like the idea where you do more work and I do less work better...

Why not just change the image of the thumbnail so someone walking by won't be upset? I want to be able to see NSFW videos, but it would be nice if the thumbnails are SFW.

Then you don't have to do this little dance of changing preferences depending on time of day.

residue says...

The problem with that is twofold:
A: I don't want to restrict anyone's right to advertise their video however they like.
B: You run into the problem of just sort of hoping people adhere to unofficial guidelines. To actually enforce a rule like "no NSFW thumbnails" there has to be some sort of repercussion for disobeying the rule, which I don't like.

I think people should be able to post whatever they like and let the community decide if it should be visible to the general populous, I just also feel like it would be appropriate to give people an option to filter such content out according to preference without being completely oblivious to it.

Completely disagree. Since NSFW can mean anything from someone saying "shit" to something gwiz would submit, the thumb is a good indication of what kind of NSFW content the video actually contains.

How many times in the history of the sift has the thumbnail itself been NSFW? Maybe a handful of times? In the rare, rare case that you see a boobie or a wiener or some other NSFW bit of skin in a thumbnail, just scroll past it. The thumbnails aren't exactly huge -- unless your boss or a coworker is standing right over your shoulder while you browse the sift (in which case it's your own fault if you get caught looking at something inappropriate), no one will notice.

residue says...

Well the issue was that a couple days ago someone promoted the topless joust video so everytime you loaded the page, there was the topless thumbnail proudly displayed right at the top. That was an issue for me and I had to completely avoid the sift for the day at work (not a big deal, but a resolvable problem for that and future situations). There are lots of times at work when I want to show a colleague something that's on the sift and you're right, most of the time it's perfectly fine. What I'd like to create a situations where it's ALWAYS fine.

If it's a huge amount of work, which lucky has alluded to, then you're right it's not worth it. Just a suggestion

I believe it works like this.

1. logout and all NSFW videos have the NSFW thumbs.
2. Change your prefs to hide NSFW videos and none show.

Both are great solutions for anyone coming to the Sift at work.

bareboards2 says...

You can also pull a vid into discuss so the thumbnail disappears from general view and it can be changed.

http://videosift.com/video/Topless-Chair-Jousting-New-Olympic-Sport-for-2012

Here is the vid mentioned above -- the poster was happy to change the thumbnail when asked politely (unfortunately he subsequently killed the vid -- the vid was drawn into a controversy and the poster wanted OUT of that noise. Can't blame him.)

The original thumbnail was a perfect bewb shot -- torso only. It was clearly a naked woman even if you were 20 feet away. Other than its obvious allure, it was also boring and static and story-free.

The new thumbnail is so much more enticing, I think. There is even side bewb. Side bewb is good, right? It would draw in the same crowd as would have been intrigued by the original thumbnail, without causing folks at work to do some convoluted dance and have to remember to change their settings back and forth, and log in and out.

I don't think we need to do anything other than use an existing tool -- discuss -- and the community will sort it out. Doesn't need programming, doesn't need Sifters tying themselves up into pretzels to save the sensibilities of some of the touchier people around here. That would be you, @blankfist. Toughen up, honey. It's just a thumbnail.

residue says...

That's actually an interesting point.. Why would thumbnails be censored for people who aren't even registered, yet active members don't have the same luxury?

The problem with hiding all NSFW videos is then you lose everything that's flagged for language

It sounds like the best solution for me is to actually stay logged out at work. thanks for the info, I didn't realize it was set up that way since I'm never logged out..

again, @bareboards2 the problem with having the thumb issue resolved by "communal responsibility" is that some people may want to keep a nude thumbnail and IMO have a right to regardless of requests from other members. The entire situation you described with the jousting video (controversy, video killing) could have been potentially avoided had members likely to take offense at such things been using a filter to remove the thumb

In your opinion. In my opinion. In somebody else's opinion.

The community will sort it out. We have a tool for dealing with perceived problems. We have lots of brainpower (and time to waste) -- we don't need software to deal with this.

In my opinion.

blankfist says...

Yeah, not something we need to invoke a discussion over every time someone uses a naughty thumb. Discuss should be used sparingly, because it pulls another user's video out of rotation. Temperance. Discrimination.

residue says...

I don't see that having much of an effect... and I don't even like the way it sounds.. kind of wet blanket feeling...

I really do want to reiterate that I have no problem at all with people advertising their videos with nudity, I think it's great. I just don't want it unexpectedly showing up while I'm at work, showing mom a cat video, etc. I just thought it would be nice for people to have the option, especially since it's the precedent when not logged in.. If it's a big hassle though, no big deal! I'll just block all NSFW content and catch the missed language stuff elsewhere

>> ^dag:

We could enshrine in the guidelines a request that people try and use SFW thumbs for the sake of work sifting members.

residue says...

ok, actually here's an example. Let's say I've been saving powerpoints for a few months and now I've got 10 to burn. Maybe I'm felling a bit froggy and I decide to promote 10 videos with nude thumbnails. Now the entire videosift community has to scoll through 10 nude photos before you see any new content. While this is a bit extreme, it's entirely possible and entirely "legal" under current guidelines. I don't think the guidelines themselves should be changed for reasons already stated, so a toggle to hide NSFW thumbs seems like an elegant solution

An equally useful alternate solution would be as ant said to have separate tags each with its own filter. I vaguely remember a supportive poll a while ago about this. Definitely another goos solutionm but also one I initially envisioned as being more complicated.

bareboards2 says...

This is a silly conversation. There just aren't that many NSFW thumbnails, as @Sarzy said.

The jousting vid is a perfect example of how "discuss" works just fine. That stingray wanted to stay out of a perceived controversy, that was up to him. We had some private conversations and it was clear to me he was just fine with how it played out. It was just a vid to him, something fun, and he chose to kill it.

Just use common sense. The community will sort it out.

I understand that there is some fear that the politically correct police will make life miserable. But really -- apply some common sense. If someone is really touchy and is constantly drawing vids out of rotation because of a perceived NSFW, the community will make it clear that that person should hide the thumbnails and leave everyone's vids alone. The sift is really really REALLY good at shaming, blaming and making an individual's life hell, especially a sensitive individual. They will stop. Or leave the Sift.

The other side of that is someone who consciously and constantly posts vids that he (believe me, it would be a he) knows cross the line. Same thing will happen -- although wouldn't that person chance being banned for pornography, if it was a constant barrage?

Anyway, residue posted this question and has solved it for himself.

Personally, I plan on using the "discuss" tactic -- sparingly, sparingly, don't worry, I have no interest in censorship, just common sense.

Because ya'll can't censor me from my free speech.

ant says...

We do need a way to not show nudity in thumbnails especially at public places like office/work. I saw that breast/b00b ones and was not happy about it during my late hour lunch break.

I think we need two different NSFW types: Nudity/Sexual and Cussing?

gwiz665 says...

Discuss is a "big thing" to do, since, as blankfist says, it takes the video out of rotation and out of the eyes of most viewers.

If we really want to cater to work-sifters, then have a *nsfwthumb invocation that changes the thumb to a default nsfw one, like people not logged in see.
