Midterm mania: I voted today...so much for that

Well Election Day is finally here.

I live in Wyoming, and as far as states go they don't get much redder than mine. So basically my vote for Democratic candidates is an exercise in futility. However, Republicans don't win every single office in the state. Teton County, Wyoming (the Jackson Hole area) votes Democrat quite consistently, but that isn't where I live. In Casper, WY, the only Democratic candidates that get elected here are DINOs. So my votes that are actually successful still go to God-fearing, states-rights Democrats. And the state's outgoing Democratic governor is conservative on most issues.

So why do I even bother? I have only one reason to vote: I keep hoping that Republicans will win by smaller and smaller margins, enough so that it will encourage good Democratic candidates to throw their hats into the ring in the next election cycle.

Okay, enough about Wyoming politics. At the national level I despair for the country, because Republicans will not hesitate to screw the little guy in any way they can when the win control of one or both houses, and they will do all they can to protect their wealthy, corporate masters. You know they will try extend the upper class tax cut, yet they won't help the unemployed. In general I've been disappointed with Obama's job performance so far, but I know things would be far worse if we had elected McCain and given the Republicans control of either or both houses in 2008.

So what do you think? And what's going on in your state, county, or city this election day? Unload. It may not help, but it couldn't hurt. I think.

I voted Libertarian in California. Yeah, that's not going to pan out.

There was only one place where it was only Republican vs. Democrat, and I almost left it blank. Almost. I voted Republican and sold my soul to the devil. Why? Because I remember. I remember how awesome it is to have a Republican majority so we can all hate them together. Democratic majorities divides the Sift. We need solidarity, dammit! That, and I thought of @NetRunner and wanted to make things fun for him.

I voted NO (yes that's an option) on all Supreme Justices. Why? I have no idea. I really suck at this whole voting thing.

But I voted YES on prop 19, and that's really the important one here, isn't it? I'm ready to smoke some weed in front of some cops!

^I ain't the forgivin' type.

As I write this it looks like Repubs will take control of the House and the Dems will retain control of the Senate. So you won't be able to have your wish fulfilled in its entirety, @blankfist, because now we'll only be able to loathe one legislative chamber. We'll all probably become manic-depressive because of it, so make sure to take your lithium.

But let's try to be positive. Let it comfort you to know that in 2012 we'll have another crop of losers to vote for. Feel better?

I feel your pain Krono, I live in Texas and any of my votes outside of my district are pretty much for naught. I highly suspect come 2012 there'll be another reversal once people see these tea-party libertarians they elected are really ultra bat-shit conservatives who'll push for higher defense spending, gay burning, and required jesus.

I'm pretty sure - 100% actually - tea partiers are not libertarians. When did this rumor start? Because I've been hearing it a lot from the Democrats.

@kronosposeidon and @Crosswords, you guys make me feel thankful for living in Ohio. Things didn't go well here for team blue yesterday, but at least this state still has some swing to it, and I can expect big Democratic organizations to make a play here every single time there's an election.

Interesting. I've heard this a lot recently. But libertarians are for pure equality, civil rights and open borders and much of the things the typical conservative dislikes. Libertarians and conservatives only agree on limiting government and shrinking taxes, but even then it seems to be conservative rhetoric. Last time I checked spending trillions on the military industrial complex and creating bureaucratic agencies (i.e., Homeland Security) wasn't limiting the power of government.

Yeah, and I have tea party family members, too, but they dare not call themselves libertarian around me lest they hear an earful of my bullshit for an hour.

If memory serves correctly the original tea-party movement was primarily a libertarian movement, however it was quickly subverted and taken over by the ultra conservatives. Basically so they could scream bloody murder over the economy, the bailout, and the democrats without the taint of being a rank and file republican. Or to put it another way, its a different puppet but with the same hand up its ass.

Republicans love to prop-up libertarian ideals when its convenient, its just inconvenient to actually be because then they'd have to cut defense spending, bloated contracts to private sector, and respect the separation of church and state.

There is a certain amount of truth to that. I must admit. I felt a little bad tearing into some of half-bright conservatives on this site while the dems held the executive and legislative branches of government. But now that the conservatives have the judicial branch and half the lege, the kid gloves come off. Let the disembowelings begin!
