How about something new?

People mostly sift politics and news videos that reaffirm positions they already have. It's fine to express your opinion, even via someone else's words, but it feels like 90+% of the top videos since the 2008 election campaign started have fallen into this category.

I get it, really. Bush was wrong and Obama is right. The Republicans are idiots and the Democrats are saviors. Fox News couldn't find their way out of a paper bag (because paper bags are all recycled now and recycling is part of the Muslim, Marxist, Liberal Hippie agenda).

You've all made your point, now can't we get some videos that teach/show us something new? Maybe ease off the frivolous news for a while? I could go back to watching TV at this rate.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

^That's a pretty important idea about the internet- We don't have to passively be pumped stuff we don't want to watch- it's up to you to customise VideoSift the way you want it, by excluding channels. If enough people exclude politics- then they won't be garnering as much votes as other types of content. (I like politics though)

I feel pretty good about not posting politics myself, but then I'm not as interested in it as others.

Channels can be surfed too, that doesn't mean the rest of us have to be stifled in what we post. If you don't like it, don't watch it.

I like politics, too - but I hate the MSM's reporting on it. If we could hide individual videos it'd be a lot easier to filter out the things you don't want, without filtering out a whole ton of other stuff (that might be enjoyable) in the process.

I know I would fall into that category of sifting things of my ideology in that I sift things I enjoy watching. I try to keep an open mind towards different views and ideas out there. But if I don't want to watch certain videos then I find the handiest feature is to scroll past them with my mouse.

I'm not a big politics guy myself, but for some reason, I like watching people look silly and make a fool of themselves which is what a lot of politicians and reporters reporting on politicians do.
They seem so split between what they believe and what the party tells them to believe that they trip on their own tongues repeatedly.

That being said, what I like even better are the spontaneous stuff that wasn't meant to be funny but came across so corny or mixed up in translation, that it it just makes you flat out choke on your "Beverage of Choice." There just doesn't seem to be enough of this stuff around...

.. I refuse to block anyone or anything - just my stance!

It's not a matter of not wanting to see any news or politics, I'm just challenging people to try something different. The Sift feels stagnant. How many of the "news" clips are even newsworthy? Most of them are about the never ending bickering that goes on between news organizations rather than the news itself.

I just think it would be nice to learn something new or be informed by these videos a little more often.

I'm not particularly interested in blocking channels because, like I said, it's not like I don't want to see any news or politics. The only channel I'd even consider blocking is #terrible and I can't because it's so misused that I'd end up effectively blocking half the channels on the site.

I think I understand what you're saying...but, if you see a void of informative videos why not fill it by posting what's missing. For me I wouldn't block anything.

The problem is that the sift has gathered momentum on pro-obama, pro-liberal, anti-fox, anti-religion and so on. The barrier-to-entry for dissenting viewpoints is too great, because of the way voting works. It's really a vicious cycle, because the big liberal base draws more like-minded people to the site, making it even harder for dissenting viewpoints to be heard and said.

Overcast, you seem to be "divorced from reality" as Karl Rove's male prostitute once said. We haven't been excited about Obama for months and no one likes the democratic party. FOXNews is a news maker, they do something unprecedented and profoundly newsworthy almost weekly.

Which is pretty much the point. As a new sifter, I've tried to contribute sifts on art and science and music...but the only thing that gets votes seems to be pop-news items and politics. So the videosift community pretty much determines which types of videos they want and a successful sifter provides it. I still try to sift the other stuff but it just falls off the page right away. You can't dictate to people what they want.

Sounds like capitalism.
