Emoji Shortcodes Now Available
As mentioned here, I thought it'd be great to support Slack-style emoji shortcodes.
This has been implemented and is now available.
Just use a colon followed by a shortcode followed by another colon, for example: 👍
As @newtboy requested, there is a 🤦 emoji and thousands of others, and as @ant requested, they are rendered as simple standard emoji characters.
😁
If you hover over an emoji, you'll see the shortcode text that was used to create it.
Update:
The full list of emojis is available on the following page. Click the emojis you want and then copy them all to your clipboard by clicking the 📋 in the bottom-right corner, then just paste away!

Just realized this is enabled in comments, but not in post descriptions. 😮
I'll get that resolved straight away. 😊
Cool, but where's the list of emojis to type in/copy and paste? Or am I blind?
No, you're not blind. You're right it should be included somewhere somehow, but it's a standard by Unicode. Here's a full list:
https://unicode.org/emoji/charts/full-emoji-list.html
You'd basically just use the shortcode, replacing any underscores or spaces with a hyphen.

Unfortunately it looks like there are some slight variations between the list we're using and the list at ^that page, but they're pretty close.

If there are any differences you'd like us to account for, let me know and I'll update.
For example, there is not actually a
facepalm
🤦 built in, so I added it as an alias forface-palm
🤦. And there are also gender-specific versions in the standard:🤦♀️ 🤦♂️
I agree with you @eric3579 and @ant that they're pretty small. I'll work on making them render larger. The only problem is that'll make any line of text with an emoji push the neighboring lines so there'll be ugly spacing in blocks of text, which is the reason our old-fashioned smilies are tiny (so as to fit comfortably with text).
Okay, they are now 1.5x as large as they were. Hopefully that helps!
Okay all post descriptions should now be properly emojified.
🤞

Please add a link for each post so we can click to view and use! :U+1F600: However, it's not working for me?

*quality

You know what, I'll add a page that just lists all the emojis. I can't include the list on every page because it's just too massive.
It's not working because you're using the ugly old literal character codes.
Don't use those, use the human-friendly shortcode text, so not :U+1F600: but :grinning: - does that help clarify it?

Yes please. We can't remember all that. Also, it will help newbies like me!
:grinning face with big eyes: (Why can't I put the specific grin?)
😀 (worked)

Yes it helped. I can now see them even on my tablet. Thanks

*quality upgrade, thanks @lucky760

And my old compound eyes. :face with monocle: :face (both failed)

Awesome @newtboy! Thanks!
@ant - This should help:
https://videosift.com/emojis
You can browse the entire list of emojis and you can even click the ones you want and have them copied to your clipboard.
The list is really long, so it'd be better if we could organize them by category... alas, I've already spent a ton of time on this, so unless someone else wants to help me with that, it'll probably remain a nice-to-have. 😃
🤪 😬
🧐 you forgot to hyphenate.
Edit, also don't capitalize.
And my old compound eyes. :face with monocle: :face (both failed)
I found this site that is organized fairly well and searchable....

Thanks! The baby emoji is "innocently adorable." 👶
Just what I needed.

🧐🐜👍
Is it me or is https://videosift.com/emojis showing its :flag... text letters and not actual graphics? Also, the emojis are too small there too. Please make them a little bigger like in the talks. I see them in both SeaMonkey v2.53.3 and Firefox v78 web browsers in my decade old, updated 64-bit W7 HPE SP1 PC.
The emojis on that page have been bumped up. 👍

Thanks, but what about the missing flag graphics?

I don't know why they're rendering that way.
According to the table at unicode.org that I linked before, they render as flags in other devices and/or browsers...
🤷
