Collectives and email

I'm finding the email from collectives to be pretty annoying. I have too many sources of email, and didn't realize that joining a collective (groovy man, groovy) would generate more. Is it possible to turn this off?

Also, question for Dag, what are the intended/unintended consequences of collectives? Isn't it possible that the email, and a 'tribe' of voters will strongly favor that collectives posts above all others? This would reinforce/magnify existing power laws. I'm thinking along the lines of The Corporation..the corporation (or 'collective') serves its own goals. If two collectives get into competition, they could have their members voting their posts onto the front page. It's not all that different from self-promotion in a sense.

Hi Winkler, you can turn off Collective emails via your profile.

As for the consequences - I think that you can look at it in a negative way, or a positive way. I hope that the consequence will be that they allow members who have particular interests to more easily find the videos that they like.

A little friendly competition is fun, and I'm pretty sure it won't move beyond that.

Thanks. My eye skipped over that link because it wasn't clustered with others, and 'hid' in smaller text. I seriously spent about 90 seconds methodically looking for it..duh

I try to follow the Rule of least astonishment when designing software. The email was a suprise. Alternately, maybe have a checkbox (default off, text "Email about new posts") at the time you join. That makes the behavior clear and puts the user in control.

Instead of emails for invitations, one could simply post a comment at a member's profile saying he/she's invited. The only email notification is to the founder whether or not it was accepted or declined.

The founder gets the email, and no members feel spammed.

Some members interested in the collectives would naturally run across their invitation. In case a founder wishes to invite someone that's not expecting it...again, the founder could leave a message in their profile page.

Off by default. ALSO, I know lucky already coded things one way, but why can't the invites to join be sent as private profile messages????

That seems to make more sense than sending out emails.

i vote 'off' by default as well ... although i have a spam account just for VS and only check it about once every two weeks ... so it's really had no effect on me.

i like joe's idea as well ... based on my own email habits, i wonder if others have the same sort of set up and might not have seen my invite *shrugs* ... private profile invite seems the most noticeable way to go!

In the name of competiveness, I think there should be a cap on how many collectives you can join. I dunno that it actually matters, since you can only submit X videos per week. But it would discourage joining EVERY collective. Maybe 10 or something? Just a thought.

*sigh*, I don't know Joe, I really would hate to see actual competition between the collectives come about. I would actually prefer it if it went the other way, and collectives didn't have to be invitation-only and were just open to anyone interested...

...maybe I'd prefer Hippy Communes to Collectives.

I think membership in collectives should be a lil' restricted. I would rather see a few people focus on particular sifts in their respective collectives.

The fact that only Gold's can start a collective is a good thing. However I would want the limit to increase gradually as more users hover at the Gold Star level.

There is no point if collectives increase to an absurd point. Maybe even a cap for creation should be created. I see the possibility of alot of collectives arising overlapping.

And Rembar is a hippy so we should simply ignore him

That's how it was intended to be at first, but the reason not everyone checks their profile very often. I personally never look at mine. So we considered if Siftbot should post a profile comment and also email a notification of the new profile comment. That wouldn't make much sense, so we cut out the middleman and now send the body of the message directly via email. Besides, a member will only receive so many collective invitations, so the emails shouldn't be inundating.

As for the collective emails in general, we are going to reset collective email preferences to off for all members. If anyone wants to receive any collective emails, you will have to reset it. (The emails really have been a bit more than anticipated.)

i have to agree with farhad on capping the number of collectives ... well, i don't HAVE to agree with him, but i do ...

what if someone starts a Kittens Only ... or ... Dogs Only collective?? where does that leave swampgirl?? or if someone starts a Vintage or Relics collective? where does that leave rick?? what about a One Hit Wonders collective and then dag's?!?!?!

and having a set number of members also makes it a bit more interesting ... what's to stop someone from inviting virtually every member that ever comes across the sift??

*random thoughts from a tipsy girl*

I am personally hoping for all those what-ifs to happen. That'll be some real competition because people will by vying for members and for every one of their related videos. That'd be fun.

I don't see a need for a limit. If you've achieved Gold Star status, it's your right to create a collective on whatever topic you like.

I would hate to see sifters focusing on posting videos to fit a specific collective, opposed to posting the best videos. It seems like theres quite a bit of focus on ranking everything and everyone. Whats the difference between collectives and playlists? Just my thoughts and not intended to offend.
