Should Videosift get a discussion forum?

My gut feeling is that the sift would be a bit more stickier if there was a conventional threaded discussion board. Channel Talks have posts that tend to, more often than not, die a death and get few responses.

With a proper hub for intelligent discussion, Channel Talks can still be used to bring up Channel problems/administration issues. Or perhaps dispensed with altogether.

I know some great conversations actually happen in video comments but they are dependent on the submittal of that video. A forum would be a great place to thrash out hot topics or talk about lighter subjects.

How about another way to view Sift Talk, that is simply a table with the following columns...

Topic Title - Channel(s) - Author - Last comment date/time.

Promoted items could still be put at the top, everything else in date/time order. It would give the impression of a forum, so might encourage that level of participation...

That's a good point. If the discussion pages were really unusable for discussions, you probably would have said "Hey, follow me on twitter to discuss", or some other forum... but I haven't really noticed a problem here.>> ^Deano:

So you're posting to the sift's discussion forum, asking about adding a discussion forum?

How else would one do it? I could tweet but I doubt you're all following me

I catch public transport, usually a combination of bus, tram or train, and shanks' pony. It's a bit over an hour each way, but at least I get to read a book (which would be a bit dangerous when driving).

One upside I can see of something like this may be the fact we might be able to have more than ONE poll at a time. I want to know how far people drive to work everyday round trip, but nooOOooOo

I'm sorry, @Deano. I really don't get it.

Sift Talk is a threaded discussion board--as far as I understand the phrase.

What topics do you see on the new one?
We have sift talk, we have blogs, we have channels--what else do we need?

Yea lets stretch the code-master even more !
I will add that I extremely hate those forums, like the ones reddit uses, click on each reply. Blah

Huh? Click on each reply? I don't have to do that unless their scores are lower than zero.

Really it's what I'd call flat (as in the opposite to threaded) since replies get added to the bottom of the page and not lumped together. In a threaded system the replies get grouped with their parents... which can easily end up as a horrible mess, have a look at slashdot for example.>> ^Boise_Lib:

I'd be in favor of a much better organized discussion forum than what we currently have. As is most of the discussion only occurs on current topics on sift-talk's front page or newest channel talks. Most dedicated discussion boards are setup with multiple categories and sub categories, and make it easy to see which topics are most active without crowding out older less active topics.

I think the base method we have for discussions topics is fine, great actually, however I don't think topics are organized in a manner that is conducive to discussion in anything but the most current topics.
