Proposed New "Learning" Channel -- What the "Education" Channel Isn't

Considering how much the educational world has taken to Internet video, I'm proposing a "Learning" channel where Sift nerds like me can come and get our fix.

This channel will include all content designed to teach viewers something. This channel is different from the *Education channel in that regard: Education is for videos about education/pedagogy as a field itself, and specifically not for videos with educational content. This channel will attract people who want to learn.

It will include videos from Vi Hart, MinutePhysics, ASAPScience, SmarterEveryDay, Alex Dainis, NdGT, Nova and all Brady Haran's amazing educational channels, many of which I've sifted myself.

It will not include anything about education as a topic, nor videos taken in classrooms, on campuses etc.

What do you think?

I think this may be a good idea, and may just make Education easier to manage. It's been a challenge to keep these types of posts out of Education.

While these types of videos may seem like they should be parked in Education, they aren't what this Channel was created for. They are a genre all their own.

These are subjects that are much harder to moderate than I thought from the start. (I think I remove more than 50% of the posts from the Education channel.) We should be careful how we move forward with this. I agree we need some Channel to highlight these genres, let's just pick our naming conventions wisely.

Though I must note that there is still a grey line between the types of videos this new channel is aimed at (as is Education) and "the rest" of the stuff that people seem to declare as educational. (Oooo, a news story about the Middle East, I feel like I learned something - Plop, into Education/Learning it goes...). This is a Channel area that is very easily misinterpreted.

In fact, Maybe with the addition of a channel such as "Learning", perhaps the Education channel should be renamed to "Classroom" or "Teachers" or something to help declare the difference between the two channel concepts.

@dag may want to be in this discussion.

@Sagemind, Agreed on all counts. Education will receive fewer incorrect submissions, but both will continue to require some managing.

I'm thinking of *Pedagogy as a clearer name for Education. Other names don't capture what the word "Education" does because it includes theories of learning which are abstracted from teachers/teaching/classrooms etc.

I didn't specify above, but I'm pretty clear on line between the types of things I want the Learning channel to include and not: a video where the intent of the creator was clearly or presumably education. For the channels in the description above, that's obvious and easy.

Things that are out: normal *news broadcasts/exposé journalism; crazy/interesting/neat-thing-happened (*wtf,*comedy); people learning the hard way (*EIA,*fail,*fear);

An edge case that I might allow are things like http://videosift.com/video/Why-You-Should-NEVER-Pump-Iron-Alone, where could reasonably guess it was published not for any wow factor (nobody laughs at him on camera or comes off looking victorious), but to educate others about what can happen if you're not careful (and it was clearly sifted with that intent). This is different from http://videosift.com/video/Jumping-into-a-frozen-pool-What-could-go-wrong where the intent is clearly comedy/fail.

@dag, Ba-dum ching.

After you create the channel and are looking for submitted videos to add to it, you might want to have a look through the brain channel. All of the videos there are supposed to be educational in some way or another, though I have to admit I haven't been nearly as attentive to removing videos that don't belong as I used to be.

Much of this overlaps with Talks as well, as most that would be in learning would also be in Talks. They do have different edge cases though, so I'm cool with it.
