Does the silence mean a desire to return to the old system?

I happen to like it just fine. One can certainly tell which vids have been promoted, and it is easy to move to the next vid.

I wonder what folks don't like about it. Am I missing something?

Well... a lot of suggestions have been given in previous sift talk posts about the new promote system.

I've noted my issues with it there, and even suggested an alternative system to address those issues.

At the end of the day, this new promote system remains a heated topic for a lot of people. Ask them if they like it and the majority will come back with "I hate it." So I thought, maybe it was just because it was new and different? Maybe that's why I didn't like it? So I decided to sit back and try and get used to it. Well... I haven't. So I created this poll now that its had a good incubation period to see if others have changed their view on it at all. Let's see.

If there is more than one promoted video now, the others get hidden. The "next video" link is basically invisible, especially for users not familiar with the site.

And it's tenfolds better than status quo, imo.

My beefs with the new promote set-up include, time spent in and amount of promoted videos available to watch and the lack of a handy "RECENTLY PROMOTED" tab all it's own. I like to rifle through promotes, beggar's chasm, and deadpool, in that order when I log in and begin flagrantly slinging votes around for reasons non-linear.

I kinna dig Hybrids mock-up but the teensy tile gallery is too teensy...A "recently promoted" tab can make that all go away. Maybe let them stay in the recently promoted area a bit longer?? Users from such varied time zones here get shafted when somethings promoted while frequent users are sleeping.

I'm behind these two suggestions. I'm in my OWN timezone [Holy sunscreen ... I'd be a day person if I moved down under!]

i have grown used to it but do not care for it. i do like @Hybrid concept a lot. it is basically what i would have suggested.

Hybrid's thumbnail idea is okay, but I'm with whoever said the thumbnails are way too small. And I wonder if a casual user of the site will understand that they need to click on them to see more.

The only thing I would do to improve the current system is to make the "next featured video" link be much much bigger. And maybe in a box of it's own to catch the eye.

I wonder if there are any stats on how often the "next featured" link gets used? Of course, there are way less promoted vids these days, so the stats might be misleading.

If you don't understand clicking thumbnails, then you have no business being online.
But guys, please understand that @Hybrid's mockup was just that. A mockup. If the thumbnail size is all you have to complain about, I'd call that a success. And all those things can be changed. Very easily.

That mock up looks great. Could it be made to cycle on a 10 second interval?

So far, 22 users who could do give a fuck have voted, out of those 22 I'm guessing 10 actually give a fuck, 8 voted out of genuine, fucking respect for community, 3 voted who may give a reasonable fuck, aaaand one voted in hopes to drive both the creator and code-monkey incurably insane.

I'm not voting for any of those options.

Instead I wonder if there's mileage in rethinking the site navigation. Because putting promoted videos at the top of other videos seems a bit awkward if you think about it. And from there we have differing design options that seem to satisfy no one.

For a site concerned mainly about the viewing and sharing of quality videos I just feel this isn't quite right. The VIDEOS bit is what needs emphasis.
If reorganised you could provide an obvious entry point for promoted videos and other video content.

Let's look at what we could do.

Videos. We need all of these, somewhere. Random could go into in the footer. Dead pool and Thumbnails Wanted will need reassigning.

Channels. Who clicks on this? Is it a huge number? Dunno. But it is video-related so let's keep it, I think we'll have space.

Comments, Users and Sift Talk Forum could be combined into one Community link and moved to the right. I certainly don't feel Users deserves it's own space up there.

My Videosift should really be combined with the username on the right. So I'll see Deano and there's a dropdown navigation from that showing the contents of My Videosift.


REVAMPED MAIN NAVIGATION

Let's get to the point;

NEW - UPCOMING - PROMOTED - TOP - CHANNELS - COMMUNITY

All of these are fairly obvious. Community includes the above plus Dead Pool and Thumbnails wanted.

PROMOTED - click here and a nice list of promoted videos gets displayed, interfering with nothing else. Yes you have to click the link but it's a major navigation link.

Not good enough? How about swap PROMOTED with NEW? It becomes the default page of Videosift and we like that because our wonderful users promote great or under appreciated videos. All visitors will like this, rather than the current compromise. And you see ALL the promoted videos.

There are a few things to tidy up here but I quite like it. I know it's unlikely to happen but just wanted to articulate something different.

Voting for this poll ended in a tie between I don't like it, but I've gotten used to it. and I don't like it..

I don't know about that @Hybrid. Maybe they are shell shocked and war weary.

Damn it. I missed it. I'm OK with it.

I still think a fancy steam top box would be far better. I also think the way old system was better than what we have now.

The system we have now, is better than the ad-box we had before though.

I suspect the reason why @dag and @lucky760 aren't commenting on this, is because either:

a) They want this issue to quietly go away.
b) They are working on a new promote system.

Hello I am here. No intentional avoidance. I have dropped in a couple of times to read the comments. This is something we will address though not super soon. We may make some changes as part of a 5.1 release.
