Just kidding, I'm just using the poll name to fit the sensationalist type of poll that we had last week. After being a member of this site for 3 years I have noticed that occasionally one would "bend" the rules if something posted didn't exactly fit site guidelines but involved a notable site member.

Alas, this last poll was not the case. I can only incur that after years of "bending" the rules and pushing the limits of what's postable, the site is straying from a certain level of quality that I have become acquainted with. I myself have also pushed the limits of posting "questionable" videos, but my tenacity in doing so is only motivated by my desire to show videos that I believe are of worth. Admittedly not all the videos I post are of quality, but there are a few gems that I believe belong that don't see a light of day because they don't fit the average sifter's attention span.

I for one, enjoy the level of quality that the Sift brings, and come here for that reason.

My poll question is this: Do you think that sensationalist videos and topics such as the Jon Stewart poll belong in the Sift Talk or am I completely out of line here?

Channel-specific polls make sense.

I probably contributed to the perceived drop in quality. I'm not a physicist, not a filmmaker, not a philosopher, not an artist, not a psychologist, not a musician, not anything. Just plain old me.

This is bullshit. I don't even remember who made the poll about the Jon Stewart beard thing - yes it was fluffy - VideoSift related - borderline, due to the number of DailyShow videos and their long history on the Sift.

You guys are worse than my kids - there was no intent to "play favourites" or "bend the rules" for "prominent members". I will discard this poll after a suitable period for outrage to play out.

Edit: ah yes, it was you Throbbin - you little scallywag! Don't let these guys get you down - big Daddy's got your back.

Throbbin says...

So....maybe channel-specific polls ARE a good idea?

I'm not sure what "big Daddy's got your back" means. But don't worry, I won't let them get me down. I guess a drop in quality (real or perceived) comes with growing popularity. I've often seen some of the older guard lamenting a drop in quality - I just figured my barrage of witless, boorish comments had something to do with it. Maybe I'm just paranoid and self-conscious.

Apologies Dag, if I rubbed you the wrong way.>> ^dag:

Naw man, iz all good. We've had fluffier polls before. The trouble with channel specific polls is that we have no easy way to get to them at this point, if they would be on their own subdomain for instance. And having multiple polls at once will likely be confusing.

If there's nothing else going on, a little soft poll - polls have never been softer - is fine, to keep people on their toes. As long as we don't overdo it.

and @Throbbin you can always get a comfort hug from me..

I don't like the LOLpolls. Can be annoying when the sidebar's all:

Videosift urgently needs your vote on a crucial matter -

Which is more fabulous, kittens or ice cream?

*Kittens!
*Ice Cream!
*OMG I can't decide I love them both!

There's not near enough outrage in this thread.

FTR - polls need to be videosift related or related to "online video" in some fashion - per the FAQ. We may get around to creating channel polls - until that happens, I'm going to *discard this one -thanks.

I salute you @Tymberwulf, for having the intestinal fortitude to challenge the prevailing winds of VS. Jon Stewart? Sure - certainly sounds like it fits within "videosift related or related to "online video" in some fashion", don't it?

Could be that the original rational offered by @dag - that there are just so many Jon Stewart vids on VS so it's cool - is kinda weak? Maybe there's just something I'm missing. Maybe a double standard was exposed, and maybe it's just not cool to bring that kind of thing to light.

The worst part is that Tymberwulfs poll included an element related to videosift i.e. the inclusion of options pushing for channel-specific polls. In my humble opinion, that is considerably closer to the stated guidelines for a poll than a poll about a beard on a tv show. This indirect approach unfortunately results in suggestions of a stick in Tymberwulfs ass by @Sarzy. How very sad.

Some would say it is better to go along to get along. Others would say that's an awful way to view things.

That's some quality outrage there. You could be right- perhaps the Jon Stewart video should have been deleted as well- I'm not a perfect judge. Although I would resist any notion that I would let a poll stay up based on the person who posted it.

Anyway, we do want to keep the Sift Talk front page primarily to do with things related to VideoSift - although this poll may have had some VideoSift questions in it - it was put together in a confusing way - to be honest, I'm not sure what it was asking.

My issue wasn't with Tymberwulf's message (he's probably right about the beard poll being off-topic for sift talk) but rather the sanctimonious, humourless way he delivered it.
