Quake - Redux

ant says...

I got it via my Bethesda.Net Launcher's free copy from last year or so with its free giveaway. Not bad, but I prefer the third party enhancement mods. Hopefully, people will mod this one too. I do like the free addons since I never played them. Eww, that Quake 64 is so blurry.

Also, LGR's Clint played it on his old school CRT monitor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlZzcYbQ_ZI !

Amber Ruffin schools America about critical race theory

newtboy says...

Never one to miss an opportunity to display your race baiting ignorance, I see.

CRT and 1619 are adults dreams that maybe Americans like you can grow up enough and gain the testicular fortitude to learn their own history without whitewashing it for fear of catching the vapors and offending your delicate sensibilities. Doing that, ignoring centuries of deeply ingrained systemic racism, from legally considering black people subhumans, only 3/5 of a person ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-fifths_Compromise ) , to Jim Crow to redlining (Trump's favorite kind of racism) to the more subtle but pervasive racism of legislation aimed directly at black people without directly mentioning race (like voter ID laws and minimal polling places in black neighborhoods and gluts of polling places in predominantly white neighborhoods) has allowed ignoramuses to believe racism is over or never existed....because they don't see it with their blinders on, not because it's not there.

This is why education beyond 8th grade matters, Bob. Proud ignorance isn't a good look and gets you ridiculed every time you confidently spout nonsense.

General Mark Milley hits back at uproar over critical race..

newtboy says...

Lol.
So delusional, bob2.
China and Russia both expanded their territories into our allies territories during Trump's presidency, so did Daesh....he not only did nothing, he kissed their filthy assholes and asked for seconds. He abandoned our allies fighting Daesh, allowing them to survive and be a continuing danger to us.

True, China, Russia, and terrorists were laughing at us under Trump, but not so much anymore. Biden doesn't stand with Putin against our own intelligence community and our allies and treaties, nor with China against every other nation in Asia, nor with Russia, Turkey, and Syria when they try to starve millions of refugees. That was ALL Trump.

Hilarious you morons act like this is something new. CRT began in the 70's, not in January. Knowing your nations history, good and bad, is smart. The military has been teaching it for decades, including during Trump's entire term. Suddenly you are up in arms over it....why not 4+ years ago? You morons want to celebrate and foster ignorance and attack knowledge. No wonder you guys are such dumb losers.

You don't even grasp the obvious...
To know your Enemy, you must become your Enemy. ... If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle. Know thy enemy and know yourself; in a hundred battles, you will never be defeated.

You idiots don't want to know the enemy or ourselves, and have convinced yourselves that ignorance is bliss and strength. It's not. It's painful weakness.

Why They want to REPLACE YOU

JiggaJonson says...

I like how during the description of a sociopath who has no feelings for other human beings and no sympathy for them images of Hillary Clinton in some distorted VHS CRT filter appear on screen.

Because only the most sociopathic among us tries to get healthcare for every American: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinton_health_care_plan_of_1993

I'm actually about sick of arguing with people like you, It's like talking to an anti-vaccination person.

Well, I hope you get a metaphoric version of measles and get a re-education through experience.

Why Old Screens Make A High Pitched Noise

Jinx says...

Live long enough and you don't have to hear one of the most annoying sounds. CRTs might have more or less gone the way of the dodo, but coil whine can strike at ANY TIME!. If you can't hear it take it as a blessing cos irony is a thing and so is tinnitus.

Why Old Screens Make A High Pitched Noise

MilkmanDan says...

In the US, I believe that component in CRTs is called a "horizontal oscillator" instead of a "flyback transformer" (but could be that they are distinct yet related things). I've always been easily able to hear those, but am not usually bothered by them anymore since CRTs are fairly rare at this point. But this video proves that my 36 year old ears can still pick it up.

I feel like my hearing is bad -- I always want TVs louder than other people so I can make out what is being said, and in normal conversation it always seems like people are mumbling if there is any background noise at all. And I'm one of those annoying loud-talking Americans, especially if I'm talking on the phone (fortunately I don't get/answer many phone calls when I'm in public). But my hearing range pitch-wise seems to be exceptionally high, and not diminishing much with age (yet).

There's a fun easter egg for people like me at the end of that video. He put pulses of that CRT horizontal oscillator pitch where you can see the "Things You Might Know" text on the red background. I recognized it as Morse code, but couldn't decipher it even though I have an Amateur Radio license (I don't do code). In the comments at YT, people are claiming that the code translates to "never gonna give you up" -- so I guess he's Rickrolling people who both A) still have young enough ears to hear that 15kHz range *and* B) are old school enough to know / recognize Morse code. That's a pretty small target audience for an easter egg!

How Dad Helps His Child Experience Downhill Mountain Biking

Asmo says...

You're one of those "all the rights of free speech with none of the responsibility" types...

You threw the first stone with your ridiculous complaint about being too close to the screen (cos POV on a TV works so well 11 feet away and LCD's cook eyes like CRT's /eyeroll...). So it's okay for you to have a bitch about what is a very cool (and somewhat physically intensive) fun thing that a dad did for his kid, but it's not okay for people to point out that you're an ass..? Two way street mate, don't throw punches if you're too chickenshit to cop one back. = )

I would find the unreflected outrage of some people here quite amusing if it wasn't so sad.

She's probably smiling too hard to even SEE the screen...

Also, that's not a CRT, where an electron gun is constantly firing radiation at your face. It's an LED or LCD flatscreen. If you think THOSE do damage, then I respectfully submit you stop reading this and print it out because your monitor uses the same tech.

I only let my kids watch 1 hour of documentary TV per week, but even I can see that the bonding between that father and his daughter far outweighs any damage that might come from looking at a screen.

I've always said the word genius is bandied around way too much, and this video is a fine example. CRT screens/tvs follow the same idea - individual lights illuminate in sequence quickly enough to form a static picture, each pixel changes very slightly 100 times per second (refresh rate) to give the illusion of the original picture in motion. The CRT beam scans ("rasters") from top left to bottom right (for example) in exactly the same way that the device in the video spins (it rasters in a circle) and however many times it spins per second is the refresh rate.

It's a cool project and his PCB work is nice, and he's done a good job of translating a picture into a timed set of lights. The videographer uses the term genius because he was not previously aware of the long history of rasters. This would be a useful tool for teaching children about the process - CRTs might not be popular anymore, but CCDs are fundamental to (astro)physics, and the principles behind both cover a huge range of potential teaching topics.

Was so waiting for her to to catch a lethal jolt from dicking around with the CRT around 1:30 in. I guess it was already discharged before they let her screw with it.

based on the voice acting, and performances from the 'actors', my bet is he didn't cheat and that was some old crappy computer... It's just an ad.

My question is why do they all have crt's? is this video 10 years old or are they all THAT concerned with latency?
