Fair enough, but the problem in this case is the president alone. He's stirring up opposition to the bill and the party with his tweets.

Republicans can say that the ACA was written behind closed doors and pushed through all they want, but the truth is that Obama had much to do with its passing by promoting it and talking specifics. https://www.c-span.org/video/?292260-1/white-house-health-care-summit-part-1

Obama wasn't a president that simply repeated "it's a great bill, the BEST bill" over and over. Now, granted idk why the keep your doctor/plan line was repeated, but if you have a plan that doesn't let you go to the doctor, or a hospital, or get an ambulance, can you really call it health care anymore ?

At some point they had to define what health care was to be able to assign a legal consequence.

In summation, Obama helped the ACA along with speeches and conferences and open debates where he talked actual policy.

Trump is hurting his chances of passing anything by speaking only in vagaries and insults.

Agreed more was passed. It should be noted that under Obama the Democrats had more Democrats so getting to the 50 vote was much easy.

Man hit by Ute after car runs out of fuel

Which is unfortunate, but certainly worth clicking through to watch it. Really appreciated how the guy filming told the first person he saw to call an ambulance, solid job of doing what he could to get to a least bad outcome.

All the more necessary for a louder horn and some laws that give right of way to military vehicles just like the police/fire/ambulance services everywhere, at least that gives them immunity to damages incurred to all those vehicles and the license to practice that type of necessary "ass-hat-sery" without provoking too much scorn.

Granted, the loud horn shouldn't be a unique sounding horn, so as not to give away your location to attackers.

How a majority of those cars didn't yield makes me believe the absence of those laws and/or etiquette.

Someone who knows that letting vehicles, cattle, poultry, or objects stop you in a possibly hostile place is putting you into a static kill zone for an ambush or IED.

Yet this probably enrages the regular population too.

How a Storm Triggered a City-Wide Asthma Attack

oritteropo says...

It was certainly big news here the next day! It must have been scary for the people affected, particularly since the ambulance service was completely overwhelmed.

Something else that might have been a factor that Hank didn't mention is that the pollen count had already been very high for a few days before the thunderstorm, so everyone was already primed for it.

Thats crazy. @oritteropo must have been a big deal in your city. Sounds scary.

Tank Restorers Discover Gold Bars Hidden in ex Iraqi Tank

spawnflagger says...

The video has a lot of jump cuts - could be an extra bar that never made it to the video...

Certainly if they did keep it, they would not have posted a video about it. That's just inviting burglars to come around. When he called the police, he should have said "send an armored car" rather than an ambulance.

I couldn't see any stamp from the video, and if each bar was that heavy it's pretty close to pure, would be hard to trace unless they could prove where the tank was around the same time something large and gold was stolen...

I'd love to see a follow up on this one.

Unarmed Man Laying On Ground With Hands in Air Shot

MilkmanDan says...

I always have a tendency to think "let's not be hasty" when considering stuff like this. There's always (at least) two sides to every story.

For example, with Philando Castile (man shot in the car):
He *did* have a gun in the car.
His girlfriend said that he told the officer about it and did not do anything threatening at all, but there is/was at least *some* potential that the cops would tell a different story.
The video of the event didn't show how things escalated, so we have to figure it out based on the reports of two potentially biased reports -- the girlfriend/family and the police.

Honestly, that was enough to look quite bad for the police, BUT my "don't be hasty" tendencies were still in play.

And now, we've got this. Like @newtboy has been saying, I just can't fathom the level of incompetence required to make this an "oops" situation. If they were trying to shoot the autistic man and missed and hit Kinsey by mistake ... that's fucked up.

A) If they were trying to "protect" Kinsey, how about listening to him? Did he sound nervous, like he needed protecting? NO. He calmly explained the entire situation, and was obviously NOT afraid of the autistic guy doing him any harm. And this time, they've got a lot of the lead-up on video, so we can actually hear him explain the situation. Any cop (or anyone) with 2 brain cells to rub together would holster their firearm if they listened to his explanation. Maybe they would stay behind cover and let Kinsey either talk the autistic guy into dropping the toy truck in his hand or let him get up and show them clearly that it was not a weapon (since they were responding to a report about someone possibly having a gun), but there's clearly no need to keep the guns aimed on either of them -- and Kinsey told them as much.

B) If they were trying to "protect" him, then why did they cuff him? With 3 sets of cuffs, apparently. After shooting, once they approached and figured out that there was no weapon, any decent human being would jump into action to try to mitigate the fallout of their dumbass mistake. Don't cuff the guy you "accidentally" shot -- call for an ambulance, try to stop the bleeding, etc.

For fucks sake, if that is the story the police are coming up with to explain / defend (hah!) their actions, it is just utterly pathetic. Charge the shooter and the entire police department with something criminal, and throw the law book at every single one of them. My normally strong "let's not be hasty" impulse is looking at this entire mess with a double /facepalm.

Very glad that Mr. Kinsey is expected to fully recover. Maybe the silver lining beyond his survival will be that an event this blatant almost has to force us to acknowledge that there is a serious problem with how our police are operating.

Bill Maher and Colbert - Police Culture has to change

vil says...

Except you cant compare this to (car) accidents. You could compare this to occurrences of ambulance drivers driving through packed pedestrian crossings or firemen setting fire to buildings, soldiers driving tanks over cars on the highway etc. If that kind of thing happened once a week someone would notice. Someone would be responsible. Something would be done.

I only get involved with cops when speeding or parking and over here in central Europe it is a friendly affair of getting a fine or a reprimand. If I go to visit Germany or Austria I fear the police for the fines are heftier and a stern talking to in german is nothing to look forward to, in the east or south of Europe a small bribe and more extensive language difficulties are the norm. Visiting the US somehow always involves warnings about how to behave so as not to get killed by cops. Go figure.

Hoss, a dog, stealing a sandwich from a three/3 years old ch

Payback says...

My main problem is they're allowing the dog to think itself even equivalent to the child, let alone dominant.

I bet Hoss wouldn't even think of doing this to the guy with the camera. Yet cameraman thinks it's cute Hoss feels dominant over his child. One child bite coming up... This is heading toward a textbook "...but Hoss was always so good natured!!!" after the ambulance comes.

But I won't. I don't like this

I should say that it appears the camera operator knew what was coming. That is why I don't like this. If it honestly was a doggy moment... well, I don't know enough about dogs and kids to know if there should have been intervention as soon as the dog loomed.
