On the face of it, he is totally right about the utter shallowness and vapidity of mainstream culture.

But, on the other hand, I can go to videosift and watch Stephen Colbert interview Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

I guess what I'm saying is you don't need to let the bullshit interfere with your life.

I have some shallow tastes -- I kept waiting for him to be sick of something that I like and pursue.

But I am just as disinterested in all the things he chose to highlight.

I feel a tiny flame of pride that my shallow tastes aren't the most shallow.

One more thing I am sick of? Survivor Anyplace.

I don't enjoy celebrity news, reality TV, chain stores, or trendy Apple products either. But I also don't feel any pressure to do so. At least, not from anyone other than advertisers. And who cares what advertisers think of you?

The stuff he complains about is stuff that I'm hardly ever exposed to, except maybe in satirical references on the daily show. TV is old hat. Celebrity gossip is the lowest sort of entertainment for idiots. There are plenty of alternatives.
