Octopus Eggs Hatching - Mother's Ultimate Sacrifice

Video: Vimeo - Koos du Preez (A mothers ultimate sacrifice)

'A Giant Pacific Octopus mates only once and when it has done so, it has already begun dying. The mother will lay her eggs in her den and stay there and never leave.. not even to eat.. once the eggs hatch, she is allowed to leave.. but only in spirit.. her body must stay behind as a reminder of her ultimate sacrifice.'

Story by KING 5 News: "It was just thousands of them out there, and you could see it looks like fairy dust almost, when you sit down they are just everywhere around you. It's a pretty amazing sight," he said.

Du Preez explained that after the female octopus lays her eggs she will stay in her "den" for up to six months, protecting the eggs and fanning oxygenated water over them.

"She never waivers from her duty, she never stops, she never leaves and she never eats. She knows that if she even hesitates, the eggs will die," he said. "And then when the eggs start to hatch, she blows a final jet of water over them as she looks upon her offspring and then she dies."

Du Preez said of 100,000 eggs, only three to five babies will reach maturity and repeat the same cycle.

He said his experience was one of his saddest, yet happiest dives ever.

Well ~0.00004% of them. The survival rate is actually far from impressive, the growth though yes, is generally amazing in any life.>> ^JiggaJonson:

So wait, you're telling me that, with barely any assistance from a mature animal, these barely multicellular baby octopuses survive on their own to become THIS???

That's pretty damned impressive.

Put sad music to anything to make it "touching". Watch a video of me taking a crap to this song and you'll be like "wow, he endures such pain just to expel the biological waste from his intestines so that he may eat again"

Oh and make sure it's in HD. Slow motion wouldn't hurt either...

With a ~0.00004% birth survival rate, Noah must have stuck far more than 2 of them into the Ark to help ensure their survival. Because with the huge volume of rain required to cover all landmass completely, the diluted ocean would certainly have caused salt water critters, as well as freshwater critters (due to ocean mixing), to perish. I'm glad Noah took such things into consideration. Otherwise certainly they would have become extinct. Just like the dinosaurs at the same time. I would have loved to see the giant aquarium Noah built in the ark. For certainly he mastered the art of keeping sea creatures alive before the invention of protein skimming (foam fractionation), filtration, and general understanding of chemistry required to maintain appropriate marine conditions within the GLORIOUS ship that the Ark was. Absolutely amazing that he, alone, was able to do ALL that for all the millions of unique species spread worldwide. Even then. The amazing effort it must have took to repopulate the planet after the ark came to rest on Mt Ararat. Fascinating. Even today with all of our technology and know-how. Such a feat would have been impossible. Noah. You da man!

In most cephalopods, the majority of energy from food intake goes straight to promoting rapid growth until the day they die.

Short-lived, extremely vulnerable, and as an evolutionary result, highly intelligent, they are paradoxical little blobs of manipulative protein with potential for near unlimited growth relative to other animals; had the parameters for their selection been slightly different (favoring longer lifespans over super short, super fecund ones) they may have been the dominant intelligent aquatic lifeforms on this planet. Considering the circumstances, I'd say they do pretty damn good for themselves.

If the Earth were to undergo another mass extinction, wiping out all mammals, my bet would be on these guys eventually taking over.

Thanks, but I think the remix made the song worse.
