NZ passes gay marriage bill - gallery busts into Maori song

Wonderful moment when the New Zealand Parliament passes a gay marriage equal rights amendment, which triggers a spontaneous rendition of a Maori Love song from the gallery in celebration.

The waves are breaking, against the shores of Waiapu,
My heart is aching, for your return my love.

Oh my beloved girl, come back to me, I could die of love for you.

I have written you a letter, and enclosed with it my ring,
So your people could see it how much I'm troubled for you..

Oh my beloved girl, come back to me, I could die of love for you

My poor pen is broken, my paper is spent,
But my love for you endures, and remains forever more.

Oh my beloved girl, come back to me, I could die of love for you

The sun's hot sheen, won't scorch my love,
Being kept evergreen, by the falling of my tears.

Oh girl, Come back to me, I could die of love for you.

I'm not sure it was spontaneous.

At the very beginning of the video the Speaker of the House says "there will be a waiata (maori song) after the clerk has announced etc."

So, probably planned, but awesome nonetheless.

It's a great shame that most Australians either don't object or actively support the right for gays and lesbians to marry, but both major parties block it.

The Labor gov. (ostensibly socialist) has enough support in the balance of power cross benchers to get this through, but members of the party, including the Prime Minister, are opposed to it...

The Kiwis, who we often make fun of as backwards sheep shaggers, are once again proving to be far more advanced in the realm of human rights than we are.

Ngā mihi nui me te aroha nui (congratulations and best wishes!)

Now that didn't ruin the country, did it? Basic civil rights are inevitable (except in Muslim countries) and long overdue.

Was hoping they'd break into the haka as well.

I misread it as AZ at first and was like, "Wow, really? Arizona? The state where it's illegal to be not-white in public without proof of citizenship? Oh, NZ! Ok, yeah, I can believe that."

44 no votes. Yes grandson back in the day we actually had a vote to allow some people to marry each other and I voted against it. Really grandad? Gee you were such a dick back then.
