How do you know God isn't real?

"How do you know God isn't real?" Chris from Austin, Texas has all the knowledge he needs, because "in Romans, chapter 1, verse 20 it says..." According to Matt, Captain Kirk also said something, but quoting from the Bible isn't going to get you anywhere.

Sigh...., I feel sorry for these guys. They argue the same information over and over with a new person every time we see them. No one ever has any solid proof of their faith (which is why they call it faith, by the way), and no one ever has any solid understanding of what science or physics is.

I don't know why these people even bother to phone in. Just once I'd like to see someone with a truly good argument. Challenge them a little. That doesn't mean the argument can't be explained away, just give us someone with some working knowledge of reality so we can watch a debate that isn't so one-sided!

And yet they keep getting sifted. I can't even enjoy the caller's stupidity because they keep shouting over him.

To me, someone with a grasp on reality is someone with a grasp on what we know is real.
Now, I like Sci-fi and Fantasy as much as the next guy but these guys aren't dealing in fiction.

They are looking for some serious debate with someone who has some facts and hard evidence under their belt. Some religious scholar or historian with a few proven religious "facts" in addition to the basic workings of physics and what science has already proven as indisputable fact.

The problem I have with this stuff is that very little gets accomplished. The caller will continue being ignorant and the hosts, despite being correct, do nothing to make atheism more acceptable in the public's eyes. It's lose/lose.

There is no debate or discourse in this show, its just two sides yammering at each other. Sure one side has facts and evidence on their side, but this is real life and sometimes facts and evidence don't matter, just ask the OJ Simpson. We do not live in a society where facts and evidence reign supreme, and just shouting over the caller and cutting him off doesn't change that.

In my opinion, the existence of god or the lack thereof is irrelevant. The problem is the role of religion in today's society. The problem is not the deity. The problem are the PEOPLE who claim to know what that deity is all about. Even if Atheists could provide evidence that god does not exist, it just would not matter because it's corrupt religions that cause the problems in society, not god.

I don't care if someone believes in god or not, what matters is whether or not a person is a productive member of society and is helpful to his fellow man, not hurtful. It is PEOPLE, using religion, who have a long history of being hurtful to humanity, they are the threat, not god. For all we know, the caller is a good person who works hard to support his family. I don't care that he believes differently than me or if he isn't good with issues of logic or reason. He's not the problem, god is not the problem, it's the PEOPLE of the preisthood that constantly pressures and manipulates people like that to be intolerant and ignorant.

Atheists are fighting the wrong fight. Why do these people continue to tilt against windmills with people who already have their minds made up and aren't going to swayed no matter how convincing the argument is. All this does is pump up the people who already feel the same way you do. It doesn't improve things one bit. Well except make for good comedy I suppose.

I disagree a bit, I think these spats do help people who are on the fence and beginning to think about religion seriously, and do help people who suddenly got religion and are starting to realize what they're getting in to. It also helps atheists with ways of forming arguments against.

You're 'the problem isn't with God, it's with the people' argument is a bit silly to me too. If you're on the side that God doesn't exist at all I mean.

I disagree completely, have you ever sat down and watched an entire episode of the Atheist experience? They almost always try and approach questions and discussions dialectically, they're constantly having to explain common misconceptions and logical fallacies. The folks that tune in and actually watch and listen are going to find an enlightening conversation.

Sadly, many of the folks that call in are just looking for a shouting match.

The show offers much more than just a stroke of our ego, they've covered a vast number of subjects within different contexts.

Poster here,
I watch this show in it's entirety every Sunday, but I live 3 hours away from Austin so I can't actually watch it on cable. This happened to be a short episode due to studio requirements and so they made it a non-lecture, call-in only program. Most callers are non-theists, and I'd guess most viewers are too. Many of the admirers of the show have asked Matt and other hosts to allow more theists to call in and debate them. Yes sometimes its just the entertainment factor, but I agree that some of the non-theists that call in don't always bring much in the way of new topics to the show. Thank you VideoSift for bringing this program to my attention!

VoodooV, I believe that indeed they are fighting the "good" fight. Many of the theist callers (especially in my opinion the ones that start with "I'm a theist...) are sitting on the fence. The reason Matt continues to do the show are for these people. I'm guessing its rare that anyone is 'unconverted' on the show, but it gets the ball rolling. I think if a theist calls in and wants to debate Matt, he wants to practice defending his position because in his or her own mind he is questioning it.

Wow! smugness, arrogance, AND stupidity all on one youtube channel. Sign me up for more of that. I don't know what's worse the stupid people who call in, or the idiots who waste their time with them, and for what? To stroke their egos and validate their place in history as being more self rightous than the gods they demonize.

Some of these people need to learn basic logic.

Let's assume that somehow it even was possible to demonstrate that the universe was created by an intelligent being, then this STILL does not prove that this being is the biblical god.

I mean seriously: "Imma prove the bible is real by quoting the bible!"?
wth.

this show bores me.
i used to find it funny and entertaining but now it is just the same old shit every time.
some person calls up...
tries to use a literary hybrid to back up their claims of god.
the hosts vivisects this poorly thought out premise but due to the fact that the caller is not AWARE that their premise is based on a literary hybrid and believes it to be factual (i am looking at YOU fundamentalists),they get spanked pretty soundly.
now maybe they should get spanked..they did after all call the show and not vice versa..but that does not change the fact that this show has become a skipping record.

the fundamental core of this argument is stalemated by design.
you cannot disprove faith..nor can you prove it.
the only time it is even possible is if a person of faith bases their entire paradigm based on the bible.the bible is organic.we can touch, feel and most importantly READ the bible.
if you can read it..you can argue it.
sadly most people have not read the very text that they base their faith on (i am looking at your again fundamentalist) and they fall into the trap because most atheists i know HAVE read the bible.
it is actually a very good tool.
to use the very thing many people have based their faith on to rip the the wool off their eyes but i have never...not once..seen this work to diminish someones faith.
maybe faith in their religion.the dogma they grew up with but not the core of that faith.

so watching this program has become something akin to watching turtles fuck.
yeah..it is interesting for a few minutes but then it just gets repetitive and boring.
