Had No Idea 'Car Wrapping' Was A Thing

Call me surprised.

I've heard of a few people doing it over here. And if you don't like it you can just peel it off and it doesn't damage the paint underneath.

On many occasions it's also a lot cheaper than redoing the paint on the whole car, plus it protects the paint itself to some extent. Of course there are some really expensive vinyls, but then again, all paint ain't the same price either.

I'd think if I was getting a wrap, I'd want something more exciting than a plain color, some sort of graphical design.
I'm actually surprised more car companies don't offer wraps at the dealerships or with dealership partners to add more custom options to their cars. Perhaps not full wraps, but some additional graphical flair. Like the pinstripes of old...

The tiny bit I looked into it says it can still be thousands of dollars to be done correctly--it's obviously still labor-intensive-- and doesn't last as long as a good paint job. Seems some folks do it because they want a different color car, but they don't want their resale value to plummet by doing an actual repainting, which wrapping avoids.

plus the wraps can be bright shiny strange reflective colors that just cannot be done with traditional paint+wax.

I've seen gold wrap on a Mercedes and even green Ferraris with them - basically extra bling to stand out in a crowd.

The Jalopnik comments support @oohlalasassoon's suggestion: $2,000 for a car, or perhaps $600 for just a roof (which you might want to do to protect it from salt water from kayaks for instance).

How long does it take to do this from start to finish? I have a fantastic idea for an April fools day joke on my partner. >:Þ

I spent a couple of years doing pin-striping and vinyl customizations on used cars, and I have to say, whoever did the work in this video was far more expert than anyone I've ever seen. Even 8 inch tape is a serious pain in the ass to work with. Getting the bubbles out from under it is a nightmare.

I can't even imagine trying to do 5-6 foot sheets.
