Chinese Couples vs. Western Couples

ChaosEnginesays...

ugh, really?

Sorry, this is just the most lazy, cliched nonsense.

"Hah, women take money from their husbands!"

That joke was old when Married with Children did it. Hell, it was old when the Jetsons did it.

mxxconsays...

I think it was very negative towards "western" couple and only mild jabs at the chinese one.

SFOGuysaid:

I can guess what you mean, but to be explicit; in one or both directions?

GenjiKilpatricksays...

Ugh, really? Were you not hugged as a child?

Is that why you always nay-say and intentionally miss the point of every video?

- Firstly, cliche & stereotypes can still be humorous or provoking..

It's part of the reason they become overused, lots of people can relate.

- Secondly, THE VIDEO IS COMPARING THE CLICHES PRESENT IN CHINESE VS AMERICAN RELATIONSHIPS!!

Wtf, man. That's the point of the video.

To give both types of couple a little chuckle and go "yeah, that's definitely us".

For comedy purposes.. cause it's a comedy youtube channel..

If you don't find cliches funny, wtf would you watch more than half the video..?

Shit man, wonder what trivial shit 80-year-old Chaos is gonna complain about.

"Eggs for breakfast!? Why are we still serving people EGGS for breakfasts?!"

Glad I'm not the only one surprised by that surprising thought (which felt a lot like troll bait). It's not stand-up comedy where a comedian should be ripped to shreds for stealing someone else's material. If every funny video could only be funny with a totally original thought there wouldn't be many funny videos at all.

And I totally found a lot of humor in it personally on both sides of the equation that relate to me (Westerner) and my wife (Easterner).

@lucky760

Frankly, it was borderline racist and definitely sexist, but the real problem was that it was just boring and unfunny.

I watched more than half the video because I was hoping it was going to get better. It didn't.

Sorry if thinking a comedy video should be funny counts as "trolling".

lucky760says...

Your criticism wasn't that it was unfunny, but that it was old, cliched nonsense.

Like any comedy it clearly won't (and couldn't) speak to everyone, especially if you relate to none of the stereotypical behaviors portrayed, but it seemed a little stilted to palm your lack of enjoyment off on cliche.

I would have thought that calling a joke old, and "lazy cliched nonsense" would have pretty strongly indicated I thought it was unfunny.

I can relate to plenty of the behaviours depicted, the same way I can relate to bad airline food, queueing for a driver's licence or any other tired comedy cliche. Doesn't make it funny.

You see the shit you get yourself into by making silly statements?

You didn't need to say anything. At all, Chaos.
Just downvote and be done.

At most, leave a comment saying "I did not find this funny."

So it's not that thinking something is unfunny that makes you trolly..

It's making unnecessary comments that trashes a thing that, you clearly could and should have remained silent about..
.. that makes your comments trollish.

If you don't have anything constructive to say, why say anything at all? [A point Lantern & Bobknight don't get clearly]

Yeah, silly me for thinking the point of this site was to comment on videos. Fuck knows what I was thinking.

and since you clearly have nothing of any value to add other than bitching about other peoples posts... ignore

lucky760says...

Just to explain my confusion: You made a pretty strong point about a single, very specific topic in in the video. That's an indication you just took issue with that joke.

Of course simply relating to a cliche doesn't make it funny. The video made it funny. To some.

Engelssays...

Sorry, with ChaosEngine here. Not particularly funny, and it smacked of a really lame assed attempt to stereotype 'Western" couples. There's no such thing, and even if there was, having a US couple represent the entirety of western civilization is a bit of a stretch which I suspect the English, nevermind the German, French, Italian, etc. would object to.

So ya, just pointless.

MilkmanDansays...

I liked it a lot, but then again I'm in a Western/Eastern mixed marriage also. Maybe that helps.

To each his own, but one thing that really rang true for me was Western PC-ness and being judgmental vs Eastern pragmatism. Last time I visited home (US) with my wife and daughter, *everybody* (strangers on up to family) gave unsolicited advice / criticism of parenting decisions (breast vs bottle, diapers vs cloth, etc. etc.), all acting like they know best. Everybody is a critic / doctor / psychologist / scientist all wrapped into one. Here in Thailand, that never happens -- there is moderate reluctance to step on toes even if you *ask* for advice. There isn't anything inherently "right" or "wrong" about either way, but as someone who has lived in two separate cultures, the video's portrayal of that general mentality really struck a chord with me.

No offense to those that didn't enjoy it; comedy can never be all things to all people.

Yeah, I've been to China a number of times and can see some of the Chinese cultural things going on in this video as being true. Being a white married American I can see some of the western cultural things being true as well.
That said I still found the video to be boring and skipped ahead.

Magicpantssays...

It's blatantly racist, incorporating the straw-man logical fallacy to effect propaganda . From the second the Caucasian called his wife a "B*tch" it message was "Chinese people are better at loving one another." Frankly, I was surprised the western wife didn't end up a women's shelter with a black eye, or worse.

lucky760says...

That's patently false. It's not racist to depict true personality traits that are popular or common in a culture.

I've witnessed many American couples on many occasions discuss and demonstrate their disapproval about sharing their food. The best example that my wife and I often laugh about was an older couple where the wife was reaching over to pick at something small (maybe a french fry) and the husband with a scowl completely seriously and angrily slapped the back of her hand to stop her.

No, not all westerners or Americans would do such a thing, nor do all have a problem with their partner picking at their food, but that's because there isn't ANYTHING that EVERYONE of ANY race does, except breathe and poop, but it is a common thing in this culture.

I disagree, for the same reasons as Jerry Seinfeld:
http://www.ew.com/article/2015/06/08/jerry-seinfeld-politically-correct-college-campuses

I think that especially in the US, people feel this need to justify their normally diverse reactions to things with concrete "causes". They don't like things because they are "sexist" or "racist", or because they are "passive aggressive" or whatever. Bust most of the time, we just like or dislike things because it either DOES or DOES NOT resonate with us individually on a personal level.

All the rationalizing can maybe help us as individuals figure out why we like/dislike the things we do, but it seems like we Americans have some tendency to assume our tastes are (or should be) universal.

...Not that my opinion on this topic is any more (or less) valid than yours.

If it were just a matter of tastes I would agree with you. BUT there is a very racist message in the video that "western" people are not as capable of love as fully as Chinese people.

Personally traits have nothing to due with it, the video has two messages the first, funny message, is that yes there is a difference between the traits of westerners and Chinese people. The second, racist message, is that western couples don't actually love each other.

The video shows all the Chinese personality quarks as good natured ways the couple loves each other, such as sharing food, and the man sacrificing his money. The "western" people are shown in a relationship where they don't trust each other such as the man calling his SO a "b*tch" and spending all their money behind her back.

Think for a second, what of the video had been made about African Americans? would that be okay? (No it would not)

lucky760says...

That's so fascinating to me. You're clearly only looking at all the couples from one perspective: American males are shit and Chinese males are wonderful.

Try considering it from both points of view in both couples. The Chinese girl forces her boyfriend to hand over all his money even though he clearly doesn't want to. In order to appease his ball-and-chain, the Chinese guy has to bribe her with a purse. The Chinese girl forces her guy to hold her purse and suffer through shopping with her. The Chinese father-in-law is overtly overbearing and controlling. Chinese couples dump off their babies with in-laws to live free of their burden.

It's not racist to joke about American males being infamously fearful of commitment. In America there are endless references in popular culture to that aspect of American society all the time. Does that make racist the producers of such content?

It's also very commonplace for couples in America to get divorced. Would it have been racist if they'd joked about Americans divorcing versus Chinese staying together despite being miserable?

It's a matter of facts, and pointing out facts in a humorous (to some) way is not a racist act.

And the whole "fucking bitch" line was mostly an over-exaggeration for comedic effect, and it worked. But the fact remains that it's not uncommon for Americans to really feel that way about their SO picking off their plate. (Like I said, I've seen worse than a verbal insult in the form of a physical attack.) Whereas it's ostensibly more uncommon in China.
