Bristol Palin Against Abstinence

Sarah Palin has famously opposed sex-ed programs other than "abstinence education." Funny, then, that daughter Bristol was on Fox News tonight saying abstinence is "not realistic at all."

Fantastic, first she says abstinence is unreasonable, then says it's still right, then says the way to make abstinence work is for teenagers who get pregnant to be vilified by the press (though I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that she probably isn't volunteering for public scorn).

But wait, during the campaign I thought Bristol Palin was a hero, and a model example of Doing The Right Thing?

Ahh, the joy of watching people try to untangle the webs they've woven themselves into.

She's like, you know, like, completely, like, missing the point.

Really..

Yes: She would not be pregnant if she had remained abstinent

BUT

Also: She also would not be pregnant if she used condoms or the pill

To try to suggest the everyone should refrain from having sex until their 20s is insane, she knows that, she had sex. I'm not surprised that they think they way they do. Their religious upbringing makes them think that sex outside of marriage is a sin, and wrong and should not be succumbed to.

When in fact, there's nothing wrong with it, can be wonderful, can bring you closer to someone, can help you grow as a person.

BUUUUT.

There is, obviously, a maturity level (not necessarily linked with age, but pretty close) that needs to be reached before you start. Too young and you've turned sex into far less than it should be. Waiting is fine if that's what you want to do, but don't do it on some misguided notions of religion or that it's the only way to not get pregnant.

Wait if you don't feel like you're ready, that you'd like to experience other things more before you move into the realms of having sex. If you do it for those reasons, huge respect from me, and utmost support. Never cave into peer pressure to have sex. That's what should be taught at school... how sex works in a purely mechanical sense, and also what can and does get ascribed to it in an emotional sense. And teach kids it's OK to say no, but at the same time that if they want to that there are ways to make it a safe thing to do.

Is she still planning on marrying the father? I'd love to see some statistics on how many marriages resulting from that situation (high school age) are successful beyond 5-10 years. The same thing happened to my wife's older sister, and it ended in a nasty divorce 8 years later.

Both parents should be responsible financially for the child, but I can't imagine "forced" marriages improving the situation at all.

The context of her statements help explain what she was saying. The whole interview is here. The pertinent quote is right at the end. Prior to that she talks about waiting 10 years to have a baby, saying to wait 10 years several times. She is saying wait ten years to get pregnant.

She is basically promoting contraceptives and education (if only by example), but she can't come out and say it, perhaps because of her mom's politics or her upbringing.

Considering this girl's parents, I think she did pretty well in this interview.

After watching the full interview, this clip gives me the impression that perhaps young miss Palin was wanting to come out and advocate comprehensive sex ed and denounce her mother's position. But seeing as how it was an interview on FOX, probably figured if she spoke her mind she'd be eviscerated by the interviewer.

Even accepting this as a possible explanation, I'm still disappointed, though not surprised, that she wasn't able to handle herself more effectively, and with a few hundred less "likes". That apple didn't fall far enough from the tree.

Christ, just as inarticulate, uneducated, and scarily appealing to dumbfucks as her mother.

I'm not entirely sure that she's "against" abstinence or quite "gets it." She sort of says both things: "its unrealistic" followed by "you should just wait ten years, it would be so much easier."

The reality is that if she has been EDUCATED with REAL information instead of the bullshit that these abstinence programs spew out, she WOULD have had an easier time of her first sexual experiences and probably wouldn't have become pregnant.

My highschool back in the late 80s and 90s was insanely hyper about sex education. I became sexually active at 15, mind you in retrospect that is kind of scary, but used a condom EVERY FREAKING TIME. Properly too I might add (don't ask me about putting condoms on bananas, I know way too much about it).

So while I think this is a great illustration of why abstinence programs are utter poo, I don't think that Palin jr. is necessarily or clearly speaking out against them.

She's a young girl put into national spotlight. Her verbal skills are not upto part with the rest of the media figures.

You're putting a high school girl on a podium and expecting her to give some sort of politically inspiring speech. It's like taking a 10 year old son of some famous athlete, put him in the same professional team that his dad plays in, playing the same position and expect him to perform in the same level as his father.

Maybe 10 years afterwards she may form her own style of speech and articulate her opinion, and that's a MAYBE.

Bristol Palin shouldn't have accepted the interview, but when your mom is a (in)famous public icon you're bound to get wound up with this field somehow.

All I am saying is that we shouldn't analyze this interview as we would with other public figures. She's young, and it's only an individual's opinion.

Wait, what? She says she is against abstinence, but she says you should wait ten years? That IS abstinence there, sweetie.

It seems like she has been programed by the same people that programed her mom with the same three answers to everything.
