Brave Kitten Stands Up to Huge Dog

BuzzFeed: Little kitty, you're an inspiration to us all.

YouTube Description:

You really have to give this little kitty some credit for being so brave. That Rottweiler didn't stand a chance!

Or you could look at it from the point of view of the has-no-choice kitten, who sees a carnivore that is 20 times its size loudly making noise and big movements nearby, not spotting any decent cover anywhere near close, and instinctually thinking that if it turns and tries to run it will be snapped up as a bitty-sized crunchy mouthful in half a second, so it crams itself into a corner...

tldr; not quite sure "cute" applies.

I dunno if the kitteh knows it, but the dog is definitely just playing. The kitten gets well within its range on several occasions without risking anything. Kitteh does look a little shell-shocked towards the end (deafening barks might do that to such a frail little being).

I didn't like the way they tried to shove the kitten closer to the dog. I think it had enough to contend with. Stupid people.

What does it have to contend with? Someone to play with?

I've been around animals enough to know that this is the body language of two animals who are curious and playful about each other. I think at the end the kitten has had enough but it doesn't look scared.

And I've been around animals enough to know that this cat is scared at the end. Welcome to the internet, Dr. Fucking Dolittle.>> ^Quboid:

Er? Are you serious or what? Are you trying to say I'm full of crap as anyone can pretend to be Dr. Dolittle on the internet?

Retroboysays...

Well, Quboid, I'd have to say that apparently you're not as good at reading signals from others as you think.

I've never seen a kitten "play" with arched back and hair standing straight up, and I'd never put my hands close to an adult cat that was this cheesed off. We're talking probable buzzsaw here.

Quboidsays...

If it was scared it would hide, as it does half heartedly at the end when I think it feels this is getting too much. The species wouldn't last if kittens didn't instinctively know that squaring up to real danger means extinct kitty.

I don't claim to be Dr. Dolittle, just someone who has had pet cats and dogs. That cat is acting like it's known this dog all it's short life and is used to playing. I've seen kittens play with arched back from time to time, that's how they learn. Cats in real danger only stand their ground and arch their backs when they've got no other choice and since there's effectively nothing behind it, it would run.

I'd like to think you're right, Quboid, but it really looks to me like that cat is quite scared. I also don't like the way it was motioned towards the dog.

The people weren't the most sensitive, and they were trying to get a reaction from the dog or the kitten. That I don't agree with, so whatever I say next I don't think the people were right.

However, I tend to agree with Quboid here. The cat isn't scared, it's curious and unsure. If it was scared it would run away. Retroboy has never seen a cat play looking like that, but I'm betting he hasn't been living with and breeding cats for ten years like I have.

I'm not doctor doolittle, but I do know cats. At the end of the video the cat isn't too happy and is slinking away. The situation isn't the cleverest, but that's not a really scared kitten. Domesticated animals like this don't have the same reaction to situations that a wild animal would have. That need to be fearful has been largely bred out, to the detriment of a lot of cats. The phrase curiosity killed the cat most certainly has it's origin in fact!

The body language and behaviour both animals was playful. I think a lot of the animosity toward this video is from people not really understanding what they're seeing. That is not a scary dog, at least not when it's behaving like that, and a scared cat will run away - it's not cornered!
