An Unfortunate History of White Actors Playing Other Races

"... As actors of color struggle to find roles and gain acceptance by mainstream Hollywood, we look back at the unfortunate history of roles of color being played by white actors..."

Kahn is a genetically modified human, a leftover from Earth's Eugenics Wars. Played by Montalban and ruled over Asia and the Middle East before being deposed, some books place him as North Indian and a Sikh, but then who knows what genetic modification might do to someone's racial appearance.
So while Montalban is still not white, he's not Indian either.

Uhhhh... I gotta take issue with "Khan." Wtf race is someone from another planet supposed to be? You guessed it, alien.

Aside from that, it IS a big deal. I loved the movie "The Book of Life," for example; but for a movie that is a celebratory explosion of Mexican culture, the cast probably shouldn't include so many old white actors: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2262227/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm

@JiggaJonson
khan noonien singh was a genetically enhanced human prince from the 1990's and participated in the eugenics wars, which consequently was the reason for his,and his followers, fleeing to space and escaping the inevitable aftermath from their defeat.

his spaceship the botany bay was discovered 300 years later by captain kirk and the starship enterprise, perfectly preserved in cryogenic sleep.

you all may bow to my geek prowess.

i think this video is referring to the original actor and appear to have taken issue with cumberbatch not being a latin actor.

which i agree with you is pretty damn nitpicky.

on another note.
my first date ever with a young black woman was soul man, starring c thomas howel.i didnt really research the movie and was mortified when c thomas howel painted his face as black man.thank god she was a good sport.though she did bust my chops for months after.

true story.

And they explained away Khan's original appearance being transformed into Khanberbatch as just futuristic cosmetic surgery in the prequel comic I think.

But yes, it's still stupid. In their defense, how else were they going to do Khan? The person would have had to have looked like Montalblan otherwise.

But going back to stupid since it was just stupid to reboot the Khan storyline. Cuz yeah, a genetic superman from the 1990s would be a really big help fighting a war in 2200s. Obviously war in the 2200s is exactly the same as it was in 1900, no leap in logic for this fossil to design a hyper advanced starship that dwarfs the flagship of the day...not at all.

Part of that genetic enhancement package was greater intelligence. Having a great mind in the 90's doesn't necessarily make you incapable of understanding life in the 2200's, you still have the same capacity, you just need to update your information.

I don't have a problem with many of these like Alec Guiness and Anthony Quinn in Lawrence of Arabia and after all they did have Omar Sharif. How many big name arab or more specifically bedouin actors were available at that time. And you can't expect a big blockbuster movie to go after no names

On the other hand some of these were cringe worthy and downright offensive ... Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's being a prime example.

I was just out at a store where they showed a trailer on a TV for some upcoming shitfest named "Gods of Egypt". All white cast as far as I can tell. Shameful.

Oh, I do LOVE the inclusion of every Jesus ever. Poignant.

"Ethiopians imagine their gods as black and snub-nosed; Thracians blue-eyed and red-haired. But if horses or lions had hands, or could draw and fashion works as men do, horses would draw gods shaped like horses and lions like lions, making the gods resemble themselves."

That Short Circuit character made me cringe when I first saw it, if for no other reason than the actor was complete shit even without the accent.

I also firmly believe some of these HAD to be played by whites as no one with a shred of self respect would play the character the way the director obviously wanted if they were that race...
