7 Stages of Skyrim Addiction

Culture Buzz: It’s only funny because it’s true.

Haha, I totally played that game five days straight... I mean I didn't play it - I LIVED IT!

And it was awesome. I hit a bug on the main quest, did everything else and went back and patched it finally a week ago and finished the main story - I really only had one hour left on the main quest, not much reason left to play it anymore except to see some of those awesome main quest segments where weird contraptions morph and open and up in the most bizarre ways.

I have been avoiding this game. Meanwhile I reached 110 hours on BF3 today, and I am just now feeling like I've really got the hang of that game.

Games just keep getting better and better.

Wow...I didn't experience anything like this. I mean, I like the game, but it hasn't hampered my life in any bit. It's just one of the things I do in my limited spare time now. Granted, sometimes it's the only thing I do in my limited spare time, but I haven't missed anything important because of it.

Vanilla graphics in the game rather suck (now we know what it's only a 5.9 gig game). Thankfully there are half a dozen mods out there that make your mind blow with delicious graphics lol.

As to the game, I'm still not done with it. My main guy is 35 and I still feel like I haven't really scratched the surface. With the Creation Kit hitting this month and DLC most certainly on it's way, there are many many hours of enjoyment to be had with Skyrim.

OMG, just hit level 34 with main guy and ready to blow my head off. Seriously did you have to make this game so freaking big and delicious? I took my X-box to China so that I could continue to play after work. How sad is that. Every spare moment I had, I spent playing this game. I figured out that every little dungeon you come across is going to take about 2 hours to complete in real life. In Skyrim time however it feels like 5 minutes. This game couldwill cost me my marriage if it keeps going like this.

I'm at about 110 hours. I've made my character a bit OP, though. I didn't use the fortify restoration exploit, just alchemy / enchanting -> smithing. Anyway, it's undoubtedly an awesome game and I quiver to think of the next generation version.

What gets me is how freaking enormous and filled with stuff the world is, and how much detail has gone into creating npc's that react to how you and the world changes. I never really got into Morrowwind, played it for a few hours and dropped it, and never bought Oblivion, but this edition blows my mind. Also - I'm glad I don't smoke, what a nasty combo that would be.

And in other news, I went outside today, into the sun!!

So far I am less addicted to Skyrim than I was to Oblivion and I think there's primarily two reasons.

First is that I know what sort of thing to expect in Skyrim as the style of TES games doesn't really change. I know what's going to happen when I stumble upon a daedric shrine, now, so the "Holy shit! What the hell is this?" experience from Oblivion is gone.

Second is that I tended to play Oblivion in the winter when everything was gray and dreary outside and I wanted some color in my life. Skyrim doesn't satisfy this because it looks way too much like outside does right now. Who knows, though, maybe come August when it's sweltering hot outside I'll fire up Skyrim and take in the pleasant chilling effect.

People who think Skyrim is the best RPG made havent played through the Baldurs Gate series where things you do in the game actually matter and effect the way the main quest line plays out.

Good concept, poor execution. Here's how I would have done it:

1 - Shock - Detail WTF!!!!
2 - Denial - I get other things done, I took a poop yesterday, so it's all good.
3 - Anger - Why are you sending level gazillion bloody hagraven at me so early FFFFUUUUUU
4 - Bargaining - Just gonna finish this quest and stash the loot at home before bed... oh, I have to sell off all the other stuff first too so I don't forget... oh and I'll just discover the next quest loca-DRAGON! oh, I can just stash this loot at home before bed...
5 - Guilt - Sorry that I seem more interested in my game than you babe, but in my Skyrimmed brain, you're just like another NPC to me. That's a bad thing to say, right? Whatever.
6 - Depression - <same dialogue, but with complete emotional detachment -- both true depression and RPGs induce such states>
7 - Acceptance - I AM this game, and there's nobody left to get in our way now, is there, my precious?
