I've made a GIF banner, but does anyone know how to put it into HTML?
using the img src tag, as well as an around the edges, you should take a look at basic html.
I know basic HTML goddamit. I have done that, and i know the file path, but it just aint working. Heres what i've done:
<IMG SRC="WHAT DO I PUT IN HERE" BORDER="0" WIDTH="468" HEIGHT="60" ALT="Come to my page!">
yeah, your image file needs to be online, it won't work from your computer.
Aye, i kinda sussed that, but how do i put it online?
You seem a little teste, darksun. You alright? Ya' okay?
There are lots of ways to put an image online, but the basic necessity is web space. If you have a web site or something like a flickr account, you can upload the image there then reference it from anywhere else on the web.
Do you have any such place to which you can upload files?
Well judging by the fact that darksun has a functioning avatar image, I'm guessing Flickr is a definite option, eh?
Whoa! Don't go jumping to conclusions, my friend (hey, that would make a really fun board game--a mat on the floor with conclusions you can jump to!).
Before today my avatar was a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal that I found on flickr because I didn't create an account until I decided I really wanted to use the avatar you see now.
So, should we be actively promoting VS? What about all the warnings on "sift talk" that we are growing too fast?
I don't have a very popular website, but IF I DID, these would be relevant questions!
Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
Well, ockhamist - we're kind of in a tough spot. We're in that in-between zone that I think a lot web sites get to.
We're growing a bit too fast for our infrastructure and development needs, but we're not growing quickly enough to get an economy of scale that would support the site financially for growth.
I think if one of us was better at the finance/business/marketing side of things we would do better, but we're all a bunch of geeks and hate "punch the monkey" ads as much as everyone else.
It's also possible that I'm a little too precious about the site, not wanting to sully it with evil, evil advertising. ;-) That being said, we may be about to bite the bullet with a bit of advertising.
dag, well active users make up what percentage of pageviews? So, will ads hurt VS pageviews if put on non-logged in page. Also, will active members bitch or be willing to tolerate some banner ads?
Maybe even they will do a few clicks through a week to keep this lights on. Try putting a 280 pixel by 160 pixel ad in the right column for awhile.
I tried uploading it to flickr, but it stayed set on one part of the animation.

It still won't work.
adblock FTW, i guess ...
you could just use the archaic version of the same.
{a href="http://www.videosift.com/> <img src="http://flickrimageurl.jpg"> (obviously replacing the {}'s with gators)
fyi phoenix, instead of using curly and hoping people can replace, just let them copy & paste by using a < for < and > for > it won't get turned into a hot link.
ahhh, sweet. thank you. i got so used to bbcode and was hoping for a [code] tag that i didn't even think of using the replacement.
still dosnt work. ah well, ill just give up.
