UNIQUE VIEWS
My favorite is "unique views."
Put your cursor over the number of "views" and "unique views" pops up.
My understanding is that this is the number of registered Sifters who have viewed the vid. Doesn't count lurkers, doesn't count multiple visits.
Gives a better idea of how your vid is doing.
5 votes with 150 views is terrible.
5 votes with 7 unique views is great.
TURN TOP 15 INTO TOP 30
Here's another....
You can make the Top 15 Videos be up to the Top 30 Videos.
Then you can see which videos are creeping up to the Top 15 and hence Power Point Worthy.
Under Preferences, click on Listings. There are a bunch of different changes you can make -- Choosing how many Top Videos to show up on the sidebar is just one of them.
{edit} PREFERENCES: Put your cursor over your name on any page. A list of drops down. "Pref" is preferences.
I like using the advanced search, which is really feature rich, to browse a user's highest and lowest voted comments to get a sense of them. It can feel a bit like stalking. If you're an incredible narcissist like me you'll spend an hour or two about once a month looking through your own comments, eventually forget what you're reading and find yourself thinking, "Yes! Finally, someone who knows what they're talking about!"
Also, trying to find channel combinations that only match one video, like islam + jazz.
*quality post idea.
Awarding bareboards2 with one star point for this contribution to VideoSift - declared quality by geo321.
Preferences? Where the fuck are 'preferences'?

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
Pretty basic, but hovering over comment vote buttons to see who voted up/down - I know some people don't know about this. Also, hovering over "2 weeks ago" eg. for the submit date gives the actual calendar date/time.
There used to be visual cues for a lot of these things.
The relative date and the view count used to have a dotted underline which is the standard visual cue for "more info on hover". See the right side of this page for an example. Comment timestamps could benefit from this treatment, too, as could comment voting controls.
Your username in the menubar used to have a downward pointing triangle (like the downvote button) next to it instead of your star/gem/crown to indicate that it's a drop-down menu.
@dag, any input as to why these things were removed over the years?

I'm honestly not sure - might have been minor design changes on our side - but could also be browser changes, the way alt or title tags are cued. It's all going to change in VideoSift 5.0 - which I'm starting to get pretty excited about. >> ^xxovercastxx:

nesting html tags for the lolz
This makes more sense when you can see what was actually written.
I have always wondered how to do the smaller font.... Thanks, bertie!
[edit] DANG. You still can't read what he typed. Bert, you are hysterical. And small.

Hit quote.
You will see all the "code" he typed to create those effects.

Confession: I honestly don't know how to type emoticons. I know (: and and that's it. I am jealous of those who can do the tongue thing.
Sorry to be OT!

Interesting, I see a ratio of votes to total views when I hover the mouse over the views, it doesn't mention number of unique views at all.
Good post btw
Ah. It doesn't work on Sift Talk posts. Just videos.

This website has a huge list of emoticons. I don't know which ones work on the Sift but it's pretty interesting to browse.

Here's one I've seen several people have to ask about (myself included).
After you promote, or quality, a video you can edit the comment to say whatever you would like.
That one actually confused me for quite a long time but I eventually figured it out. Isn't all of this basically what the wiki was originally intended for? >> ^Boise_Lib:

Pretty much, but that was derailed by paranoia and lack of leadership.

Figured it out - unique views are displayed for sifted videos, ratio of votes to views is displayed for unsifted videos - makes sense now
You can profile reply a comment to a different member than the submitter of the comment. Click the "profile reply" link then edit the address in your browser's address bar to replace the commenter's username with that of the member to whom you're forwarding.
This isn't so much as a trick but more of a question as to why a certain feature goes away.
If you're a member and are logged in you can "Search" for videos but if you're not logged in the search box in the top right corner disappears. This is frustrating because sometimes I want to show people a cool video on VS but don't really want to log in due to various reasons (such as but not limited to: Not wanting an entire auditorium to know my VS name, time constants, on a public computer where I don't want to type my passwords, my name is so awesome people's heads might explode). Being able to search without logging in would be fantastic. Unfortunately, I stopped coming to VS to show people videos because of this and end up just searching Youtube. This of course limits the amount of exposure this site gets. Every now and then I show a video to more than a hundred people. That's a lot of potential future members which can lead to a better community, more exposure through word of mouth and internet talk, and even donations.
If this has been asked before and answered, I apologize and may the Flying Spaghetti Monster have mercy on my soul.
Oh and...
Yay! I popped my SiftTalk posting cherry

This is probably blocked in order to prevent attacks on the site via bots.
If you want to search a video on videosift, use google and type in:
site:videosift.com tricks of the sift
which will lead you to this page.

Yeah, I know. It's just much easier to not have to back out of the page and go to Google with every new search.
Thanks for a response
@Unsung_Hero - @dag made that change a while back because... I'm drawing a blank now. What was the reason for that?

I think we were seeing weird things in non-logged in searches, and it was sometimes causing performance issues. Security and performance I think. MetaFilter does the same thing.>> ^lucky760:
