Do Not Misuse Your Instaban Privilege

As many of you know, Ruby members have the ability to insta-ban any non-starred members. We originally added this feature as an immediate measure that could be used to protect against spammers or other malicious users who are in gross violation of Sift guidelines.

This power absolutely may not be used against members for posting a single comment that is clearly not over the line. Case in point, @rottenseed decided to instaban @CelebrateApathy apparently for saying something off-the-cuff, which may have been mildly fiery but not at all overboard.

This individual comment cannot validly be considered a gross violation of Sift guidelines. The only time instaban should even be considered in direct response to commenting is if someone is overtly, repeatedly going well over the line attacking other members. Even then, a Sift Talk discussion should be enough to sort it out, or if you don't want that publicity, just message @dag or myself and we'll investigate.

Instabanning for no good reason may be considered an abuse itself, earning the instabanner a temporary (or permanent) ban of their own, so please use it sparingly and only when the alleged offense is truly and obviously in absolute violation of the Sift guidelines.

Thank you for not smoking.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

One thing that I'm learning is that it's often very difficult to get the full intention of a comment. I've been guilty of misjudging ironic off the cuff remarks. Unless it's really heinous, I'm going to try contacting the person first before jumping to action. This I vow.

Now before I piss off into the wind...let me suggest you adjust the comment guidelines because it CLEARLY states that one must avoid personal attacks. To me, that was a personal attack. So I executed a *.ban file on his ass (which I thought would go to sift talk).

Maybe I'm rusty...maybe things have changed too much since the last time I remember giving a shit...

The FAQ clearly states to avoid personal attacks, yes. However, it also says we love a good, fiery comment thread as well as "If a comment is bad enough it will probably be deleted due to negative feedback." Stating that one should "avoid personal attacks" is not the same as stating "if you ever call anyone a name ever in any context you'll be banned."

Referring to someone as a "dumb ass" as part of a meaningful argument (whether right or wrong) is not the same as just commenting repeatedly or back and forth name-calling and insults. Everyone's allowed to get a little hot under the collar during a passionate argument. It's just "extreme" personal attacks that should be questioned and possibly dealt with.

also, as posted in the other talk post:

As second-class citizens P's enjoy less protections under the law and thus fewer of the privileges. Losing ones P, climbing the ranks etc. gives a citizen of siftopia the freedom of being more abusive with the language, not only because people will recognize jokes for jokes more easily, and also shows that the citizen is invested in the community. The concrete instaban was too harsh and quick, but it was done because the person banned evidently looked to be a non-contributing member of the community. On further inspection this was a rash decision by the accused. It shall be undone (has already been).

There are two lessons one must take from this.
1) if you have a P and/or you haven't been here, don't attack anyone personally in a direct and confrontational manner
2) instaban is only to be used if something is especially egregious, or if it's something that's not worth the administrators' time. Spammers in particular are the target of these.
