ZP takes stab at the new Cry project.

Zinnngg, that was one of the better reviews from him yet, even though I have never tried Farcry2 and dont plan to, definetly not after this

Farcry 2 got boring quick.

I liked Yahtzee's point about open ended games; I've always prefered more linear games with better pacing like Bioshock and COD4.

Also, Farcry 2 is not a Cry project; that would be Crysis.

Quboidsays...

I liked the mods vs rockers reference. Yeah his accent was a bad attempt at the South African accent that is all over the game. It's fine for Brits like me but I guess if you're not used to fluent Brit, trying to understand someone with a British accent butchering a South African accent is just too many weird sounds going on at once, especially as he drops in and out of the South African accent all over the place. Anyway, I'm off to watch Blood Diamond on Blu-ray - I'm sure it's pretty much like Far Cry 2, right? )

(Actually I did like Far Cry 2, even if it was painfully repetitive at times, so Far Cry 2 + Jennifer Connelly = Win)

Once again, who is that dude who pops up in his videos? He's at 3:32 in this one. The weedy looking guy.

budzossays...

I find it odd that Yahtzee didn't mention some of the most well-known and justifiable bugaboos about this game. Mainly, how fast the enemies respawn, especially at checkpoints. You can murder a whole checkpoint, then drive 200 yards away, loop back, and the same enemies will be respawned. I'm also a bit irritated that the world, while immersive in any given moment, is such a temporal facade. Nothing you do in the world matters... you can blow a village to smithereens and it will be magically repaired the next time you drive through.

Don't get me wrong, I actually really like Far Cry 2. I'm playing through it very slowly. I couldn't care less about the story, I just like to play through one mission at a time whenever I need to let off some steam and don't feel like doing multiplayer.

I did hate it at first, but I stuck through the first couple hours and the game became a lot more fun once I learned the ins and outs and got some upgraded weapons. Now I think it's a very solid game and would recommend it to any fan of FPS, or eyeball junkies who buy games for the graphics.

EDDsays...

His South African accent sounds pretty much like Aussie English. Regional - West coast, maybe?

Also, as I already explained here, this game was complete utter shit, disappointment of the year. As far as I'm concerned he went easy on it, not mentioning the enormous amount of glitches almost everyone's experienced up to the point of not being able to play the game even after applying the official patches, the sub-par physics engine, budzos' mentioned ultra-fast respawns, terrible AI in general (way worse than Crysis sub-par AI), etc. etc.

At least he did mention repetitiveness. Regarding that, let me put this in perspective for those that haven't played FC2 yet - this game is about three times worse than Assassin's Creed on X360/PS3 was.

Argsays...

I agree with budzos entirely. I bought Far Cry 2, started a new game, played it for about 30 minutes and then never came back to it for a month. I kept thinking of it as some kind of chore that I was putting off. But when I did eventually give it a few hours I got seriously hooked.

With regard to the zebras. I once witnessed a zebra slowly amble up to the front of an empty, parked Jeep. When its nose gently brushed up against the front bumper it promptly fell down dead as if it had been shot through the head.

Especially since he's an Australian living in England trying to do a South African accent.

Wait! I thought he was an English dude living in Australia?

As a west Aussie can I just say we don't actually sound like that It's the east guys who do...

But anyway, I love Farcry 2. It might be repetitive, but it's fun. It's fun to hunt guys in the darkness, and it's fun loading up heavy explosives (or strapping them to your car) and blowing everything up. It's a game that lets you wander around and make your own fun, doing missions however you feel at the time.

Paybacksays...

The worst thing about the game was the absolutely ridiculous amount of diamonds you got from the briefcases, there's like what, 30 diamonds to find? After the first 10 diamond case, I never found more than 1 or 2 at a time.

I guess that was the idea - crazy-ass inconsistent accent-game => same in review.

You know what he meant!

I tried it for a few hours. Thank god I didnt pay money for it (came with my graphics card). Its so repetitive, its not funny anymore. In the first 30 mins I had high hopes but after the first few missions and me noticing the stupid respawns and jeeps full of bad guys hunting me down from miles away, driving in my back all the time or chasing me in my car over miles without me noticing it at all until I get out of the car and promptly getting run over by them, I left off and uninstalled it.

I dont like the GTA series (except 1), because they are so fucking boring and repetitive, so why should I like this game? Its even worse.

9364says...

I had a lot of fun with Far Cry 2. Yes it's immaculately repetitive, but for a shooter it's just strait up a blast. If you don't mind doing the same missions just in different places but love a good shooter with very solid combat and the best health system ever, you'll like Far Cry 2.

Running over zebra's is just a bonus.

if you like like linear, go watch a movie. I have a brain of my own, and like to develop my own story in the world that a game provides me.

It has nothing to do with enjoying linear storytelling. The developers have more control over the pacing in linear games, letting them craft deeper, richer, more immersive and exciting experiences. I would love to play an open ended game with the same quality, but unfortunately, open-ended games spread resources too thin and ends up diluting the whole experience.

Developing your own story in Farcry 2 is all well and good, but it gets boring and repetitive, and ironically, becomes quite mindless.
