From the Associated press two days ago. Add it to the pile of "Why I hate religion."

I know this is probably my imagination, but the more I look at that vid-cap, the more it looks as if the frame captures the instant after she pulled the trigger and the bullet is on the verge of entering his skull.

"Take your son, your only son yes, Isaac, whom you love so much and go to the land of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will point out to you." (Genesis 22:1-18)

What was that again about 2nd Amendment?

It's the one that gives me the right to protect myself from people who think their god(s) want them to kill me.

And the christians are saying, "It's the one that allows us to stand up in the name of our Lord."

This is the real insanity, right here in quote form.

/despair at humanity.

Just because many aspects of religion and some religious people are crazy, it doesn't mean that we can't learn anything good from religion. The Bible may, in some parts, tell us to stone homosexuals and do despicable acts, but in others it tells us not to steal or commit murder, and to love our brother man. There will always be crazies, influenced by whatever- their neighbor's dog, the bible- but the point is, because some (such as this woman) do despicable acts, we cannot judge everyone else on their case. To be entirely truthful, it shows that they do not really listen to their own religion, the principle tenets of which are love and the value of life.

I don't steal or commit murder, but it sure as hell isn't because the bible told me that I shouldn't do those things.

Religion is an artifact of the past... one of the few major ideas telling people that they should ignore testable evidence and instead trust in anecdotes. Superstition is harmful to the intellectual health of a society, and the world will be a better place once it is gone.

So what exactly do you plan to do about it? As you have evidenced, people whose minds are already made are reluctant to change them.

All you've managed to do is create a little more hate in the universe, and that, I think we can all agree, is something we can do without.

^ Requiring evidence to believe in something is not a "reluctance to change". I left Christianity behind in my childhood along with Santa Claus and fear of black cats. Why? Because I no longer believe things simply because people tell me to.

I'm more than happy to let people live in their own little imaginary world on their own time, but I take offense to it when they start trying to pass laws or infringe upon the rights of others based on what their imaginary friends told them.

Anything that teaches people that they should actively resist testing their own beliefs is destructive in my opinion.

Religions will be the same in a hundred years, because they by definition can't change, but human genius will have accomplished an enormous amount with technology during that time.

The case for invisible supernaturalism will be weakened by orders of magnitude once reprogenetics, neural engineering, and regenerative medicine are beyond the baby steps they're taking now.

...Or maybe technological progress will suddenly stop tomorrow and there will be nothing left for science to figure out?

It's a nice thought anyway.

I don't see medical science impacting religion's popularity. It's social technology that will steal religion's thunder, because religion was one of a few ways to integrate into a community before, and it's becoming increasingly obsolete. People that enter into a religion because of its logical foundations are an extreme minority, unless you're talking about philosophical religions like Buddhism and Taoism.
